A tall and technically limited left-hand opener, Trevor Meale relied on grim determination rather than natural ability to see him through. After three uninspiring seasons for Wellington, he tried his luck in England where he played club cricket for Ealing and attempted - unsuccessfully - to qualify for Kent. He was a remarkable selection for New Zealand's 1958 tour of England - he had played one game in New Zealand in the previous four years, shortly before the squad was picked. He struggled through the summer - as did the entire side, generally reckoned to be one of the worst ever to visit England - ending with 502 runs at 21.82. He played in the first and last Tests, scraping 21 runs at 5.25. He did not appear in first-class cricket again after the second of those appearances.
