Third One-Day International

New Zealand v Australia 1997-1998

At Napier, February 12 (day/night). New Zealand won by seven wickets. Toss: Australia.

Cairns took five for 42, his best return in one-day internationals, to extinguish a promising Australian innings and set up a big home win. At 209 for four, with almost eight overs remaining, the tourists were well set - until a devastating spell from Cairns brought him four wickets in eight balls and reduced them to 215 for eight. Outclassed until now, New Zealand displayed new resolve by weathering an early-innings wobble to win handsomely. Fleming himself led the charge with an unbeaten 111 and shared successive century stands with Astle and McMillan.

Man of the Match: S. P. Fleming.
