Match Facts

March 20, 2014
Start time 1530 local (0930 GMT)

Big Picture

While neither side is officially out of the tournament yet, Afghanistan and Nepal are almost certainly playing only for pride in their final Group A game. Moreover, as their match is the first of the day, they won't know what would be required in the event of Bangladesh making a colossal mess against Hong Kong (and with Afghanistan's NRR currently -1.271, even Kabir Khan's assessment that they have a 1% chance looks a bit generous).

Nepal are like everyone's favourite new band, winning plaudits for their style, resilience and passion for the game. They have recorded a famous win and put on a creditable display against a fired-up Bangladesh. Now, they face one of their bogey sides, the hard nuts of the Associate world who still seem a little sore from falling heavily at the first hurdle in this World T20.

Mohammad Nabi knew his side's best chance of making the Super 10 stage lay in mugging Bangladesh in their own manor for the second time in a month and he has seemed a little deflated since that plan went awry. Victory over Hong Kong was comfortable but nowhere near the crushing margin required, despite Shafiqullah's disdainful six-hitting at the end. A win over Nepal will confirm their international status, but they are desperate for more.

Victory for Nepal would keep them in contention to progress, with their position in second place buoyed by a thumping win over Hong Kong, but they will be facing an opponent who has held the whip-hand in most of their recent encounters. Given Bangladesh's furious form so far, it is likely to be academic.

Form guide

Afghanistan WLLLW Nepal LWWLW

Watch out for

Dawlat Zadran has already forced Shakib Al Hasan and Mark Chapman into a tangle with his bouncer so far and he has certainly got some wheels, regularly clocking over 140kph. One of Afghanistan's most confrontational bowlers, it will be interesting to see if he tries to engage with the normally serene Nepal batsmen.

With his skip to the crease and low-slung left-arm action, energetic fielding and eye-catching celebrations, Shakti Gauchan has become one of the most recognisable of Nepal's players. He suffered some punishment against Bangladesh but should find the more spin-wary Afghanistan batsmen an enjoyable challenge to bowl to.

Team news

Ashgar Stanikzai came in against Hong Kong but his anchoring innings threatened to weigh his side down. Either one of the experienced pair of Nawroz Mangal and Karim Sadiq could return. Mirwais Ashraf provides an option to beef up the seam attack.

Afghanistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2 Najeeb Tarakai, 3 Najibullah Zadran, 4 Mohammad Nabi (capt), 5 Shafiqullah, 6 Karim Sadiq, 7 Gulbadin Naib, 8 Samiullah Shenwari, 9 Hamza Hotak, 10 Dawlat Zadran, 11 Shapoor Zadran

Nepal have shown faith with their top order. The openers have been asked to attack before patiently building from Nos. 3 to 5. They could not finish off either of their previous two innings in style, and Binod Bhandari could make way after scores of 1 and 0 from 4 balls so far.

Nepal (possible): 1 Subash Khakurel (wk), 2 Sagar Pun, 3 Gyanendra Malla, 4 Paras Khadka (capt), 5 Sharad Vesawkar, 6 Binod Bhandari, 7 Naresh Budayair, 8 Basant Regmi, 9 Shakti Gauchan, 10 Sompal Kami, 11 Jitendra Mukhiya

Pitch and conditions

There is goodly pace in the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury surface, with a couple of different strips used so far to mitigate against wear. Dew will be less of a factor in the afternoon game. There was a spell of rain on Wednesday afternoon, after a brief period of windy weather. The showers did not affect the ground conditions as the stadium has good drainage facilities.

Stats and trivia

  • Afghanistan have won all their recent encounters with Nepal, including nine and seven-wicket wins at the World T20 Qualifier last year.

  • Mohammad Shahzad's 68 against Hong Kong was his fifth half-century in T20 internationals.

I don't think BD will lose against HK. But if any upset happens than run rate will be counted. So from this perspective I'll want AFG may win in a narrow margin as their run rate is too low to make Super 10.

We all Nepalese would like to see whoever qualify frm this Group (most likely BD) atleast beat one team in second round to show that world ranking&stats doesnt mean eth in t20. Finally would like to wish our friendly SAARC neighbouring nations IND,PAK,SLK&BD for he cup and hope atleast ur nation cricket board (esp BCCI) to give our boyz opportunity to play friendly matches with ur A grade team or in IPL/BPL initially and make the world cricket see that every new world cricket records are set frm South Asian nation players. I request BCB to give chances to Nepal cricketers in our domestic tournaments. Currently 7 of the afghan national players have played regularly here so far. I don't think afg deserves that amount of support after showing very poor attitude couple of days ago. We should replace them by talented Nepalese cricketers which will also increase the quality of our domestic tournaments.

Nepalese cricketers on the other hand are much more brilliant and modest in both on and off the field. They have a very cool and talented captain in Paras Khadka, also Basant Regmi and some other spinners showed immense quality even in heavy dew situations. Wish Nepal all the best.

    • POSTED BY on | March 20, 2014, 4:36 GMT

A win here would be the icing on the cake for Nepal's first ever journey in the global event as they have fared fairly well so far in the tourney. Barring some mathmatical calculations, this is certain that the this is where the Associates could make up to, at least for this edition of world T20 and team Nepal and fans back home all are aware of this bitter fact but we don't have any ill feelings as we are proud of what have been achived out of resources so low. All we want to do is come home with a final win over arch-rivals Afghanistan. The win over AFG will do a world of good to us as they have been kind of psychological barrier to us in recent years.

To all Afghan fans who talks about win against BD also note that they payed with weaker BD side without Sakib, Tamim and Mushrafee. So Nepal played with much stronger side in T-20. Nepal has also skill to beat Afghanistan. Just respect Nepal.

    • POSTED BY on | March 19, 2014, 23:33 GMT

From moral point of view I will wish Nepal should win. The Afghan supporters are arrogant in nature and not respectful comparing to supporters from all other countries. Problem is the dew factor will help Afghan fast bowlers and they extremely good. So far the bowling is the best weapon for Afghan side. We will pray for Nepal to win and this will give a good lesson to Afghan. The great fans of Nepal touch the heart of all cricket fans. Wish Nepal will rise after this . Go Nepal Go! love from Bangladesh! We believe Nepal's Batting is excellent and they have quality bowlers too. Good luck Nepal!

@Tareq Ali. BD beating Afghan team in the Asia cup finals and Winning a match in Trinidad are not counted for stats. They are unofficial games. We only care about what matters in ICC records.

    • POSTED BY Shajadul on | March 19, 2014, 21:26 GMT

Two teams are similar in terms of strength. Batting power of Nepal seems a bit better (intelligent) . AFG has better pace attach. On the other hand, Nepal has better spin attack. If there are no due factor then Nepal should win this match.

    • POSTED BY troll_dum on | March 19, 2014, 21:05 GMT

The rate at which Afghanistan and Nepal have improved, has really pleased the cricket fans all over the world, these 2 side are 2 most favored sides after our own. I congratulate Nepal and Afghanistan for the spirit shown. Though i seriously want our hopeless BCCI to extend support more and more support to our friendly neighbors, if they are not already helping. Match practice all round the year, by inviting them to domestic/ international friendlies would a a great start. Sending IPL teams for tours, would certainly add to the worth of IPL in a positive manner. And we Indian fans certainly hope many many positive acts coming together. That would help develop political scenario in Subcontinent in unprecedented ways.

    • POSTED BY burnt_cow on | March 19, 2014, 20:37 GMT

AFG may seem to be at upper hand for aggressive attitude and hitting capability, but T20 is more like a game of mind then strength. Nepal is quite capable of turning the game around as they proved against BD. Whereas AFG players were too much talking just after one upset in Asia cup , Nepal was trying to concentrate on their game. AFG batsmen surely going to struggle against Gauchan, Regmi and Khadka. Also Khadka and Malla are very smart batsman. Nabi might be much better than Khadka but it's the smartness that matters in the game. These Nepal players should try to play in Dhaka Premier League and BPL. They have a bright future. AFG has come long way but if they don't change their attitude they are going to end up like Kenya. Kenya was a far better team than BD till 2004. They just failed to progress.

    • POSTED BY Monjur_Elahi on | March 19, 2014, 20:29 GMT

AFG has talented players but lacks maturity. They are emotional and yet to learn professionalism. Unfortunately, they don't seem in hand of a very professional coach, who doesn't only recognise the reality of the situation, but also guide the team with non-existent hopes. If they had to give themselves a good chance, they should've taken the HK game with plans to increase the net run-rate. The tactics of batting fire in the end didn't really help them and has zeroed their chance to qualify. Very short-sighted coaching strategy. They need better coaching if they are to improve in the future. Nepal captain seems to be a mature cricket head, comes up with clear plans and strategies, leads the team from the front, other players 100% dedicated too. Very professional approach with calm posture, variety in balling dept and steady batting display, Nepal is a very strong contender to win this match. AFG should aim to take some lesson from the Nepal team. Good luck Nepal.

Feel so much harsh to hear about one percent chance for afghanistan team, but still well played against hong kong. Afghanistan team are not using their batting line up well, because they have so much talent but needs abit of polishing their abilities. For that they have to keep a batting coach must..

Why everyone forget Afghanistan is still associate nation. Give them test nation status to play for 14 years like Bangladesh did with big teams then I am sure we will win our matches against India, Pak, Australia, England and others. Bangladesh are still playing with those team like associate teams do.

    • POSTED BY on | March 19, 2014, 18:45 GMT

      @ Tariq Ali

Albert is right the contest is 1-1 between them. Afghans lost the first game in 2010 which was their second year in cricket. We have learnt a lot since that and I can surely say in next few years Afghans will not only extend the lead against Bangladesh but also will give good competition to big teams. Afghans have good physics and heights than Bangalis which will help them in bowling, fielding and also batting. Nobody can hide our talent but experience which we are gaining from these games. I can't see Bangladesh beat Afghanistan in Australia when they meet in World Cup 2015. I am not talking arrogantly but have faith in my teams's future. Tomorrow even if Nepal wins will not match them with us because we are in a position to be matched with Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Ireland

    • POSTED BY Missnepal on | March 19, 2014, 17:47 GMT

Pakistan - grown Afghan players are in a better position than home-grown Nepali players. Nepal have never won any match against Afghanistan recently. And afghans have already played against cricket super-powers like India, Pakistan and even won fourteen yr old test playing nation Bangladesh. This shows their caliber. However, this is first ever Nepal's appearance in World Cup. So, we have nothing to loose.Only to win. So boys, even if you fail to grab a win against Afghanis you will always be our heroes.Give your best. We love you.

    • POSTED BY on | March 19, 2014, 17:46 GMT

Mr Albert for your kind information the stats is as follows:

Bd beaten Afg in last Asian game final. Bd beaten Afg in T20 in Trinidad in a tournament Bd beaten Afg in T20 in WC 2014 Bd A beaten Afg A in Junior World Cup

We lost to Afg only once. We will recover this in coming WC. Better check the stats and talk.

    • POSTED BY Albert_cambell on | March 19, 2014, 16:57 GMT

Afghanistan should not worry about anything, even if they lose to nepal. You guys have already beaten BD at home. You should be more than happy about it. The record still suggests 1-1.

Given the previous outings AFG vs NP, it is most likely that Afghanistan will win this game, but it will be a close contest. I hope that both teams play well and entertain us. No question BD will progress to the top 10, unless they lose badly to HK. DB got lucky with Afghanistan lack of experience and the fact that Nabi made huge mistake in player selection with hurt them at the end.

I predict an easy win for Afghanistan here. Quality, pace and talent are all in Afghan side. They recently beat Bangladesh in Asia Cup and far ahead of teams like Nepal. Afghans are unbeaten from Nepal and I can see the run easily continues. Sorry Nepal fans but this is the fact

Afghanistan should not worry about anything, even if they lose to nepal. You guys have already beaten BD at home. You should be more than happy about it. The record still suggests 1-1.
