Harrow-educated Vyell Walker was a right-hand middle-order batsman and a slow underarm bowler who played 52 times for Middlesex between 1859 and 1877. He took 334 wickets in his career, and around 1860 was regarded as the leading amateur cricketer in England - in 1859 he scored 108 and took 14 for 91 for England against Surrey at The Oval. One of the famous Walker family who dominated Middlesex's early years, he captained the county between 1864 and 1872, was treasurer from 1897 until his death in 1906, and was president in 1869 and again from 1898 to 1906. He was also president of MCC in 1891.
