Warren Lees, the former New Zealand wicketkeeper, has been appointed the interim coach of the New Zealand women's team. Lees replaces Katrina Keenan, who resigned from her post at the start of the month to spend more time with her family.

Lees' contract will run till April 30, but a long-term decision on his role is yet to be made. He is also coaching the women's side Otago Sparks and will continue his role till the end of the domestic season.

"We're thrilled that Warren has come on board through to the end of the World Twenty20, in what is a busy time for the White Ferns," New Zealand Cricket head of cricket operations Lindsay Crocker, said.

"Having spent time as both an international player and coach, Warren brings years of knowledge and experience to the role, which is difficult to find. He knows what is required and is passionate about the game - he's got all the right attributes and we're confident he'll do a fantastic job."

Lees will begin his new role on Wednesday and his forthcoming assignments include a home series against West Indies in February- March, followed by the World T20 in Bangladesh.

Lees played 21 Tests and 31 ODIs for New Zealand between 1976 and 1983 with a highest Test score of 152 against Pakistan in Karachi. He coached his former team Otago in 1989 before taking over as coach of the New Zealand men's team between 1990 and 1993. He is also an occasional radio commentator on the game.

Great decision getting Lees on board...just a shame he is not in charge of the mens team.
