Hello there. Welcome to West Indies v Australia.

Toss Australia have chosen to bat.

Can't wait for the start. There has been criticism of the West Indies players not being focussed enough for this series and players have rubbished such thoughts. Sample this from Chanderpaul : ""ICL (Indian Cricket League) offered us a whole heap of money and we put that aside and we went to Zimbabwe and South Africa (in December to February) and played... I'm talking about millions of dollars and we put that aside just because we want to play west Indies cricket ... IPL is a legal league and it allows us to do both, so why shouldn't we take that opportunity...? We didn't do anything wrong; we did what was asked. We got permission from the board (WICB) and they asked us to come back at a certain time and we all came back before the time."

But let's not dwell on such serious themes. So to lighten up, through this Test match, I will list 50 great mavericks who played this game. Lifted straight out of Wisden Cricketer March issue.

Let's start with George Gunn, listed at 44 in the list. David Frith writes: "An earlier Derek Randall, Gunn was unpredictable and volatile. He gave his wicket when lunch was delayed because "I always have my lunch at 1o'clock"; he advanced to West Indies quicks, blocking bouncers in front of his face and blowing the bowler a raspberry. It is said, too, that he missed an England tour because he put the invitation unopened into his pocker and did not rediscover it till next spring." What a legend!

I am Sriram Veera and will bring you all the action from the Test. Srinivas Raju will be doing the scoring. Thanks for logging on.

Pitch: Half of the wicket is bare and the other half has patches of grass. So Jimmy Adams reckons there will be inconsistent bounce. Hmm ...

Ponting: The wicket looks good for batting early in the game. There are quiet a few changes. It's pretty unusual for Australia. Katich and Hodge get an opportunity.

Sarwan: We would have bowled anyway. The captaincy doesn't affect me. We just need to concentrate on working as a team like we did in South Africa and against Sri Lanka. Gayle is a big loss but it presents opportunity for the others.

The West Indies players get in a huddle before running to their fielding positions. Simon Katich and Phil Jacques walk out to open.

0.1

Powell to Jaques, no run, Classic start to the Test match. In the corridor and the batsman shoulders arms. All is well with the world. No biff over fine leg for a six. Good to see some Test match cricket.

0.2

Powell to Jaques, no run, Further away from the stumps and Jaques lets that one go through to the 'keeper as well

0.3

Powell to Jaques, no run, this one zones in on the off stump, Jacques crouches, gets his bat in front of the pad, defends down the track.

0.4

Powell to Jaques, no run, Three slips in place and they watch as Ramdin gathers a short of length delivery outside off stump. Good carry there. Parchement is standing at short leg. The rules of Test cricket say throw the new guy there

0.5

Powell to Jaques, no run, slips down the leg side. Good bounce - just above waist-high and Ramdin gathers it almost chest-high

0.6

Powell to Jaques, no run, short of length, lands on the middle and off, moves towards off and Jacques pushes it out to covers

End of over 1 (maiden) Australia 0/0

    • PA Jaques 0 (6b)
    • SM Katich 0 (0b)
    • DBL Powell 1-1-0-0

Fidel Edwards to bowl. Short leg, three slips and gully in place

1.1

Edwards to Katich, no run, Edged but it fell just short of the 'keeper Ramdin. It was slung across, full in length and outside off, Katich was rooted to the crease, lunged out at it, reaching for it and got a thin edge. Ramdin dived forward but couldn't reach it in time. Just fell short.

1.2

Edwards to Katich, FOUR, Full pitched outside off stump and Katich drives through mid-off past Sarwan. Easy pickings there. Nice little half volley.

1.3

Edwards to Katich, no run, full in length, outside off stump, squeezed to cover point where Chanders makes the stop

1.4

Edwards to Katich, no run, again full, again outside off stump and pushed down to mid-off

1.5

Edwards to Katich, 4 leg byes, on a length, lands on leg and middle, swings down leg, Katich misses to connect with his glance but it runs off the thigh pad to the fine leg boundary

Katich wants the sightscreen to be moved to right.

1.6

Edwards to Katich, no run, He takes the leg stump guard and shuffles across to the off stump, opens the bat-face and guides to point. Quite a big shuffle there.

End of over 2 (8 runs) Australia 8/0

    • SM Katich 4 (6b 1x4)
    • PA Jaques 0 (6b)
    • FH Edwards 1-0-4-0
    • DBL Powell 1-1-0-0
2.1

Powell to Jaques, no run, digs this one short and slants across and Jacques sways away from it

2.2

Powell to Jaques, no run, searing yorker, on the base of the middle, Jacques, unlike Katich doesn't shuffle and takes out the front leg in time and brings the bat down in time. It would be a good ball to bowl to Katich.

2.3

Powell to Jaques, 1 run, tip and run. He leans across, pushes a length delivery to the off side and off they go for a single. Typical Australian way.

2.4

Powell to Katich, no run, down the leg side

2.5

Powell to Katich, FOUR, full pitched on the legs, Katich flicks it to backward square leg boundary.

2.6

    • DBL Powell 2-1-5-0

3.1

Edwards to Jaques, no run, bouncer, chest-high, on the middle and Jaques plays it very well. He hops, gets on top of the bounce and keeps it down. He has a open stance and stands pretty erect with the bat raised a touch.

3.2

Edwards to Jaques, 1 run, moves in but towards the pads and Jaques turns it to long leg for a single

3.3

Edwards to Katich, FOUR, Jaques has been quiet but Katich has been putting away the loose ones. Short in length and width outside off, Katich gets on top of it nicely and square drives past point

3.4

Edwards to Katich, OUT, Gone this time! The first wicket of the series goes to Fidel Edwards. He hurled that one full and outside off, it moved away a touch, Katich, on the shuffle, chased it, reaching out well away from the body and went for a square drive. Fatal. It flew off the outside edge to backward point.

A silly mid-on in place for Ricky Ponting.

Powell to Jaques, 1 leg bye, on the pads, turned to the leg side

4.3

Powell to Ponting, no run, good probing delivery. It landed on a length, outside off and shaped away a touch. Ponting covered his off stump and raised his bat high to let the ball fly past him

4.4

Powell to Ponting, 3 runs, Elegant cover drive. He leaned across, to the pitch of a full delivery outside off stump and creamed it through extra cover. Very nice shot, that.

4.5

Powell to Jaques, no run, outside off stump and Jaques lets that one go past him

4.6

Powell to Jaques, no run, again bit too much outside off to interest the batsman

End of over 5 (8 runs) Australia 26/1

5.4

Edwards to Ponting, no run, closer to the off stump and Ponting lunges across, as his wont, and shoulders arms.

Edwards to Ponting, FOUR, super shot that. It was short in length and outside off and Ponting goes back to force it past point. Not the horizontal shot but a punch off the vertical bat.

5.6

Edwards to Ponting, FOUR, slightly slower, full pitched and Ponting stretches across to cream it through the covers.

It landed on a length, on the leg stump and moved towards middle, Jaques was caught in the crease, tried to jab it to the leg side, bat was outside the line, though and made no contact. Hawk eye says it would have hit the top of the middle stump

His batting and fielding belonged on the village green but he became a master at bowling without a run up. He once contrived to complete and over while the Worchester Cathedral clock was striking 12. Jaggernauth to Hussey, no run, outside off, left alone

47.4

Jaggernauth to Hussey, no run, fuller and straighter, from round the stumps, Hussey stays where he and brings his bat in front of the pad to defend. He should have got on to the front foot to that but adjusted in the end

47.5

Jaggernauth to Hussey, 2 runs, paddles it to fine leg

47.6

Jaggernauth to Hussey, no run, almost bowled! It was really full and Hussey was late in getting his bat down in time, tried to jab it away, misses and it somehow, somehow missed the off stump. Even Hussey looks a tad surprised that he has survived. Agony for Jaggie.

Powell to Ponting, FOUR, slipping on the legs and Ponting deflects it fine. Nicely tickled away

Rowan from Aus: "To Asim, nice of you to say it is an Australian quality:) but Michael Hussey is just a good guy, seems no emotional problems or confidence problems with him, he is at one with the bat."

Aneesh: "From the looks of it WI are going to get steamrolled. Australia has 4 or 5 guys averaging above 50 while, West Indies have none. Ponting is looking in superb form, and Hussey is gonna score runs looking good or bad. And there is no comparison in the bowling, with Australia having arguably the best pace attack. With that said I still hope something miraculous gives the Windies the win."

Mustafa Fayyaz: "It just shows the quality of a batsman, Hussey has switched perfectly, he is being over cautious, but it means he is trying to get into the test match mode slowly, as the series progress, you will see Hussey lift his rate up. Ponting looks much more comfortable in test cricket, he has not worked out T20 yet."

48.2

Powell to Ponting, no run, leans forward to drive a full delivery on the off stump to mid-off

48.3

Powell to Ponting, 1 run, bangs this one short and Ponting pulls it down from front of his face to long leg,

Powell to Hussey, no run, short of length, angling across Hussey who pushes it to covers

48.5

Powell to Hussey, FOUR, short one, on the leg and middle and Hussey helps him to another boundary, this time with a pull shot. Bad over this from Powell. Yet to find the right line and length

48.6

Powell to Hussey, no run, slanted across Hussey who has shown impeccable judgement all day. Again lets this one go past him.

49.4

Jaggernauth to Hussey, no run, Even as Jaggie delivers the ball, the slip fielder Bravo moves to leg slip position, thinking Hussey would paddle but he defends to the off side. Jaggie has a big smile on his face

49.5

Jaggernauth to Hussey, no run, defended to the off side again, this time Bravo doesn't move anywhere.

49.6

Jaggernauth to Hussey, OUT, Jaggie gets his first Test wicket! Bravo takes a sharp catch but again he was moving just after the bowler released. This time he moved to his left and Hussey jabbed at a flighted delivery that turned a little. It flew off the outside edge and Bravo stopped his movement and dived to his right to take a very sharp catch. Jaggernauth must be feeling a lot better now. A lovely little moment for him. First Test wicket.
