Wilfred Carter,who died at Watford on November 1, aged 79, was born at Annesley (Notts) on May 14, 1896. The family soon moved to Bolsover in Derbyshire and Carter first appeared, as a right-hand bat, in 1920. His first-class record is 65 matches, 112 innings, 10 not out, 1812 runs, 145 highest score, 17.76 average; 16 wickets for 707 runs with right-arm 'donkey-drops', 26 catches. His highest score was made against Leicestershire in 1922 when he and A. H. M. Jackson added 182 for the eighth wicket, a record for the county which still stands. He also scored 100 not out against Northants in 1923. He left the staff at the end of the 1924 season but played in four matches in 1926. In 1929 and 1930 he was coach at Repton and was pro at Drumpellier for a few years. He joined Watford Football Club in 1920 as a left wing-half before Watford joined the Football League, and played for five years. Later he acted as coach and scout at Watford.
