At Gros Islet, St Lucia, June 9. West Indies won by seven wickets. Toss: New Zealand.
West Indies took an unbeatable 2-0 lead with a much more comfortable victory. They had ten overs in hand and, to the delight of a capacity crowd of 14,000, Lara batted as freely as he did all season to finish on 59 not out. New Zealand had established a solid base of 69 for one in 16 overs. Then three wickets in 18 balls from Collymore's steady medium-pace and Gayle's off-spin forced Vincent and Harris to take greater care in rebuilding: their partnership of 90 required 23 overs. West Indies, chasing a target of 211, were never pressed, and New Zealand suffered their eighth defeat in eight completed one-day internationals.
Man of the Match: B. C. Lara.
