At New Delhi, September 15. India won by six wickets, covering a target of 279 runs in 40.5 overs with 9.1 overs to spare. A 15,000 crowd was kept on its toes by the brilliant strokeplay of Dias, who scored 102 for Sri Lanka, and Srikkanth, who missed his century for India by 5 runs. Excelling in front-foot strokes, Dias faced 114 balls and hit eight 4s. With Wettimuny he added 170 runs for the second wicket. Dias offered return catches to Doshi and Yashpal at 44 and 63 but these could detract from the high merit of his knock. Srikkanth's scoring-rate of 95 runs off 66 balls (one 6 and thirteen 4s) had a shattering effect on Sri Lanka's bowlers. With Vengsarkar he added 134 runs for the second wicket.
