Pakistan v New Zealand, 2009-10

At Abu Dhabi, November 3, 2009 (day/night). Pakistan won by 138 runs. Toss: Pakistan.

Pakistan recovered from a terrible start - losing Salman Butt in the first over and Younis Khan in the third, both to Bond before a run had been scored - to reach a total that proved far beyond New Zealand's powers, despite a good pitch. Khalid Latif dropped anchor for 112 balls, but the impetus was provided by Shahid Afridi, who cracked 70 from 50 deliveries, with three sixes. Kamran Akmal took up the cudgels, hitting four sixes of his own in a 43-ball onslaught as Pakistan, 81 for four at halfway, piled on 206 runs from their second 25 overs: Bond, whose first five-over spell brought him two for 11, went for 50 in his last five as the floodgates opened. After a decent start New Zealand stumbled, losing three wickets in 17 balls, and, although Redmond hung around for 91 deliveries, only Vettori of the others resisted for long. Afridi, at the centre of gossip about his supposed captaincy ambitions, did his cause no harm with two wickets in successive balls with his skiddy leg- spin, missing a hat-trick when an impassioned lbw appeal against Butler was denied.

Man of the Match: Shahid Afridi.
