First One-day International

†INDIA v PAKISTAN 1986-87

At Indore, January 27. Pakistan won by three wickets. India, put into bat, were dealt early blows by Imran but recovered thanks to Shastri, captaining India for the first time as Kapil Dev had damaged a thigh muscle. Shastri's 50 off 67 balls began a counter-attack which saw India add 39 from the last three overs. Pakistan were in some difficulty against the Indian spinners, but Abdul Qadir, who was dropped at a crucial juncture, hit a brisk 39 off 46 balls. Imran and Manzoor saw them through with an over to spare. Run-making was always easier against the Indian seamers and the home side missed not having a third spinner.

Man of the Match: Abdul Qadir.
