England in West Indies ODI Series - 4th ODI

West Indies v England

England won by 9 wickets (with 9 balls remaining) (D/L method)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the fourth ODI being played in Barbados. England were mauled in the third ODI by eight wickets, and had it not been for Dyson's stroke of genius in the first game, the series was dead for them. West Indies, despite their thumping win, don't have everything going their way. They'll try their best to focus on winning this rubber and keep their minds off the dispute with their cricket board - Chris Gayle has warned of a possible boycott of the final ODI if the issue of player contracts is not resolved in quick time.

Before taking the plunge, if they choose to that is, they'll want to win this fair and square and leave the drama for later. There's still a while before the toss, so read Andrew Miller's preview to the game in the meantime.

The news from Bridgetown is that England have won the toss and opted to bowl. Steve Harmison is playing, and we'll let you know shortly as to who's been left out. Poor Gareth Batty will be carrying the drinks. West Indies have an unchanged team, no surprises there.

Mark Kidger: "Does Steve Harmison dance the Hokey-Cokey? Recently he's been in when he was expected to be out and out when he should have been in. There seems to be little logic to bringing him in for Gareth Batty now, but dropping him in the previous match on a fast pitch after a good performance! Speechless, in Madrid!"

It's a sunny morning in Barbados, and there's a sizable crowd at the Kensington Oval. There's a bit of moisture on the pitch, so that explains the reason for Harmison's selection and the decision to bowl.

The England team, big smiles, is strolling out. Strauss seems the exception though, wears a worried look. Simmons and Gayle are making their way to the middle, welcomed with huge cheers from this lively crowd. Anderson will begin the proceedings for the visitors. Two slips in place. All set!

0.1

Anderson to Gayle, no run, loosener outside off, Gayle doesn't bother chasing that

0.2

Anderson to Gayle, no run, nippy, gets a bit of zip off the patch, lands short of a good length outside off, surprises Gayle with the bounce as he tries to prod off the back foot, is beaten

0.3

Anderson to Gayle, no run, decent start, caught playing forward this time, in the channel outside off and going away with the angle, a bit of movement away from the bat as Gayle tries to defend off the front foot

0.4

Anderson to Gayle, no run, three in a row, a lazy lunge forward and is beaten by the away movement, Anderson will be encouraged by this

0.5

Anderson to Gayle, no run, on the stumps, good length on middle and leg, defended to short cover, sarcastic cheers from the crowd

0.6

Anderson to Gayle, no run, back of a length on middle, defended with an angled bat towards point, much more confident this time but Anderson has begun well

Sally: "So, Batty is one of the better performers in the last, abysmal, ODI, and he's left out? Right, that makes perfect sense. Or not. It wasn't the bowling that let us down, it was the batting"

Simmons on strike now

1.1

Broad to Simmons, no run, probing line outside off, he lets it go, bowled at a decent pace there, not a loosener like Anderson's last over

1.2

Broad to Simmons, no run, on target rightaway, back of a length on the off stump, defended solidly to cover

1.3

Broad to Simmons, no run, fuller but in that channel outside off, Simmons is taking no risks early on, leaves it alone

1.4

Broad to Simmons, no run, shuffles to work it away behind square but gets rapped high on the pads, would have gone well above the stumps

1.5

Broad to Simmons, no run, good stuff from Broad, slightly short outside off, gets a good carry through to the keeper

1.6

Broad to Simmons, 1 run, first runs for Phil's nephew, good length outside off, held its line there, guided down to third man for a single

2.1

Anderson to Simmons, no run, defended awkwardly there, short of a length outside off, dabs it back uppishly towards the bowler with a comical jump

2.2

Anderson to Simmons, no run, beaten, none of those acrobatics this time, landed on a good length outside off and spat away as he tried to defend off the back foot

2.3

Anderson to Simmons, 2 runs, too straight and Simmons makes good use, turning it away between midwicket and mid-on for a couple

2.4

Anderson to Simmons, no run, pretends to withdraw his bat, but he's actually beaten, in that channel outside off stump and is almost done in by the swing once again

2.5

Anderson to Simmons, no run, a touch too short and wide, guided comfortably to point, still a little tentative there, a settled batsman would have given it a good thumping

2.6

Anderson to Simmons, no run, short of a good length on the off stump, pushed to cover off the back foot, and Andy completes another good over

3.1

Broad to Gayle, no run, back of a length on the off stump, blocked towards cover

3.2

Broad to Gayle, SIX, that's disappeared, Gayle's opened up, poor ball though, long hop on the off stump and he picks the length early, rocking back and pulling it away over the deep-midwicket boundary

3.3

Broad to Gayle, no run, appeal for lbw, full and swinging in towards leg stump, Gayle's missed the attempted flick and is rapped right in front of the stumps, the umpire though shakes his head, poor call really, would have gone straight on, Broad unlucky. Steve Davis is the umpire

3.4

Broad to Gayle, no run, good length on the off stump, defended off the front foot to cover

3.5

Broad to Gayle, no run, tries to pull but mistimes it to midwicket, similar ball to the one that went into the stands but Gayle fails to cash in this time

3.6

Broad to Gayle, FOUR, not this time though, full on the off stump and he hits through the line past the bowler and mid-off for a boundary, eventful over that

4.1

Anderson to Simmons, FOUR, moves well outside off to a ball that's bowled on middle, gets behind it and turns it away wide of square leg, beautifully timed, raced away to the fence

4.2

Anderson to Simmons, no run, short of a good length on the off stump, the comical jumping defense again, but struck a little more firmly to cover

4.3

Anderson to Simmons, no run, in the corridor , gets across and blocks it in front of cover

4.4

Anderson to Simmons, no run, held it back, short of a length on the off stump, defended off the back foot to the bowler

4.5

Anderson to Simmons, SIX, massive six, just a fraction short outside off, he latches onto it in a flash, heaving it over the deep-midwicket boundary, about ten rows into the crowd

4.6

Anderson to Simmons, no run, much better from Anderson, testing line outside off stump but Simmons restrains himself this time, shoulders arms to that one

Broad is out of the attack and Flintoff replaces him. By the way, it's Siddhartha Talya on the commentary today

5.1

Flintoff to Gayle, SIX, typical of Gayle, greets him with a six, a meaty length ball outside off and that's got to go, hits across the line but connects it superbly, sails into the crowd for his second six, the West Indies are away

5.2

Flintoff to Gayle, no run, good length outside off stump, leaves it alone though you never know with this guy, would have swatted that as if it were a fly when in full flow

5.3

Flintoff to Gayle, no run, shapes himself for a monstrous cut through point but fails to reach it, a touch too wide

5.4

Flintoff to Gayle, no run, slightly short of a good length outside off, left alone again, it's three he's not got his bat to

5.5

Flintoff to Gayle, no run, leaves it be once more, better stuff from Flintoff, in that tempting zone outside the off stump but Gayle's taking no risks there

5.6

Flintoff to Gayle, no run, and again, good comeback after that horrific start, left alone to the keeper

Here's an interesting tidbit. West Indies have hit 18 sixes in this series, and England have only managed one!

6.1

Anderson to Simmons, 2 runs, fullish outside off, walks across again but covers it well, flicks it behind square for a couple

6.2

Anderson to Simmons, no run, confidently driven to mid-off, slightly overpitched outside off stump

6.3

Anderson to Simmons, no run, and again, teasing length that but Simmons deals with it well, getting forward to the pitch and driving through the line to mid-off

6.4

Anderson to Simmons, 1 run, short of a good length on the off stump, runs it down elegantly to third man for a single

6.5

Anderson to Gayle, no run, good length on the off stump, defended watchfully towards cover off the back foot

6.6

Anderson to Gayle, FOUR, poor line there, bowled short on the leg stump and Gayle tickles it to the fine-leg boundary, sad end to what was otherwise a decent over

7.4

Flintoff to Simmons, no run, on target, good length on the off stump and gets some decent bounce, punched off the back foot to cover

7.5

Flintoff to Simmons, no run, quicker and short on the off stump, goes for the pull through midwicket, gets an inside edge onto his shoe and it drops dead on the pitch

7.6

Flintoff to Simmons, 1 run, well played, full outside off, gets to the pitch and pushes it firmly wide of mid-off for a single

Raghu: "Time to change the mentality from defensive to aggressive, traditional to innovative ! Obviously for England !"

Harmy into the attack now, what can he do?

8.1

Harmison to Simmons, no run, starts with a slower one pitched short outside off, Simmons was too early into an attempted nudge behind square, misses

8.2

Harmison to Simmons, no run, short of a length again, bowled at normal pace, shoulders arms to that one

8.3

Harmison to Simmons, 1 run, needs to get fuller, easily done that, run down to third man to give Gayle the strike

8.4

Harmison to Gayle, FOUR, he's a little generous on Harmy as compared to Flintoff, he's fed with a half-volley outside off, military medium really, driven stylishly wide of Anderson at mid-off for a boundary

8.5

Harmison to Gayle, 1 run, identical shot but not timed as well, gets a single for his efforts, Anderson slides and saves a couple

8.6

Harmison to Simmons, no run, better, much closer to the off stump and bowled on a good length, defended to cover, not the best over he's bowled

9.1

Flintoff to Gayle, SIX, slashes hard at a wide one from Flintoff, gets a thick outside edge and it flies away over third man, no chance for Harmison there, who wasn't at the edge as he should have been, but it would have cleared him anyway

9.2

Flintoff to Gayle, no run, almost chopped it on, tries to defend that lethargically off the back foot, gets an inside edge onto his back pad

9.3

Flintoff to Gayle, no run, too close to cut but he goes through with the shot anyway, chops it down to point

9.4

Flintoff to Gayle, no run, fullish outside off and moving away a hint, left alone to the keeper

10.3

Harmison to Gayle, 1 run, pushed gently wide of cover for a quick single

The rain's got heavier. Tony Cozier thinks it's because of an upper-level trough somewhere. Kindly explain what he means. But the news is that the covers have come on, and the players have retreated to the dressing room. The umbrellas are out, and it doesn't look too good out there in the middle.

Ambrish: "The paddle sweep - isn't that more like a scoop to the fine leg area? Wasn't this the same shot that was used to good effect by Mohammad Ashraful at the last world cup? Or am I confusing two different shots?"

It was indeed used by Ashraful, but he's not the guy who invented it. Doesn't play the shot too well, Ashraful. He's played it off his very first ball on many occasions, got out, and looked silly!

Karthik will clear all the technical doubts, he's an ace batsman - "The shot that Marillier invented (and used to great effect in a match against India) was the paddle scoop which is mostly played against fast bowlers. The ball is lifted in the air over the short fine leg fielder (Misbah, T20WC final). The paddle sweep is different. It is mostly played against spinners and medium pace bowlers, to run the ball along the ground in the fine leg area. I remember Sachin Tendulkar playing it even before 2000." Thanks for making it much clearer, mate.

As for the rain, it's still there, and we'll get you the updates.

Parrot Lord a.k.a Totaram is a meteorological genius: "It means a low pressure system of wind building up something like a hurricane but not as fast the hurricane but something like a mild storm."

Tony Cozier on the TV commentary says we could have a half-an-hour delay. Nothing's confirmed, so please stay put. It's still raining in Barbados, so we are in for some delay.

Here's the wikipedia link to the Marillier shot, very generously provided to us by Shyam. But they're wrong about the "reversing the grip" bit

The rain has eased in Barbados, says our UK Editor Andrew Miller.

We haven't had any news from Barbados as yet, so tune in to the Twenty20 international between South Africa and Australia being played at Centurion. Sout Africa won the first - a thriller - by four wickets.

16.20 GMT: Some good news. The covers are coming off and play is scheduled to start in ten minutes time, at 16.30 GMT.

As for the paddle question, a lot of you appear to have the paddle scoop confused with the paddle sweep. The paddle sweep had been used much earlier, while the scoop, pioneered by Dougie Marillier, was an audacious stroke where the fast bowler was at the receiving end of the shot, with the batsman bending really low and playing the ball over his shoulder, generally to clear the short-fine fielder, or beat fine leg.

The weather seems well and good in Barbados and we are minutes away from the resumption. Meanwhile, Jacqueline from Trinidad and Tobago has outdone Parrot Ram in terms of expertise in the weather department: "It's a depression, an area of low pressure. Depressions can grow into tropical storms, and thence to hurricanes. They come over the Atlantic from the Africa region, hang around for 3 days and cause constant rain. There's little wind and it's not in any way a storm. It's just rain. They come across in the Hurricane season - you can see them in the satellite photos lining up across the Atlantic. Very cool."

Dheeraj: "Irrespective of whether the Indies win this match or not, this series has really been a pleasure to follow. It is more than an understatement that a team with such a dominant history had been wretched for a long time. It is therefore a pleasure to see them ready to grind it out and not collapse. Hopefully, we will see them resurface as serious contenders for the top spot in 2-3 years."

Flintoff is off the field, don't know why. A series of injuries here. Nikita Miller, too, is trudging off with his physio. Appears to be a side strain he sustained when he was caught off that no-ball. Fidel Edwards comes in.

West Indies have posted a competitive score here. They got off to a flier, but suffered a wobble midway through their innings, England had them struggling at 145 for 6, but Bravo showed some spunk to guide his team to a testing total. It's a must-win game for the visitors to stay in the series, and they'll be determined to go into the final game with the series level. Join us in a bit for the England run-chase.
