India tour of West Indies, 2nd ODI: West Indies v India at Kingston, May 20, 2006
West Indies won by 1 run
20 May 2006 (50-over match)

Hello and a warm welcome to the second ODI match between West Indies and India being played at Jamaica. I am Sriram Veera and along with Sajan Nair, will bring you the live coverage today. It rained from the Friday evening through the night, but the morning has brought with it lovely clear skies. So we should get a prompt start today. Rahul Dravid, who hit a serene matchwinning hundred in the first game, has won the toss again and has opted to field. The team news: While West Indies have retained the same eleven, India have brought in Ramesh Powar at the expense of RP Singh. Although West Indies ran India close in the first game, India, despite the stutter at the end, had the game in their control. An interesting piece of stat-trivia for you: India have won 5 matches against West Indies in the Caribbean soil and all of them, interestingly, have come in shortened matches. Greg Chappell, India’s coach, stated that West Indies have forgotten how to win and by the look of the things, India will attempt to wrap up the series before their memory strengthens. West Indies will take heart from their performance in the first ODI – they weren’t outplayed - and will try to win this game. For that, apart from tightening their bowling, they will have to field much better. So, all set for an interesting day of cricket. Here we go.

0.1

Pathan to Gayle, no run, Swing straightaway for Pathan. Full and on the off stump line, it swung away towards the slips

The outfield has some residual dew but the pitch is dry and we should, in theory, witness a high-scoring encounter.

0.2

Pathan to Gayle, no run, similar delivery and Gayle covers his off stump and shoulders arms.

0.3

Pathan to Gayle, no run, slightly short of a length this time and again in that channel outside the off stump, Gayle pushes back and lets it go. Two slips in place

0.5

0.6

Yuvraj swoops in from the point, gathers the ball, makes a step or two forward and underarms a throw, misses and Sarwan dives back into his crease..

49.6

Agarkar to Edwards, 1 run, played away towards midwicket, just a single there- Sarwan stranded on 98 and West Indies end up with 198 on the board.

Dravid had no hesitation in electing to bowl and the new-ball bowlers were right on the money from the word go - Gayle departed early, falling to a beauty from Agarkar and when Lara fell in the 11th over the writing was on the wall, from there on it was a up-hill battle for the batsmen and under pressure they lost their way completely. Sarwan stood tall among the ruins, he was scratchy to start with and certainly had his share of luck as the Indian fielders kept on missing run-out chances one after the other, Towards the end Sarwan took on the bowlers in typical calypso fashion, the last three overs produced 32 runs but they fell short of the 200 run mark by two runs. Sarwan played beautifully, especially during the slog overs but sadly he was left stranded on 98.

We will be back soon with the run-chase, for the time being though this is Sajan Nair, along with Sriram Veera signing off - do join us after the break.
