West Indies tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa, 1st Test: South Africa v West Indies at Port Elizabeth, Dec 26-29, 2007
West Indies won by 128 runs
26,27,28,29 December 2007 (5-day match)
  • Overs 1-50
  • Overs 51-100
  • Overs 101-150

10.30 am local time: Aleem Dar and Russell Tiffin are the umpires for this Test. Chris Gayle and Daren Ganga will open the batting for West Indies and it will be Dale Steyn with the new ball for South Africa.

Steyn's bowling over the wicket to Gayle with three slips and a gully.

10.00 am, Toss: Graeme Smith had won the toss in his 50th Test as captain and South Africa will bowl. Chris Gayle has passed his fitness Test and will captain West Indies. He said he would have bowled first as well, given all the rain Port Elizabeth has had over the last few days.

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 AB de Villiers, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Andre Nel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Daren Ganga, 3 Runako Morton, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin, 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Fidel Edwards, 10 Daren Powell, 11Jerome Taylor.

9.30 am local time: Hello everybody and welcome to the opening day of the first Test between South Africa and West Indies in Port Elizabeth.

The two teams have had contrasting lead-ups to this match; South Africa brushed aside New Zealand 2-0 in the Tests and 2-1 in the one-dayers, while West Indies beat Zimbabwe 3-1 in an one-day series but then lost their warm-up match against South Africa A inside three days.

S Rajesh puts the task facing West Indies succinctly in his preview : "Eight losses in nine Tests in South Africa; 17 defeats in the last 20 overseas Tests; not a single Test win against a meaningful opposition outside home in more than seven years; and a humiliating ten-wicket defeat to a South Africa A team in less than three days. Going into the Boxing Day Test in Port Elizabeth, there is little to suggest that West Indies can somehow shrug off another appalling year and give their fans a year-end gift to take into 2008, especially against a buoyant South African side that is coming off a series win in Pakistan and a fearful mauling of New Zealand."

There's no confirmation yet whether Chris Gayle, who suffered a hamstring injury during the ODIs in Zimbabwe, has recovered enough to lead West Indies today. Gayle was optimistic about his chances and a decision will be taken this morning.

His counterpart Graeme Smith, on the other hand, has fully recovered from a virus that sidelined him during the one-dayers against New Zealand and will walk out to toss today.

The weather is a bit of a concern with scattered showers expected. Fingers crossed the rain stays away. It has been wet in Port Elizabeth over the last few days and so the conditions are expected to aid the fast bowlers - watch out for Dale Steyn and the West Indian trio - Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards and Daren Powell.

13.4

Ntini to Gayle, FOUR, sheer power, Gayle waits on the back foot for a full-length delivery and smashes the ball back over Nel's head

Smith's brought a silly mid-off in place to try and prevent the shot. I pity the man if Gayle hits another one like that in that region.

13.5

Ntini to Gayle, no run, defended on the front foot to the off side

13.6

Ntini to Gayle, FOUR, Gayle brings up his fifty by cutting one fiercely past the fielder at point, there are shouts of catch but that was once again hit so hard that the camera had trouble keeping up with the ball, what a start he's given the West Indies, that too after passing a fitness test this morning

The players are taking their first drinks break. They've scored 80 off the first 14 overs, shades of one-day cricket here. Most importantly, from West Indies' point of view, is that they haven't lost a wicket. Graeme Smith needs to pull out Plan B or C for the pitch hasn't had anywhere near as much juice as he would have expected after deciding to bowl.
