3rd ODI, Abu Dhabi

Pakistan v Australia, 2014-15

At Abu Dhabi, October 12, 2014 (day/night). Australia won by one run. Toss: Australia.
If Pakistan's implosion in the second one-dayer was spectacular, this one was off the charts. Needing 28 with 33 balls and four wickets in hand, they stumbled, then recovered - and entered the last over requiring two runs with two wickets left. Somehow Maxwell's off-spin conjured up a double-wicket maiden. Pakistan deserved more, especially as Sohail Tanvir and Shahid Afridi had done well to contain Australia after they had been 102 for one in the 22nd over; Warner and Smith were threatening something far more substantial than the eventual 231. Hughes, in what turned out to be his last international match, was one of Tanvir's three victims. Even before the game there had been controversy and intrigue. Afridi captained in place of Misbah-ul-Haq, who had opted to rest himself after a lean run of scores. It was an unprecedented move for Pakistan, and sparked speculation that Afridi would resume on a permanent basis, something the board eventually denied.
Man of the Match: G. J. Maxwell. Man of the Series: S. P. D. Smith.
