England in West Indies ODI Series - 5th ODI

West Indies v England

England won by 26 runs

We are all set for the start of play, and Fidel Edwards is charging in towards Andrew Strauss

1.25pm Five minutes until the start, and it promises to be a helter-skelter finale to the series. If England do win, incidentally, they will have won their first-ever ODI series in the Caribbean, without actually winning a single match over 50 overs! It would be a fittingly bizarre finish to a strange winter, but I wouldn't bet against Chris Gayle having something to say about that.

1.20pm It's a cracking atmosphere at Beausejour where the local fans have hung around despite the rain. The pitch is a bit cracked and promises to be rather lower and slower than the quick deck they encountered at Bridgetown. No spinner for England might, therefore, be a mistake. But it all remains to be seen.

1.15pm West Indies have made two changes, one of them enforced after Nikita Miller's back strain. Suliemann Benn returns as the senior spinner, while Ravi Rampaul, a 20-over specialist, is back in the side in place of Lionel Baker.

West Indies 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin, 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Suliemann Benn, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Fidel Edwards.

England are unchanged, after some debate about Harmison's position. He is retained from the side that won in Barbados.

England 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Ravi Bopara, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Owais Shah, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Andrew Flintoff, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Dimitri Mascarenhas, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steve Harmison.

1.10pm West Indies have won the toss and will bowl. Chris Gayle sounds as though he would have preferred to lose it, but he's taken a punt on getting early movement.

1.05pm The toss could conceivably be imminent ...watch this space. The start is expected at 1.30pm, and at this stage it could be 29 overs a side. So there we go. And here is the toss.

12.45pm So, the wait goes on, and so does the wait for team news. And Steve Harmison's winter has been reduced to a microcosm in the last few hours. Overnight it was believed, according to Nasser Hussain, that he was out of the side in favour of Gareth Batty, at 33-overs-a-side, he was back in instead of Batty, and now with a Twenty20 match looming, he's probably out on his ear again. In, out, in, out, spray it all about.

12.35pm Oh dear, we've got yet another delay. The umpires aren't happy with the outfield, so the toss has been postponed to 1pm. The players have been out there warming up in bright sunshine, but Clancy Mack, the fourth official, says there are still concerns. Funny how they are so worried about outfields now, having allowed the Antigua Test to begin on a sand-dune. But whatever.

11.20am We have a match in prospect! The toss will be at 12.30pm, the start at 1pm, and it will be 33 overs a side. So there we go. A little bit more of a delay while we wait for the outfield to dry, but we're getting there.

11.10am The umpires have taken a look, but there's still no news of a start-time, which basically means there are a few issues still to be sorted. Bear with us.

10.45am Right, here's the deal. There is an inspection due in 15 minutes' time, and then, if that goes to plan, we will get underway at 12pm local time. Which is nice. Not sure what that would do to the overs yet, but we'll find out as and when. The toss would take place at 11.30am.

10.40am The sun is shining and there are some players warming up. It's looking promising, but no word about start times yet alas.

10.05am Some good news at last. The sun is shining and the covers are coming off. Still a long way to go until the ground is fit to play, but it's a start ...

9.45am The umpires were scheduled to take a look at the conditions at 10am, but it is still raining so that's probably a bit pointless. Sit tight ...

9.20am The prognosis is not good, I am afraid. The rain is beginning to settle in, and it's all a bit dank and rubbish. I wouldn't hold out much hope of an imminent start, but if you're gagging for some action, why not cross to Durban, where Australia are batting first against South Africa.

9am Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the fifth and final ODI between England and West Indies in St Lucia. Few would have believed it at the midpoint of the series, but there is all to play for today. England have hauled themselves level at 2-2 thanks to a masterful innings from their captain Andrew Strauss in Barbados last week. A victory today would atone for some, though not all, of their myriad failings of the winter.

West Indies, meanwhile, have been on top (for the most part) on the field but distracted off it. A threat of strike action was only lifted yesterday afternoon, but a full-strength side will be selected.

I'm Andrew Miller, and I'll be taking you through the early part of the day, which alas, will be delayed by rain. It has been pouring down all night, and there's more rain squalling around the ground. It is soaking underfoot as well, so there will be a lengthy mopping-up operation to be had. We'll keep you posted as and when we hear any news.

England have done well here after the fall of Strauss. However, they haven't made full use of all the opportunities they've been given, There have been way too may short ones outside off that they've failed to dismiss. Too many for a shortened game.

19.2

Benn to Shah, OUT, a cheap dismissal, and West Indies have pulled things back well here. Full on middle and off, really slow through the air, tries to clear long-on but with little intent, was a gentle loft that, wasn't struck cleanly and Simmons, waiting in the deep just for such an error, takes it comfortably

England have lost their way. They looked good for a score in the range of 200 when Pietersen and Bopara were going strong, but they'll do well to get to 170 from here on

26.5

Sammy to Prior, 2 runs, fullish on middle and off, chipped over extra cover for a couple

Last over coming up. England will be eyeing at least 170. Sammy to bowl

28.1

Sammy to Collingwood, FOUR, full outside leg stump, shuffles and paddles it to the fine-leg boundary, would have done Dougie Marillier proud

28.2

Sammy to Collingwood, 1 run, better, a low full toss on middle, pushed wide of midwicket for a single

28.5

Sammy to Prior, FOUR, full on middle, length ball badly needed by England, gets his left foot out and smashes it between long-on and deep midwicket

28.6

Sammy to Prior, 2 runs, full on middle and leg, attempts a similar shot but mistimes it to long-on, played just wide of the fielder and they manage to get back for the second

England will be disappointed with that effort. Pietersen and Bopara had added 80 at almost a run-a-ball and laid the foundation for a sizable score but some poor shot selection, and some tight bowling in the middle overs saw England lose the plot. They salvaged 172 in the end and will be hoping the pitch plays as slowly as it did in their innings, but West Indies will back themselves to chase this. Join us in about ten minutes for the run-chase

End of over 29 (13 runs) England 172/5
MJ Prior    25* (25b 3x4)      DJG Sammy    6-0-45-0
PD Collingwood    35* (31b 2x4 1x6)      DJ Bravo    5-0-31-0
