Women's World T20, 2nd Semi-Final: England Women v South Africa Women at Dhaka, Apr 4, 2014
Women's World T20 - 2nd semi final
England Women won by 9 wickets (with 19 balls remaining)
Played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur (neutral venue)
4 April 2014 - day/night match (20-over match)

2.25 pm We're almost all set for the first ball. England spill out of their huddle, South Africa's openers Lizelle Lee and Dane van Niekerk are at either end of the pitch. Anya Shrubsole, the leading wicket-taker in this World T20, has the ball. A slip in place. No player countdown for the Women though...

Oubaas: "Go SA Girls!!! Big game time!!! Already proud of you being their with our boys!!!!"

Raja: "Yesterday Windies got out of both the tournaments.. Can we expect this from South Africa today??"

David Boon, the match referee, leads the officials out for the national anthem ceremony. The players, who were waiting patiently on the steps into the ground, bustle out as well. Again, a rather sparse crowd in attendance. All the South African squad have their hands on their hearts as they sing along, while Edwards displayed great gusto during the England anthem

Mirpur looks a far more prettier picture compared to the lashing it received from a monumental storm last evening. But the men's game is under a bit of a cloud later in the evening. All set for a big-hitting, and first-time semi-finalists South Africa to lock horns with an England bowling attack that's been moving from strength to strength

2.00 pm England won the toss and choose to bowl Both teams have gone in with one change each. Tammy Beumont replaces Georgia Elwiss for England and Yolandi van der Westhuizen comes in for South Africa.

"Conditions are fantastic," says Charlotte Edwards. She's not too worried about the pitch. "Anya Shrubsole has led the attack brilliantly and lots of debutants have been playing well too." Edwards is wary of her opponents, "Played them a lot in recent times and even two years ago we knew they would be this good"

"We would have liked to bat first too," says Mignon du Preez, "It's a lovely, true deck. Looking forward to going out there and put up a good total." She's proud of the character South Africa has shown and says though they haven't beaten England she's looking forward to changing that

Ravi Nair: "The West Indies women can beat anyone on their day, but I will be terribly disappointed if England succumb to South Africa today (with all due respect to Mignon du Preez and her team, who are marvellous). In short, Go Lottie!!!"

1.55 pm There's a bit of a surprise waiting for us during the pitch report. This one has a bit of moisture, as evidenced by a smattering of live grass. The groundsmen have been told to keep it from getting too dry, but still batting shouldn't be too much of a bother and spin would still come into play

Shinod: "What's the update on the weather? Hailstorm or dalestorm for today evening?" It's very hot and humid right now. But rain is forecast later in the day

Mark: "Hoping that even if the England men were not up to the job, the ladies who have been superb, winning back-to-back Ashes convincingly, will win in Bangladesh! England have an excellent side and a good record. Losing to the West Indies in the group match was quite a surprise."

1.50 pm Good afternoon and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's live coverage of the second semi-final of the Women's World T20 between England and South Africa. The toss will be up in a few minutes, but in the meantime pore over Andrew McGlashan's preview for this game

0.1

Shrubsole to Lee, no run, swing into the batter as she keeps it nice and full, comes forward to block

0.2

Shrubsole to Lee, no run, pitched full and curving in on off stump, Lee comes forward to block again

0.3

Shrubsole to Lee, OUT, leg stump is knocked down into the ground! Shrubsole exults after a big inswinger sneaks between bat and pad. Lazy little drive from Lee though, didn't really go hard enough nor was she tight enough in defence. What a start for England!

L Lee b Shrubsole 0 (1m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Trisha Chetty, the wicketkeeper, bats at No.3

0.4

Shrubsole to Chetty, 1 run, picked away off her boots as Shrubsole sends in another full delivery arcing in at the batter

0.5

Shrubsole to van Niekerk, no run, considerable swing, and this ducked in rather late too. Van Niekerk's defence though is quite solid

0.6

Shrubsole to van Niekerk, no run, nudged away towards midwicket. Came forward and used the inswing to her advantage

End of over 1 (1 run) South Africa Women 1/1

    • D van Niekerk 0 (2b)

Danielle Hazel's offspin from the other end

1.1

Hazell to Chetty, no run, tossed up and outside off, Chetty lunges forward and blocks

1.2

Hazell to Chetty, no run, keeps to her crease this time as the length is pulled back, dabbed towards point

1.3

Hazell to Chetty, 1 run, presses forward and pushes to mid-off and she runs! It was straight to the fielder but she decided there was a run there. Would have been out by yards had that been hit

1.4

Hazell to van Niekerk, 2 runs, Knight makes up by saving a couple. Van Niekerk thumps this through the covers and the outfield seems just sluggish enough for this to be pulled back, although it did need a big chase and a bit of tumble

1.5

Hazell to van Niekerk, no run, flighted on the pads, defended

1.6

Hazell to van Niekerk, no run, good length ball around the off stump, blocked solidly

End of over 2 (3 runs) South Africa Women 4/1

2.1

Shrubsole to Chetty, 1 run, bit of room outside off and she steers this down to third man off the back foot. Easy stroke

2.2

Shrubsole to van Niekerk, 1 run, fullish and outside off, she comes forward and defends to the left of mid-off

2.3

Shrubsole to Chetty, 1 wide, directed the fuller, inswinger a little too straight

2.3

Shrubsole to Chetty, OUT, late swing and the stumps are shattered again! Chetty offers a bit of a gap between bat and pad and Shrubsole's consistent inward movement has exploited it. She was looking to go across the line, searching for midwicket

2.4

Shrubsole to van der Westhuizen, no run, full and dipping in, she taps it back to the bowler who goes for a ricochet onto the stumps by the umpire.

2.5

2.6

Shrubsole to van der Westhuizen, FOUR, sliced away through point, Shrubsole gave room and the batter placed it wonderfully. Beat point and the fielder at deep third man

    • D van Niekerk 3 (6b)

More spin from the other end, this is Rebecca Grundy, with an economy of 3.81

3.1

Grundy to van Niekerk, 1 run, loopy ball on off stump, drilled to extra cover

Toby Pearl: "England's mens bowlers take note! creating pressure works!"

3.2

Grundy to van der Westhuizen, no run, nicely tossed up and drifting in on off stump, defended

3.3

Grundy to van der Westhuizen, no run, the angle makes her play across the line towards square leg and misses, struck on the pads but it might be drifting down leg

3.4

Grundy to van der Westhuizen, OUT, this time she's trapped in front of off stump! After three balls with ample flight, she holds this one back just enough and has the batter going very deep into her crease. The ball skids on and hits the back pad and that's as plumb as it gets after she plays across the line

5.5

Grundy to du Preez, FOUR, back-to-back boundaries for du Preez! She had to reach for this a bit though as it was flighted outside off. Didn't reach the pitch, but went through with the stroke and the ball sailed over mid-off

9.1

Hazell to van Niekerk, OUT, this was going down leg on the leg before shout, but the direct hit at the bowler's end finds her well short! Tossed up on middle and turning further down as she is hit on the front pad. They try sneaking a single while the English players appeal, but the keeper's too smart for them. Rushes to the ball and the throw is even better. Terribly lazy running

9.4

Hazell to Kapp, OUT, goes flatter and quicker and so this slides down leg. Runs off the pads towards short fine leg and they try scampering a single. Anya Shrubsole claimed a two-for and after that a slew of run-outs refused to let the first-time semi-finalists any hope of a recovery. Tryon and du Preez were the only players into double-figures

"It's pretty much what I've bowled in this tournament," says Shrubsole, who now holds the record for the most wickets taken in a Women's World T20. "We fielded very well as a group too. With the rain around yesterday, I aways thought it would swing. Been in decent form, just wanted to keep it simple and hit the right areas. We've obviously done our reviews of their spinners and it's about going out there and playing positively now"

Mark: "After the horrific start, getting past 100 gives their bowlers something to bowl at. South Africa have made a big recovery. Is it enough though? Probably not, but it gives South Africa some hope."

PZ: "I think people seem to forget what chocking in games mean, and seem to chuck it at South Africa every game. Chocking is losing from a position you should really win from easily, or going into a game as red hot favs. Cant really say either of those happened today. Surely Australia mens team would have to be chockers of the WorldCup"
