Although Sri Lanka's old World Cup opening partnership, Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana, ran up 110, and Atapattu contributed an unbeaten 51, Sri Lanka's final total was not nearly enough. The openers' usual blazing style was tempered as they felt their way towards respectability, and the later batsmen could not accelerate; Pollock conceded just 33 in ten overs. As in the Cape Town Test, Gibbs lasted only two balls. But Dippenaar, restored to the one-day side for the injured Kirsten, avoided further alarms, and Kallis switched between attack and defence with such apparent randomness that he seemed to be toying with the bowlers. His greatest problem was keeping up with the running of Rhodes. Kallis thumped the penultimate ball of the 49th over, his 139th, to the cover boundary to win the match and complete his sixth one-day international century.
