At Mohali, May 9 (day/night). New Zealand won by 22 runs. Toss: Pakistan.
Invited to bat, Astle and Young shared an opening stand of 155, punishing Pakistan's depleted attack on a splendid pitch. New Zealand were 234 for one in the 41st over. But after Astle was stumped, for his fourth century in one-day internationals, they lost momentum against the tight bowling of Saqlain Mushtaq. Pakistan needed 286 and Shahid Afridi gave them a chance, racing to 59 from 46 balls. New Zealand's slow bowlers put the brakes on, however, backed up by some fine catches inside the fielding circle. Astle completed an excellent game by taking four wickets, including key batsmen Ijaz Ahmed and Salim Malik.
Man of the Match: N. J. Astle.
