At Melbourne, January 6. West Indies won by seven wickets. Australia lost a wicket to the first ball of the match and were 68 for two after twenty overs, but Border and Boon, both missed in the 30s, led their revival by adding 115 from 127 balls. Haynes's unbeaten 123 from 131 balls, with fifteen 4s, and his stands of 71 with Richardson and 94 in fourteen overs with Richards swept West Indies to a comfortable victory.

Man of the Match: D. L. Haynes. Attendance: 58,929.
