Sri Lanka gained revenge for their mauling by India at Taunton in the World Cup three months earlier. Then, Ganguly and Dravid scored 328 between them; this time, they totalled 31. Tendulkar was one of four men run out, having survived one run-out attempt earlier and also being dropped on his way to 37. Only Jadeja came close to 50 as India declined sharply from 155 for three. In reply, Jayasuriya hurried to 61 in 62 balls, with eight fours, out of a first-wicket stand of 83. His new opening partner, Atapattu, anchored the innings and was still there when Sri Lanka achieved their target in the 47th over.
