England v West Indies, 2012

Gideon Brooks

At The Oval, June 19. England won by eight wickets. Toss: England

The death of Surrey cricketer Tom Maynard the previous morning cast a pall over his home ground. A minute's silence was held before the start, black armbands were worn by both teams, and flags flown at half-mast; Cook later admitted the sombre mood had affected some of his players, and England won with five overs in hand, clinching the series with a game to spare. Gayle briefly shone on his return to the West Indies side after a 14-month dispute with his board, crashing five sixes in 11 balls, including three in an over from Bresnan, one landing on the roof of the Bedser Stand. His dismissal, however - leg-before to Swann, despite Gayle's belief the ball had struck his bat first - robbed West Indies of momentum. Simmons was run out for a stodgy 12 from 50 deliveries, and it needed Dwayne Bravo's energetic 77 to give them a defendable total. But Cook and Bell began with 122 in 21 overs, and Cook cantered through to his fifth hundred in the format. It was the sixth successive one-day international in which an England opener had scored a century.

Man of the Match: A. N. Cook. Attendance: 17,110.
