John Wiley, the South African Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, who was found dead from gun shot wounds in Fishhoek, near Cape Town on March 29, was a sound right-handed batsman who played a few first-class games for Western Province and South African Universities between 1947-48 and 1948-49 before coming to England. He appeared in nine first-class matches for Oxford University between 1948 and 1951. He failed to win his Blue but his brother, W. G. A. Wiley did so in 1952. In all first-class cricket he scored 410 runs (18.64) with a highest score of 70 for Western Province against Rhodesia at Salisbury in 1947-48. A political hard-liner in the National Party interest he was MP for Simonstown and in 1983 was challenged by Eddie Barlow, Born in Cape Town on February 7, 1927, he was aged 60 at his death.
