Bangladesh won by 95 runs
9,10,11,12,13 July 2009 (5-day match)
  • Overs 1-50
  • Overs 51-100

12.57 pm Finally some good news, play is about to start here. Experts believe there is some moisture in the pitch. Few cracks around as well , the bounce may get unpredictable later on.

It's going to be Tino Best to start proceedings, Tamim Iqbal on strike.

West Indies XI - Omar Phillips, Dale Richards, Floyd Reifer (capt), Travis Dowlin, David Bernard, Chadwick Walton (wk), Darren Sammy, Nikita Miller, Tino Best, Ryan Austin, Kemar Roach.

12.22 pm We had bright sunshine five minutes ago but the dark clouds moved back in and the covers followed. Right now it is drizzling... going to be that sort of a day I guess.

Toss Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has won the toss and elected to bat first.

12.05pm A little bird tells me that the toss is set to take place at 12.10. Lunch was taken at 11.30.

11.47am The rain has eased a bit but the situation is getting complicated with the outfield getting soggy and the square taking in water which is being dumped from the covers. Start before lunch is impossible now and we will wait and see how much damage has been done. That's it for now - we will keep you posted as things move along.

10.53am Between now and the last update, for a brief period of time, it looked as if the rain will subside but the heavens seem to have opened up even more now and it is pelting down at the moment. Looks like we are in for a long delay.

10.22am Back to square one, few large ominous looking dark clouds have moved in and there is a slight drizzle in the air, the covers are back in place.

10.15aml News just trickles in that the toss will take place at 10.30 and they are looking at a 11 O'clock start.

10.10am The covers are being removed now and the sun is out, the Bangladesh players are out there in the middle going through their warm-up routine.

West Indies 'unknowns' are slowly starting to come out.

10.00am Now for some good news, it has stopped raining and the umpires are out there in the middle talking to the groundsman. The covers are still on though.

9.51am Sorry to say that the news is not that good, It is raining at the moment and the start will be delayed

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the 1st Test between Bangladesh and well, all most West Indies.

The reason why I say so is, as you would have probably heard by now, the top West Indian players have decided to boycott this Test due to a contact row with their board. The West Indies board in turn has announced a second-string squad for the first Test... more

Sriram Veera was asked to preview the Test and he came up with two sweet words Advantage Bangladesh

Duran has this for us from T and T: "I am a diehard West Indian supporter. I have supported the West Indies since I was 14 years old, mainly because of the heroics of batting legend Brian Lara.

Even amidst over a decade of non inspirational cricket baring the heroics of Brian, Shiv and Chris on specific occasions, I must say that today, with the announcement of a second string WI team, heralds the lowest of lows for WI cricket. These events that have transpired, solely as a result of the WICB's complacency represents a blatant disrespect for the millions of WI supporters.

Time and again the WI board has demonstrated ineptitude of gigantic proportions with respect to the revival of WI cricket, mostly noted in certain of their selection decisions. By fielding a second string team this ineptitude has now been magnified to the extent that the WI people are now abandoning their cricket heritage as they now find more pain than joy in what was once a West Indian legacy. Well done WICB."

12.6

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, presents the full face and drives it firmly back past the bowler, just wide of mid-off, for a single

13.6

Bernard to Tamim Iqbal, no run, straying down leg, misses an attempted glance down to fine leg

2.55 pm - Resumption time - The players are back. Tea has been taken. Conditions are still overcast.

You can follow what's happened between the board and the players, reading these bits. Here's the WIPA stand on the issue. How did this whole problem originate? Find an explanation here. We've also put together a timeline of events related to this standoff. Check it out.

DK, another guy writing in from Canada: "Replacement players are playing based on a risk/reward assesment. Most people would play a few test matches for free if given the chance. Some might even pay to play a couple of matches. However, when you are chosen because of ability and it becomes your job then you need some additional rewards. It's normal human behaviour and nobody can fault either the regular squad or the replacements. The fault is with the incompetent board."

Here's Gary, another Windies fan, writing in from Canada: "I just came back from St lucia yesterday morning. I was disappointed with the weather after the last game washed out on Sunday. However, I was terribly shocked when I heard that the West indies team was a no-show for the T20 opening functions. I saw Sarwan and Shiv boarding flight to Miami on Tuesday and suspected that the WIPA had boycott the today's test match. Like the millions of West indies Suppporters, I have also now abondon the WI team. WIPA should first demand that their representative performed at a competetive level before demanding pay hikes and central contracts especially for the amatuers we have in the WI team."

2.25 pm local time: The covers are still on, and the delay continues It's still raining, not heavy, but a pretty steady drizzle. The day had been shortened to 70 overs, and we might be in for some further modifications to the number of overs. It's been a terrible day.

Sundar's response to Duran: "RE : Duran - Point well made. But then the players need to be questioned as well. With the kind of performances they have put up over the last few years, I wonder they have the face to ask for pay hikes and central contracts. The amount of time and energy they have spent in the last few years squabbling with the board over pay, if they had spent half of it improving their game, WI would have been in a better position. And they would have had a better moral right to ask for these things."

March writes in from Guyana: "It is painful to continue to watch blunder after blunder from the WICB, while at the same time WI cricket is hurting. I think the time has come for either WICB to get it right or get out of managing WI cricket. A loyal cricket fan."

An interesting comment from Navin about the current state of affairs, a rather harsh one at that - "But seriously - why should they get a contract? Pride is what used to drive WI; now it is money. When was the last time they won anything. The bottom line is we need and want winners not people who point fingers for their lack of success. Maybe it is a good thing the WI regulars went on strike because now we have a WI team that have something to prove. These WI underdogs may win while the regular WI team is guranteed to lose."

Trolly mails us from Texas - "this is great to expose the young and up coming cricketers to a taste of international game ..bangladesh is not one of the superior test teams , and this is a great chance to see the young W.I shine..question is ..if those whom did well in this test will they get a call to the senior team."

Sharthak from Bangladesh has this to say: "Knowing my team for a whole lifetime, I would like to suggest that no matter how set my batsmen are, a rush of blood is always on the cards. But i would ofcourse like to see a big score posted in the first innings!"

Hemwant has an interesting theory: "During the last T20 WI vs India I warned that the WI vs Bangladesh matches will be affected by rain. I am appalled at the fixing of matches during the rainy season. The players on strike cannot be faulted for their action at this time for I guess they also anticipated the rain and thus use the occasion to send their message clearly to the powers of WICB."

Bad news. Apologies for jinxing it - I had just said "back to normal" a few minutes back, but the weather's taken a turn for the worse in the last couple of minutes. It's a steady drizzle, and the covers are coming on now.

It's a beautiful sight, the mountain in the background covered in mist, but such natural beauty often makes for terrible conditions for playing cricket.

Paul Reece: "I really must say that I am at a lost as to the current state of West Indies Cricket and the impasses allowed to develop which will serve to do nothing but hinder West Indies Cricket.

WIPA and the WICB seem intent on proving to the world that business must come before pleasure. That the boardroom squabbles and "differences" super cede the responsibility both parties "owe" to the West Indian public. Perhaps "owe" is a strong word, but the public demands and expects that the board and players show some competence as it relates to West Indies cricket on a whole.

The record of the WI team in the last 24months has been less than stellar as well as decisions and actions of the board being even less encouraging. It is painfully obvious that WI cricket is lacking the vision, opportunity and execution required in today's ever competitive market and it is a shame that these supposed professionals, do nothing but "play the game" often ignoring "the sport".

I for one never understood why people assume because you were a great/good cricketer that you would automatically be a good administrator. It doesnt work that way as most effectively seen through the WICB.

Thanks for the time and lets hope West Indies cricket changes for the better, before we have to keep resetting what we deem as "the worse".

Jordan: "Those who are complaining that the WI players are in the wrong in the matter of boycotting are being hugely unreasonable. They must keep in mind that while yes this is a sport, it is their job and for the most part the players do not have a fallback. they have dedicated their lives to representing the west Indies. They must also ask themselves if they truly believe that players in England or Australia are playing without contracts. When Sir Frank Worrell boycotted the series against England in !947 to get increased wages he did not have this reception. In fact he was praised. The WI players of today aren't even asking for higher wages, they are asking to be paid for playing over the last few months. Furthermore, what example is this sending to the youths who have the idea of playing for the West Indies in their head? This is a turn off. Cricket on the whole has been losing interest even more for WI cricket which has been lacking success and consistency over the past few years. The only way to to revive WI cricket is through development and the actions of the WICB are a hindrance rather than assistance."

Before we sign off, a comment, like a lot we've had today, about the current crisis affecting West Indies cricket.

4.15pm - Play has been called off for the day. This is bad news. Sorry about it, do join us tomorrow for the continuation of this game and hopefully we'll get some more play than we did today. Play will start half-an-hour early.

4.08 pm It's still raining in St. Vincent, and there are a few puddles on the field. Play is virtually impossible now, and all we need is an official word on it. Poor stuff.

3.41pm The delay continues. The covers are still on, and there's still some rain in the air. In fact, it's coming down really hard. Chances of any play are pretty bleak.

Another interruption. A poor day, this. Tony Cozier on commentary says: "This delay looks like it's going to be a lengthy one." Ominous signs. Another delay, we'll get you an update the moment we have one. It's raining pretty heavily now.

18.5

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, back of a length on middle, defended off the back foot to the bowler and in come the covers

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the second day's play.

9.02 am - Play will start half an hour early, in about 28 minutes, to make up for the time lost yesterday.

The weather looks good at the moment but it is much darker than it was 30 minutes ago - so fingers crossed.

9.24 am - Sun is back in full force and we are on for a prompt start. There is one ball left in Sammy's over. Tamim Iqbal on strike.
