First One-Day International

Australia v South Africa 2000

Toss: South Africa.

Put in, Australia were at a crossroads when 37 for three in the 12th over. Bevan (106 balls) and Steve Waugh (103 balls) steered them on the road to victory with centuries and a stand worth 222 in 212 balls, an Australian fourth-wicket record in one-day internationals. When Shane Lee took 17 off Pollock, including two successive sixes over cover, South Africa needed something special. Instead, they batted as tepidly as they had bowled: wickets fell regularly and the asking-rate stretched beyond their reach. Fiercely determined to live up to the occasion, they had played with uncharacteristic inertia.

Man of the Match: S. R. Waugh. Attendance: 25,785.
