Australia v Sri Lanka, 2012-13

Geoffrey Dean

At Melbourne, January 28, 2013 (floodlit). Sri Lanka won by two runs (D/L). Toss: Australia.

Another rain-interrupted contest ended in a narrow Sri Lankan victory, soothing their initial irritation when the match resumed in conditions similar to those in which the Sydney one-dayer had been abandoned. Jayawardene and Tissara Perera took heavy toll of Laughlin at the death after the bowlers had seemed in control for much of the innings. The rain meant Australia's target was revised to 122 from 15 overs, but they always looked slightly off the pace. Finally, after striking his first two balls to the boundary, the aggressive Maxwell swung at the last delivery of the match - and found only thin air. The game concluded in acrimony as Maxwell, Warner and Wade clashed with Tissara Perera and Jayawardene, the trouble flaring after the batsmen told the Sri Lankans to get a move on during a long discussion about fielding positions before the final ball. The unsavoury scenes - dismissed by both captains as "heat of the moment stuff" - were reminiscent of some of the Big Bash League's excesses.

Man of the Match: N.L.T.C. Perera.
