First One-day International

†WEST INDIES v NEW ZEALAND 1984-85

At St. John's, Antigua, March 20. West Indies won by 23 runs. West Indies overcame an uncertain start on a lively pitch as Richards, with a 6 and seven 4s off 85 balls, and Haynes added 127 for the third wicket. But the most telling innings was Harper's unbeaten 45 at the end from 29 balls with three 6s and three 4s. New Zealand never appeared likely to present a challenge, although the Crowe brothers batted well in adding 91 before Harper dismissed them both in successive overs. The ground was packed for the Antiguan Richards's first match as West Indies' official captain.

Man of the Match: R. A. Harper.
