World Series Cup

†AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN 1983-84

At Sydney, January 25 (day/night). Australia won by 87 runs. For the first time in the series, Australia used Smith, the young New South Welshman who had hit a century in the second of the one-day finals, a year previously, against New Zealand in Melbourne, as opening batsman. He revelled in the responsibility, scoring 106 from 129 balls and sharing an important stand with Ritchie, who had been moved from opener to his customary position at No. 3. The running out of Mudassar after only three deliveries of Pakistan's innings, followed by Mohsin's dismissal by Lawson, left the tourists staggering at 1 for two, whereupon Imran, with little assistance, made a painstaking 41 in 131 minutes. Australia, however, recorded the most comfortable of wins.

Man of the Match: S. B. Smith. Attendance: 26,106.
