Afghanistan prey on nervous hosts

38

Afghanistan are focusing on taking advantage of any slip-up made by Bangladesh in their World T20 opening-day encounter. Coach Kabir Khan has said that all the pressure is now on the home side, and the thought has been echoed by the captain Mohammad Nabi.

"We will play a relaxed game," Nabi said. "Our coach Kabir Khan has said total pressure on the Bangladesh team. They are playing at home and have already lost against us. They have beaten us in T20s but both were close games. They didn't win easily, and this time we give them more tough time."

Earlier on Friday, Kabir had said that Bangladesh will be feeling the heat because of various reasons. "There will be a bit of pressure on us as well but I think the Bangladeshis will be facing more pressure. They lost to us in the Asia Cup, their whole crowd is going to put a lot of pressure on them, as well as us.

"If the game is going well in their favour, they'll be supporting them, otherwise they'll be against them. That is the sort of pressure when you're hosting a world tournament and you want to be in the tournament and you're afraid of getting out of it ... I personally think they are facing more pressure than us."

Bangladesh's wins have come in T20 games, first in the 2010 Asian Games gold medal game and then in a quadrangular tournament in Trinidad two years ago. While a predominantly Under-23 side had won in Guangzhou, on the second occasion it was a full-strength side that played under the name of a BCB XI.

But Afghanistan won the first encounter of note between two sides, in the Asia Cup. The 32-run win in Fatullah has tilted the momentum towards them. "We are not playing names. We are playing the game. We don't know who is on the other side - Shakib, Tamim or Mortaza. We just play the game and situation," Nabi said.

"Afghanistan is a better T20 team. We have four to six allrounders in the squad. [Another] plus point is our fielding and attacking bowling. We will try our best to perform very well and qualify for the next round."

Mominul, Gazi, Zia, Rubel didn't get chance in best 11 for Bangladesh but Afghanistan folded by 72 runs!! Afghanistan needs to improve in their batting techniques rather than playing rush shot.

Guys. Learn and understand cricket. Both team needs to work for another 10 years to even debate what you guys are writing here. Modesty. Please do not make fun of yourself or your country or team members by comparing them with likes of Steyn and other players. Tigers, please stop calling yourself that as you guys tamed like cat in every bog match. Have patience your turn will come maybe after 10 years.

    Afghanistan will win today

  • QTS_ on March 16, 2014, 8:56 GMT

    Interesting hyperbole from both sides:

AFG: Nabi is among the best allrounders in the world, Hamid Hasan and Shapoor Zadran are the best new ball bowlers in Asia (and maybe the world), Shenwari is a world-class destroyer.

BAN: Shakib lies along the ranks of Kallis, BD spin attack is world-beaters, BPL is the second-most influential T20 league, BCB is the second-most powerful board.

Can everyone settle down modestly and accept that there is a big world outside his own team? There is no humiliation in accepting that one's team is not the best.

  • lightOj on March 16, 2014, 7:30 GMT

@Hamid79, Well said, mate! Some BD fans are always in search of excuses which is pathetic in the international format of cricket. A defeat is always a defeat, win is always a win. But nonetheless BD is still stronger in batting, spin bowling, fielding and in experience. So they are still favorite for this one.Afghanistan will also try to manipulate the opportunity. So waiting for a heck of a game.

  • i_golam on March 16, 2014, 7:02 GMT

No doubt that BD will win easy today !!!

  • Hamid79 on March 16, 2014, 6:56 GMT

@ Rigger Nabi... It seems like BDs believe in Luck more than skills.. Your history of losing after losing matches since ever was always due to luck.. Lost to Zim was due to luck.. Lost to Sir was due to luck .. Unable to qualify for Quarter finals in U19 was due to luck.. And your lost against Afghanistan in Assia Cup was due to luck.. It seems like your team have a very unlucky "luck" .. I would recommend that instead of hiring Expensive coaches you should seek to buy som luck for your team.. You may wish to hire luck movie team to help you in this...

  • Mayar on March 16, 2014, 3:53 GMT

Afghanistan a better side in T20 cricket and in excellent form, a rising nation in all formats of cricket, having good chance of beating Bangladesh, and off course other associate nation comfortably. A good chance even beating one or two in Top eight !!!

Acording to afghans-dawlat zadran and shapoor is more dangerous combination than styen and morkel.and nabi is the no 1 allrounder in the world.shenwari is more dangerous than afridi.so bd will loose against no 1 side afghana.

all the best to the afghan brothers..........

  • on March 16, 2014, 2:14 GMT

The poor Afghans will find out today how lucky they were to win a game against BD in BD. For the sake of the Afghan team and their fans, I just hope they lose with respect.

  • rohanblue on March 16, 2014, 2:06 GMT

@Warm_Coffee dude there is no wouldve or shouldve in the sports, we also wouldve won the game against pak if afridi didnt hit those two sixes.....

  • RED-TIGER on March 16, 2014, 0:42 GMT

Guys! it's a T20 match.. could be anybodies game.. just enjoy the 6's :)

  • neanderthal on March 15, 2014, 23:45 GMT

@warm_coffee, too many ifs and buts in your statement mate. Most international matches are won by 2-3 players having a good day and the rest doing ok. You can't just say if you left out kohli and Sami you would have won. Maybe someone else would have stepped up then. And if the dew made chasing so easy then why did you lose against Afg chasing.

Regarding this match, T20 games negate any difference in quality anyway. BD is still the stronger team and if they play to their full potential they should win. But when BD beats Nepal and HK to qualify, please someone ensure Mashrafi or Mushfiq don't get the mic. They are embarrassing.

  • on March 15, 2014, 23:35 GMT

I can give a guarantee to all that Bangladesh will give prove why he is miles ahead of Afghanistan.

  • huffpost on March 15, 2014, 21:25 GMT

@warm_coffee...i am glad that at least you accepted that India is a much better team than BD unlike some of the other fans...let there be no discussion about it now as the upcoming match is BD's most important game...let us see if BD can beat Afghan team..I think the chances are 60-40 towards Afghan looking at the current form and historic T20 performance of BD..

  • on March 15, 2014, 21:04 GMT

Hoping for AFG win tomorrow which is not easy our players need to play with full strength without any mistake if they want to progress to the second round hopefully we can see some good attacking from AFG

  • smukhles on March 15, 2014, 20:48 GMT

@rakon_me, With due respect to your opinion, Bangladesh has more than just 1 win against India ( 3 ) including ICC WORLD CUP 2007 in Guyana. By no means Bangladesh is close to India as a team yet despite their victory here and there and we do understand that very well but does that mentioned logic of yours which is pointing at mine really applies here? Look at Bangladesh's record so far, we have registered "WIN" against each and every full members of ICC, can you really compare that with Aftghanistan yet by any means? And does these victories means we are better than the other 9 teams? I guess no, wright? Yet we are indeed way above Afghanistan. Please accept this fact.

  • Warm_Coffee on March 15, 2014, 19:26 GMT

@rakon: No offence but Bangladesh would've won if not for Virat Kohli. He and Sami were the only players who played exceptionally well and the rest of the Indian team in that line-up played poorly. How on earth can you let a team like BD score 279 without Tamim and Shakib? also take in the fact Rahim poor captaincy by removing Ziaur Rahman from bowling when Indians were struggling against him. I'm not saying BD are better than India as obviously India are miles ahead of Bangladesh and have better players but stop trying to make India like a fearsome unbeatable team or something. For sure if Bangladesh were chasing instead, most likely too they would've beaten India.

  • bongodeshi on March 15, 2014, 19:00 GMT

I think the fact that pressure is very much on Bangladesh, will actually work against Afghanistan. Bd has too many laid back players in the side, which is one reason why they r not that consistent as a team. Players like Tamim, Mushfiq, Shakib, Mashrafi, Anamul etc need the weight of pressure to play at 100% capacity. In last game against the afghans, there were those typical slackness resulting from laid back attitude. Next game they had their back against the walls and came out good, denied win by Afridi's beastly batting. Also absence of shakib was a major factor....teams like bd, zim, ireland, afghanistan rely heavily on their star players....absence of those players can impact the team in different ways.

  • huffpost on March 15, 2014, 18:56 GMT

@smukhles..the same logic applies to bangla fans..BD defeated india in just one match in asia cup 2 yrs back and from then on the fans claimed bd is better team than India for 2 years..look at what happened in Asia cup this year..now BD is not even in 4 th place in Asia...as far as this match goes, i will put my money on Afghans because BD team will choke under pressure and Afghans play freely..mind you they have a very good bowling attack and shapoor zadran will take out the bangla openers off stump...

  • on March 15, 2014, 18:47 GMT

afghan will lose badly. all the best

  • on March 15, 2014, 18:17 GMT

Regarding that Asia cup match, the only credit was that afghan came back from 90-5 thats it. Afghan will struggle against the spin of Gazi and Shakib just watch.

Posted by sporso on (March 15, 2014, 16:51 GMT) As an Indian fan I would say these Afghan supporters are talking too much, they just own one match against a test playing nation n I guess which was an upset, when the Irish team beat English n Netherlands beat Australia or even keneya went to wc semifinal that times their supporters did spoke that much arrogantly, these Afghan fans doesn't posses any cricket sense. I think agfans will have their ans tomorrow. Still best wishes for them.

  • on March 15, 2014, 17:53 GMT

Listen all those BD fans, if you are still not convinced by a defeat in Asia cup & said that no credit goes to Afghan side for playing good cricket, then let's see if it goes down to your throat to see another defeat when we clash tomorrow. So be prepare & come out to the field with your full strength , cause we do want to hear your excuses that this guy was not in the team or that guy was not in the team. So with all respect, we Afghans are born warrior, never try to make us scared. Let's do this again. We Will Rock Inshallah.

Dear Ban fans!It is not only about victoryof Afghanistan over Bang that makes us to talk about our team..our team has given tough time to world strongest teams... Pakistan won the only t-twenty match from Afg in the last ball that also from a wide delivery..we got 7 of pakistan batsmen for 127 in the asian cup .we did not let srilanka to score more than 3 runs per over till 40th over in asian cup etcc.... If we have lost all these matches that is due to lack of experience not lack of talent.... my last words for you are bring something with yourselves to the ground to wipe your tears with after losing to us......Afghans are made for cricket and they are physically strong to blow physically weak bang....

This Afghan team and their Coach, Captain as well as the players are truly playing the broken record again and again by saying " THEY HAVE ALREADY LOST AGAINST US", really? Few years ago Nether land managed to beat England Team on U.K soil, So that makes them superior than the English? Few years ago the Afghans lost to Bangladesh in Asian Games final and we remember those faces after the match! Now just one win in the Asia cup against us due to our own failure and not to the Afghan's credit and we have been hearing time and again what they have done and what they are going to do today, O.K, Bring it on man!
