†AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND 1987-88

At Perth, January 3 (day/night). New Zealand won by 1 run. What was to prove the most exciting match of the series saw Australia suffer their only defeat of the season. New Zealand's gamble of batting first paid off when Jones scored a well-compiled 87 from 107 balls. His second-wicket stand of 106 with Martin Crowe came in 78 minutes off 117 balls. Australia's Jones (92 from 91 balls) was their stalwart as all except Boon fell cheaply. When Jones was ninth out, Australia needed 12 runs for victory from ten balls, but with just 2 runs required Whitney lofted the fourth ball of the final over to wide mid-off.

Man of the Match: A. H. Jones. Attendance: 24,200.
