AUSTRALIA v SRI LANKA

At Adelaide, February 18. Australia won by seven wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka. Ranatunga's decision to bat first was not supported by his top-order batsmen, who fell to unnecessary strokes against a jaded Australian attack. Aravinda de Silva struck 39 from 29 balls, including three sixes and three fours, but it needed an eighth-wicket partnership of 44 between Jayasuriya and Ratnayake to give the total any substance. Jones opened the innings for Australia and was unbeaten at the end with 80, made in 149 minutes from 120 deliveries with five fours.

Man of the Match: D. M. Jones.

Attendance: 16,827.
