At Hobart, January 12, Sri Lanka won by four wickets. In the first major match played at Bellerive Oval, the new headquarters of the Tasmanian Cricket Association, Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand with some ease to record their first one-day international victory since beating India at Kanpur in December 1986. So ended a run of fourteen consecutive losses. Put in, New Zealand lost five wickets for 70 before Blain and Hadlee (52 from 68 balls) saved the innings with 95 in 77 minutes. Mahanama and Aravinda de Silva were the architects of Sri Lanka's victory, both scoring half-centuries in front of a very supportive crowd. Australian and New Zealand records, which include the match between the two countries at Sydney in March 1983 for the Bushfire Appeal Fund, showed this to be Hadlee's 100th one-day international. Unhappily, it was marked by the start of the crowd abuse towards him which became worse as the series progressed.
