It was 16 years to the day since Zimbabwe sensationally beat Australia in the 1983 World Cup and, at 153 for one after 28 overs, they seemed on course for another upset. But five wickets fell for 47, and Zimbabwe preferred to consolidate their net run-rate rather than go flat out for victory. Johnson, who took four boundaries off Warne's second over, and added 114 with Goodwin, finished on 132 not out from 144 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes; he was on the field throughout.

Australia's innings was built around a stand of 129 for the third wicket by the Waugh twins, after Steve replaced Lehmann, who retired hurt when Olonga struck his finger. Mark became the first player to score four World Cup hundreds (Ramiz Raja and Viv Richards both made three) - and also came close to decapitating his brother, with a straight drive off Strang which caught him flush on the helmet. Steve summoned a new grille immediately and went on to make a powerful 62 from 61 deliveries, with two sixes. This was Zimbabwe's first official one-day international at Lord's - they had beaten Holland here in the 1986 ICC Trophy final.
