AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN

At Sydney, February 13 (day/night). Pakistan won by five wickets. Toss: Pakistan. With 25 inches of rain having fallen in Sydney over the previous twelve days, it was a credit to the curator, Peter Leroy, and his staff that the match was played at all. In the circumstances, Pakistan's decision to ask Australia to bat was a wise one, for only four strokes reached the boundary in their 50 overs. Jones, with 54 from 89 balls, reached his 24th half-century in limited-overs internationals in possibly the worst batting conditions of his career. Nor did umpiring errors improve matters: overs were miscounted and Miandad was adjudged lbw when batting well in front of his crease. Next day the newspapers were unanimous in describing the match as the farce on grass. Pakistan owed their victory to Imran (106 balls) and Akram (30 balls).

Man of the Match: Imran Khan.

Attendance: 29,810.
