An astonishing century from Ijaz Ahmed enabled Pakistan to secure the series with 23 overs to spare. Promoted to open under the Lahore floodlights, Ijaz hit an unbeaten 139 from only 84 balls, winning the match with his ninth six - on top of ten fours. His opening partner, Shahid Afridi, struck 47 in 23 balls as they put on 80 in eight overs. Mohanty was hit especially hard, going for 24 in one over. India had struggled when asked to bat, and had to be rescued from 77 for five by Jadeja, who scored 76 in a comparatively stately 109 balls, and there was a late run-a-ball flourish from Chauhan. But 217 in 49 overs (Pakistan were deprived of one for a slow over-rate) proved quite indefensible against what Tendulkar called one of the greatest one-day innings.
