With a name like Aneurin Donald, it is no wonder that Welsh cricket lovers become a little misty-eyed when they consider the potential of Glamorgan's young batting hope. Emotions certainly ran high at Colwyn Bay in 2016 when Donald, at 19, spanked 234 off 136 balls, equalling the fastest double-century in first-class cricket, in a remarkable maiden Championship hundred. Derbyshire were despatched for 15 sixes - he cleared the ropes to reach 100, 150 and 200 - only one short of Graham Napier's Championship record. A full Championship season did not quite bring 1,000 runs, but his promise was undoubted.
Donald only played five Championship matches in 2015 but that did not spot some from observing his place in the England U19 side against Australia, where he shared captaincy duties with Haseeb Hameed, and wondering if he could become the first Glamorgan player to represent the full England side since Simon Jones starred in their memorable 2005 Ashes success.
He has a strong Glamorgan pedigree: his great uncle, Bernard Hedges, played 422 matches for the county between 1950 and 1967.
Donald, a middle-order batsman from Swansea, developed well through age-group and second XI cricket. He made his Glamorgan first-class debut in the final match of the season in 2014 when he made 59 at roughly a run a ball against Hampshire in the second innings. His formastive years were spent as a key part of Mumbles' victorious side in the South Wales Premier League.
