England v West Indies 2000

At Lord's, July 9. No result. Toss: West Indies.

On a dank morning, England made another miserable stab at run-making against an inexperienced attack. Stewart was taken at slip, Hick at the wicket - and England were caught unawares by the lateral movement generated by McLean and Collymore. Flintoff's troublesome back kept him out, though Trescothick, his former England Under-19 team-mate, provided more evidence of a sound temperament. He remained calm as his more senior partners came and went until, on 49, he gave a soft return catch to an off-break from Gayle. Thorpe, back in international cricket after taking the winter off, made 42 before miscuing Rose; no one else contributed more than 17. Torrential rain intervened in the 44th over with England a shoddy 158 for eight.

Attendance: 25,374; receipts £768,888.
