Charles Gilbert won an athletics Blue at Cambridge and it was in that rather than cricket that he shone. But when he came down in 1882 he played for Surrey against Middlesex at Lord's and then a second anf final time the following season against his old university. It is believed he subsequently played for Wiltshire - scoring 117* against Dorset in 1884 - and Staffordshire.
