At Cape Town, November 4. South Africa won by three wickets. Toss: South Africa. International debut: S. Abrahams.
Newlands' short straight boundaries brought out the best from big hitters Cairns (four sixes, seven fours) and Klusener (four sixes, two fours). And it was those two fours by Klusener off O'Connor, when South Africa needed seven from two balls, that consigned the Black Caps to a virtual whitewash. Cairns's partnership of 150 in 23 overs with Twose could have been the basis for a winning total had New Zealand's later batsmen not let South Africa back in the game. O'Connor reclaimed lost ground with three wickets in his first four overs, but Rhodes and Boucher rebuilt the home reply with a century stand at five an over. When three wickets fell in six overs, newcomer Shafiek Abrahams sensibly left the heroics to Klusener, whose 59 not out came from 42 balls.
Man of the Match: L. Klusener. Man of the Series: N. Boje.
