The departing Stuart MacGill has been fined an undisclosed amount by Australia's leadership group for arriving at the ground after play had begun on the second day of the drawn Test in Antigua. An embarrassed MacGill, who announced his retirement the following day, said he slept through his alarm, "missed the bus and was late for work".

A team spokesman said the group met during the Test and imposed a "financial sanction" on MacGill for his tardiness. The in-house hearing involved Ricky Ponting, the vice-captain Michael Clarke, coach Tim Nielsen, manager Steve Bernard and MacGill.

MacGill knew in Australia's first innings he could no longer trouble the opposition's top-order batsmen and decided his 44th Test would be his last. It was not a match to remember for MacGill, who returned figures of 1 for 182 and finished with 208 Test wickets.

On the second day he walked into the ground late with Viv Richards, who said the legspinner looked "sheepish". "I had been out for dinner the night before," MacGill said of the incident. "It was actually a pretty early night for me.

"I can't guarantee you I slept particularly well - I've got a lot on my mind - but I can't even use that as a reason. I was sleeping, missed the bus and was late for work. It would be cooler if I had a better story."

MacGill was not the only person who was punished for their actions during the second Test. The West Indies players were docked 5% of their fee by Roshan Mahanama, the match referee, for a slow over-rate while the amount was doubled for the captain Ramnaresh Sarwan.
