James Roberts was a middle-order batsman who played once for Middlesex as an amateur in 1893 where he scored 35 in his only innings batting at No.10. He was in the Uppingham XI for two years as an allrounder who was also a sound fielder. In 1888-89 he toured South Africa with Major Wharton's team - they were to play the first two Tests in South Africa on that trip. He played extensively for the MCC and I Zingari.
