Profile

Alan Ormrod was a right-hand opening batsman who played for Worcestershire for two decades before finishing off his career with Lancashire. He made his debut for Worcestershire in 1962 and almost immediately was an ever-present, despite a small hiccup in 1964. He was part of their back-to-back Championship-winning side in 1964 and 1965. He really found his feet in 1966 when he passed 1000 runs for the first of 12 times and as a result was selected for an MCC Under-25 tour of Pakistan. It was the closest he came to international recognition. He won a third Championship title with Worcestershire in 1974 - again that coincided with a downturn in his personal form - and in 1984 he surprisingly moved to Old Trafford at a time he had been expected to retire. He enjoyed one good summer with Lancashire, finally winning a one-day trophy at Lord's at the fourth try. Never more than an occasional offspinner, 17 of his 25 career wickets came in 1972 including 5 for 27 against Gloucestershire. He retired at the end of 1985 and moved into coaching with Lancashire and Nottinghamshire.
