West Indies bowler Darren Sammy has said his determination to perform well at the international level stems from the fear that every game he plays may be his last.

"It's a constant reminder that this could be my last game so I have to go out and do well for myself and the region," Sammy said. "I am competing with [Dwayne] Bravo, who is one of our senior players, so it's always difficult to cement my place in the squad. It's up to me to go out there and be consistent in my performances and that's what I'm striving to do."

Sammy, 26, was at the forefront of West Indies' emphatic 141-run victory in the third ODI against Zimbabwe in Kingstown. He picked up 4 for 26 during West Indies' defence of 245 to take the Man-of-the-Match award and, more importantly, give the hosts a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

"Today the wicket had some grass on it and it was aiding seam bowling," Sammy said. "I was getting some movement off the seam and we put the ball in the right areas and we got results."

Having taken 5 for 26 against the same opponents in the lone Twenty20 international earlier, and 7 for 66 against England on his Test debut, he narrowly missed becoming the first West Indian to take five-fors in all three formats of the game at the international level. However, he said the only way he could become a fixture in the side was to improve with every performance.

"I have to keep improving so that I can be a permanent fixture in the eleven and in the West Indies squad. So far I have been doing a good job in terms of doing the job I have been asked to do. In Test cricket I have three five-wicket hauls, one in Twenty20 and I almost got one here today in a 50-over game."

Sammy would have had five wickets had captain Chris Gayle not dropped a relatively straightforward catch at slip from Graeme Cremer, having earlier taken a superb one-handed effort to dismiss Greg Lamb off Kemar Roach. However, he praised Sammy's effort which ensured the win.

"Well done Darren Sammy, he could have got five wickets and it was my fault he didn't," Gayle said. "It was definitely a team effort and I am very happy with the result. I am sure Zimbabwe will come back hard at us and we shouldn't get carried away now."

I think Sammy is an above average cricketer. He is an excellent fielder, a good bowler and has potential with the bat. However, if he want to secure a place on the West Indies side, he must begin to score a bit of runs on a consistent basis. This is where I think Bravo outshines Sammy.

Congrats on a good performance.SAMMY is very committed to the team and he is one of the few that gives a 100% out on the field for WI..however, I dont think he has a place in WI first 11 when taylor and edwards return ,reason being he isnt a wicket taking bowler(average in ODI's 43.68) nor a very economic( Econ 4.52) . YES he is accurate 'sometimes' but at his pace ' sometimes' does not cut it....I can remember too many times that he was beaten out of the attack or gave away too many runs.....I still hope he continues to do well and prove me wrong.

What more does Darren Sammy have to do to cement a place in the West Indies team. Everytime he is given a chance to play he takes it with both hands. He took 5 wickets in the 20/20 game but was dropped for the following match. I agree with Professor in that if he was a Jamaican or Trinidadian there would not be a problem. Why is Rampaul opening the bowling when he is normally the most expensive bowler on the team. Keep on doing the hard work Darren so the selecters will have no excuse to leave you out of the team only embarrass themslves when they do.

I like Sammy as a cricketer, he always tries hard and gives his best. It even more comforting that we have players fighting for a place on the side, even if its only amoung the alrounders. Bravo is a world class player and its always going to be hard for Sammy to get into the side ahead of him. However if Pollard does not pick it up then maybe he could play before Pollard. Now im a Trini and I like Ramdin as a player an keeper, but he needs to add value with bat. Most keepers around the world are good batsmen. Sadly though I dont believe there is a better gloveman in the region to replace him. I think a fighting ODI tean will be sa follows: Gayle / Adrian / Sarwan / Chanders / Deonarine / Dyayne Bravo / Pollard or Sammy / Ramdin /Taylor / Edwards / Roach / Benn or Miller. Thats 14 I will like the keep Darren Bravo around the the young Brathwath guy.

well done sammy excellent bowling, keep up the good work. its hard for sammy to play every game especially when Edwards and Taylor are fit, and although he is a very good player i would never rate him in front of bravo and neither would the selectors, but i see no reason why he can't be included in the 11 man squad even with bravo present. again well done sammy, and keep up the good work.

Sammy surely knows that it is quite difficult for cricketers from the small islands to gain a cemented place on the West Indies team. If he was a Jamaican or Trinidadian, there would have been no problem, because his bowling is consistent and steady. When he takes a few wickets, or none at all, his economy rate compensates.... yet he is treated like a loser or underperformer. Everytime he takes wickets, I am happy.... because I know that with consistent hard work, his rewards will be sure. Go Sammy!

Sammy is highly underrated as a bowler. When compared to Taylor, Edwards and Roach, he doesn't hit 150 kmph but he's more consistent than any of them. Add to that his very useful batting, he should bat higher than 8 or 9, and you have a very good cricketer in ODIs and T20s.
