Wisden obituary
George Gifford, who died in September, was a member of a well-known Huntingdonshire farming family, and was a familiar figure in club cricket in the Eastern Counties between the wars. Huntingdon, Lilford, The Druids and Newmarket Tramps were some of the clubs for whom he played. He also played in fourteen matches for Northants. His first game for the county was his best, when he scored 98 against Worcestershire at Northampton in 1923. He batted for five hours, and, but for some rather undue caution in the 90s, must have reached a century in his first appearance in first-class cricket. He was finally leg-before. In whatever type of cricket he appeared he always played with the utmost application, and no-one ever enjoyed the game more. He was an uncle of Josh Gifford, the racehorse trainer and former champion steeplechase jockey.
