West Indies tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa, 2007/08 / Commentary

West Indies in South Africa T20I Series - 1st T20I

South Africa v West Indies

West Indies won by 5 wickets (with 19 balls remaining)

7.40 pm local time: The crowd have waited patiently through the rain and the dancers are warming up as the players take the field. Here's hoping that we get continuous play henceforth.

Herschelle Gibbs and Morne van Wyk are South Africa's openers. van Wyk will take strike to Daren Powell who is bowling from over the wicket with two slips in place.

Toss, 7.25 pm local time: West Indies have won the toss and they will bowl first. Remember it's a 13-overs-a-side contest so the fielding restrictions will apply for only three overs. A bowler can bowl a maximum of three overs as well.

Dwayne Bravo is leading West Indies in Chris Gayle's absence. There's a Twenty20 debutant in each side today: Gulam Bodi for South Africa and Brenton Parchment for West Indies.

7.10 pm: I have good news. Play will begin at 7.40 pm local time (30 minutes from now). It will be a 13-overs-a-side contest.

7.00 pm: The umpires - Ian Howell and Brian Jerling - have inspected the conditions and the covers are coming off.

6.40 pm: Still raining, although the intensity has lessened. The radar indicates there's more coming though. We are going to start losing overs now. One lost for every three minutes after 6.40 pm local time.

6.05 pm: The cut off for a start is 8.40 pm local time. That's for a five overs a side slog-out, so there's a fair bit to go yet.

5.55 pm: The rain keeps coming and going. The covers were almost off but the ground staff raced to get them back on again as the rain came down. It's rather heavy at the moment.

5.40 pm: There's a bit of bad weather in and around Port Elizabeth. Rain has delayed the toss.

"We respect the South Africans but we don't fear them," Chris Gayle, the West Indian captain, said on arrival. "They will be in for a fight." And so begins West Indies' tour of South Africa, with a Twenty20 international at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth. Welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the contest; I'm George Binoy, your commentator for the game.

West Indies' trip to Africa began poorly. They lost the first of five one-dayers to Zimbabwe before bouncing back strongly to win the next three (The last one was washed out). South Africa, however, will undoubtedly be more difficult to beat when the serious business of Test cricket begins on Boxing Day.

But coming back to the Twenty20 game: If you're in the vicinity of St George's Park, it'd be a great idea to get to the ground. If today is anything similar to the World Twenty20 opener, make sure you have a hard hat or two. Chris Gayle smashed the format's first, and to date only, century in Johannesburg but West Indies were upstaged by Herschelle Gibbs. His 90 helped South Africa chase down 206 with eight wickets in hand and 2.2 overs to spare.

In that match, Graeme Smith batted even though he was in tremendous pain after getting hit on the wrist by Daren Powell. However, he won't be playing in today's contest. He's been sidelined by an infection contracted during the recent tour of Pakistan. Morne van Wyk takes his spot at the top of the order and Shaun Pollock steps in as captain.

The physio's out having a look at Botha, who's bleeding from the chin. The physio's plastered his chin and is pressing a towel to the injured area.
