24.1

Collymore to Sehwag, no run, That's Sehwag's 39th dot ball! defended off the front foot , back tothe bowler

This should be the last over before lunch and if Sehwag can get to his hundred before that, it will be a monumental achievement as he will become the first Indian to reach a hundred before lunch

24.2

Collymore to Sehwag, FOUR, upper-cut over slips! Short and rising outside the off stump, Sehwag first comes forward, and sees the ball climbing big on him, upper cuts it over slips!

24.4

24.5

Collymore to Jaffer, 1 run, fullish, yorker length, on the middle and leg stump and Jaffer digs it out, past square-leg but importantly that brings Sehwag on strike for the last ball before lunch!

24.6

Collymore to Sehwag, 1 run, Sehwag is almost run-out! if the throw had hit he was dead! Can't blame him for not trying to make the Indian record! or would you blame him for going for the broke ?! He went down the track, backing away towards the leg side in the process, goes for a thrash on-the-up over the bowler, doesn't connect properly and the ball rolls to mid-off, the throw comes in, just misses the sticks, Sehwag was still short!

Only four players have scored a hundred before lunch on the opening day of a Test; the hall of fame includes VT Trumper(103*), CG Macartney(112*), DG Bradman(105*) and Majid Khan(108*). Sehwag nearly became the fifth. History was calling and Sehwag made it clear that he had not gone deaf, went for a rather ambitious stroke - will be criticised by a few for that stroke - didn't connect well, went for a run and almost run himself out.

Sajan Nair buzzes me that Sehwag has just missed equalling Kapil and Azharuddin's record, they scored hundred in 74 balls! And at lunch, India are sitting pretty at 140 for 0. Sehwag galloped towards his century, and ended one run-short, almost getting himself run-out in the process. He murdered the bowlers; creaming them on the up and through the line and thus settling any queries about the green-tinged pitch. For the majority of his knock, he stood outside his crease and from there the pendulum-swing of his flashing blade simply ripped into the red cherry. 59 runs came in the off side and 40 on the leg and so one can't say he prefered either side.

The wicket had an uneven sprinkling of grass, suggesting it might make the ball zip and move but the only speed on view today was the pace at which the ball left Sehwag's bat. Wasim Jaffer was solid and patient and was untroubled out there. This is Sriram Veera, signing off for the moment. Binoy George will take up the live commentary in the second session. Please join us then.

Thanks Binoy, this is Sriram Veera, back at the helm. Sanity returned post lunch as Pedro Collins pulled things back for West Indies, striking two blows. Jaffer and Laxman flirted at deliveries outside the off stump, warming the waiting palms at slips. Sehwag, though, is still there and that would worry Lara and his men. Meanwhile at the football World Cup, Trinidad & Tobago's Soca warriors are waging a great battle with the Swedes - both teams still scoreless as the game rattles towards a thrilling finale.
