World Series Cup

At Brisbane, January 18. Australia won by 11 runs. A deceptively easy victory was set up by Jones, who shared a second-wicket stand of 178 in 30 overs with Marsh while making his third successive hundred against England. He faced 101 balls, hitting two sixes and six fours. For 40 overs England were never far behind the asking-rate. But when Gatting missed a swing at Taylor in the 43rd, Athey, drained by two days in the heat, was unable to take over the initiative. Up to that point he was an admirable anchor-man. His 111 lasted until the 48th over, used up more than half the strike (152 balls, ten fours) and put too much pressure on his partners.

Man of the Match: D. M. Jones. Attendance: 21,060.
