West Indies have been in Bangladesh for a week, but they still looked jetlagged in a bizarre innings of 129 for 7, which set up another comprehensive win for India, who were excellent with the ball. From the moment Bhuvneshwar Kumar surprised Dwayne Smith with a first over full of outswingers, West Indies sleepwalked through most of their innings, failing to make India pay for some sloppy fielding. India will be only mildly annoyed with that because of the stupendous work done by their bowlers.

Bhuvneshwar set the template with the most economical figures in Twenty20 internationals - 3-0-3-0, Shami kept the pressure up at the other end, R Ashwin bowled out pretty early to make sure that pressure pushed West Indies to the breaking point, and then Amit Mishra applied the coup de grĂ¢ce with the wickets of Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo off successive deliveries.

Without taking away from how well India bowled, it was an incredibly passive effort from West Indies. Despite a generous helping of extras, West Indies were 46 for 1 after 10 overs, Chris Gayle's 34 off 33 was his slowest 30-or-more-ball knock, Dwayne Smith prodded and fumbled around for 11 off 29, and the rest crumbled under the pressure of needing more than 100 in the last 10 to even be competitive when the dew would come in. All this despite two dropped catches: Gayle on 0 and 19.

There was something special about India's bowling at the top, especially Bhuvneshwar. Every time he bowled full to Smith, he looked like he would get a wicket. In the lead-up to the match, Suresh Raina had spoken about how West Indies struggle to get the runs when the big sixes are not forthcoming. Darren Sammy said, okay stop us hitting the sixes. Only six sixes were hit in the innings, and the singles were miserably low.

When those sixes were hit, as Gayle did as soon as legspinner Mishra was introduced, it involved a huge risk. Be that as it may, when you are 24 after six overs, with your partner struggling to get bat on ball, you are under the pressure to take those risks. The first one brought Gayle a six, but Mishra's wrong'un next ball should have had him. Yuvraj Singh joined Ashwin as Gayle's benefactor, but an extended spell of disciplined bowling from Ashwin - overs 6, 8, 10 and 12 for 24 runs - made sure Gayle didn't benefit much at all.

With no bad balls on offer, both Gayle and Marlon Samuels were handcuffed. The two are the last pair you want in the middle when you are hoping for quick running because boundaries are not available. Quite a few twos were turned into ones before Gayle was run out not even trying to make it to the striker's end. Dhoni could have gone off and finished his media interviews and come back to take the bails off; Gayle would still have not made it. At 62 for 2 in 13 overs, with Samuels struggling, they may as well have finished the interviews then.

Mishra put paid to all hopes of a Colombo-final-like comeback with a sharp legbreak that provided his captain his 127th stumping in all international cricket. Nobody has more. Bravo was next beaten comprehensively by the googly, and the game was practically over.

Some indiscipline from India towards the end took West Indies to 129, and despite a poorly called lbw of Shikhar Dhawan, this wasn't going to challenge India. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma saw India through with calm half-centuries, even though a struggling Yuvraj Singh manufactured some late drama. The only thing missing on another satisfying night for India was a push for a big net run-rate boost. If they play like they have been playing, they might not even need to think of the net run-rate.

India unfortunately will finish their last game against Australia on the 28th while the rest of the Teams finish theirs on the 30th. This gives them a clear advantage to tweak their performance to meet the target NRR just like Holland did against Ireland. Australia will be facing Bangladesh and the Aussies will believe they can dominate proceedings to manipulate the NRR. Even more interesting is the last game between two unpredictable teams i.e. Pakistan and West Indies and NRR may also come into play here where a win may simply not be good enough. India once again find themselves vulnerable to the NRR.

Posted by   on (March 25, 2014, 18:02 GMT)

I am having this sinking feeling that the NRR is going to bite us in the back. Only wins against Australia and Bangladesh is going to guarantee us a spot in the SF.

this is very low score in t20 but India took more time than others

Posted by MohammedWasi on (March 25, 2014, 7:05 GMT)

Indian team's net run rate should be higher. 7-8 runs short in the points table. Somebody from the ICC should be notified about this. We have had been kicked out before due to lesser run rate in the past.

Posted by spinkingKK on (March 25, 2014, 0:10 GMT)

Why is this an easy win? I can only see India winning with 2 balls to spare. In my books, it is a tight finish. Having 10 wickets in hand or 2 wickets in hand is immaterial when there r only two balls left. This fixation over keeping wickets in hand was what caused this poor score for the West Indies. There's no excuse for wasting some 29 balls to score 11 in T20s. Dwyne Smith and others should have just thrown their wickets if they cant force the runrate. These guys will try to force the irrelevant runrate and lose their wickets if they were playing test matches. In T20s, they treat their wickets precious and prevent utilizing the full batting line-up.India's slow batting was excusable, because they knew their target. Still, there's a possibility they could regret this when there's three way tie between India/Pakistan/Australia and net runrate decides top two.

It looked like two international teams with great reputations played an ICC T20 World Cup Match. It was the most boring match of this tournament so far. One does not have to think hard and conclude that one team had to win. It is a game of two, after all. And in all probability, one of these two teams will qualify for the semi final and the indications point out to an elimination then. Their brands of cricket will not succeed against the other big teams with so called smaller reputations!

Posted by VickGower on (March 24, 2014, 22:14 GMT)

Yuvraj needs to spend a TON of time in the domestic circuit & rebuild his confidence which is, to put it mildly, shot. He is so out of it that he is flooring easy catches. He should make way for Rahane who could open with Dhawan. Rohit could come 1st or 2nd down. Needs to be done quickly before Yuvraj really hurts India. One could consider Stuart Binny instead of Rahane too. You get another bowling option.

Posted by OttawaRocks on (March 24, 2014, 18:14 GMT)

After re-analyzing I'm now convinced that India only need to beat Australia to qualify for the semi-finals and they don't even have to worry about NRR. Why? If this occurs and if India also lose to BD then realistically India's NRR should remain competitive (BD may beat India but unlikely will crush them). If so, Australia will be out (incurring 2 losses) while one of Pak/WI will also be out since they still have to play each other (ensuring a 2 loss record for one of them). The next question is what will BD do? If BD win only 1 game against Pak/WI/Aus then India advances (BD becomes another 2 loss team). If BD wins their 3 remaining games then India advances (Pak/WI/Aus all become 2 loss teams). The only weird case is if BD wins 2 of their remaining games, i.e., a 3 way tie occurs. If true, we return to NRR but my belief is it will be hard for BD to pass India unless their NRR is sufficiently strong (unlikely). Thus, India's main obstacle is Aus with NRR less of a concern.

@Anand Kumar. Why are you so negative with Rohit Sharma. The SA tour you are talking about, what is happening woth DeQuock now ? He scored 3 centuries in 3 ODIs in SA. Here in both matches he falied miserably. You are talking about Steyn-Rohit. You should remember it was Rohits first SA tour and just 4th test. Every batsman in the world always had tough time in SA. Remember Pujara in his first tour of SA. Gavaskar too had very poor English tour after his debue series 774 runs against WI. Gelespy too scored doubke century in BD. Can you compare Gelespy with Rahim or Tamim. Steyn is experienced & top workd class pace bowler in the wirkd today. He has every right to dusturb any newcomer like Rohit by passing comments. In the same inning Rohit in his short battle with Steyn, hit two marvelous boundries against Steyn. Though he not played big knock, he stood against Steyn in that inning. There are so many cases in past, so many batsmen faced such comments from senior opponent players.

Sammy had said stop us from playing big shots, if you can, they didn't think how will they cope Indian Spinners if they get help from pitch by just playing big shots...Actually WI got Over-confident coming into this match, they dropped most of their wicket-taking bowlers, didn't change their style of batting, they just kept on hitting shots in the air in trying to show / prove their Domination, they were not willing to play Along the Ground, for that you need Skill of Timing.... Just kept on Swinging the Bat, You can't be in just one Frame of Mind all the time, you need to change your game & mindset according to situation...Today's match clearly showed, in any format taking Singles is the most important aspect of batting, In first 6-overs took only 2-3 singles out of 30-balls..They created so much pressure on themselves that were not able to comeback after that.. I must say Bhuvi was Brilliant in the initial overs..He set the momentum for India.....

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 16:01 GMT)

WI batting line up should be Gayle, Smith, Simmons, Bravo, Ramdin if early wickets fall. with good start promote Sammy and Russell ahead of Ramdin. Samuels Should be demoted, he uses up too many balls before he gets going. This puts pressure on the other batsman and gives the momentum to the bowling team. Also with so many big hitters WI game plan should be to score at least 50 runs in the power play, if early wicket falls send Russell to pinch hit if he fails then re-calculate and promote Samuels.

Posted by Temuzin on (March 24, 2014, 14:58 GMT)

Some of the fans are so one eyed that they dont see more than a match. Bhuvi was great in this match but was horrible in previous match. Its game some day you play great and on other day you may not. Jaddu has been playing great but fans are quick to dismiss him on one bad over in this match. He still got three wickets so stop being unfair to him.

The words are ringing around Bangladesh now that All teams playing their matches in the evening (7.30 start) if win toss will bowl first and this will be the theme of this World Cup, not sure this is a good sign for this tournament. No team should have an advantage for just winning a toss. This will be a great issue going into Semi and Final stages as all the matches are starting at that time.

Posted by malepas on (March 24, 2014, 13:13 GMT)

@Sandt, Just look at the time when Ind v Pak match started to when PAK v Aus started, there is a huge difference in afternoon and evening conditions mate and that's exactly my point.

Great Win for India!!! But what was disappointing is the fact that the West Indies team was not able to manage a more competitive game. It seems that in the last few years they have no pride left. They seem so casual about defeat after defeat that it is hard to believe that teams from West Indies once instilled fear amongst its opponents for a substantial time period. Its true that every cricketer these days is a professional but no set of players behave so indifferently and callously as the West Indian players when it comes to playing for their country. And this is not a one match observation. This has been going for a few years now. As an ardent cricket fan i sincerely wish that the Windies players get their wits right and show us their competitive spirit which was once their hallmark!!!!

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 11:52 GMT)

The bowlers after a long time, did, as was being required of them time & again ! They would have done still more splendidly, if some of the regulation catches had been taken cleanly. This would have put the reigning champions in an awkward situation !

The Caribbean players' body language and their lack of the Killer Instinct, right from the start, left much to be desired. It was expected at some point of the game, there will be some sort of acceleration, and that was not to be. This led to some sort of a one-sided subdued affair, lacking entertainment.

The Indian Team after having consolidated their position, could have shifted gears so that the net run rate would have risen reasonably well. So if at all, the net run rate comes in, to choose the semifinalists, we should not be caught unawares !

Yuvaraj, need not have been sent at no 4 and the Team Management could have taken a conscious decision to have sent in-form Raina, so that we could have run with atleast 2 overs to spare !

Very well played Team India. When india looses people have something to say against it, when tey win people have something to say about it. The fact is everyone is "No1 envies the ugly and the weak." So i hope all haters got the answers. And as for indians commenting. Uv, rahane, binny etc etc will play wen team wants dem to play.. Keep ur critic to urself. Dey are the best and dats y dey r representing the country.. Learn to support ur team and nt critcise dem for no reason. Nrr, uv etc.. Come out of it.. Matches with australia and bd r left. We must hope and support our team to win both the matches.. All the best team india..

I'm really happy about India success after months. I was expecting this. Indian bowlers were heavily criticized for years and now they outplays their strong batting line-up. Hats off to Mishra, Bhuvi, Jaddu & Ashwin. Shami was bit expensive but I think he is not that bad. Mishra was the game changer in both matches. The way he bowl is superb and Bhuvi surprised me with his magical spell with 3-0-3-0. I think last over should have been bowled by Bhuvi. Indian bowlers are promising. Mishra is the man to watch. I'm pretty sure that he'll do better in overseas conditions too. Another Warne from India? SL too need good leg-spinner instead of too much ob's. Prasanna has the potential. Good luck India for the next matches.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 10:40 GMT)

A bowler who has given 3runs from 3overs and still he was denied last over by Dhoni clearly shows his favoritism for Jadeja. Guys Jadeja is not the all rounder India needs. He can just bowl in bits and pieces and clearly far away from a Batsman who can change the game. He is only there because of Dhoni. Binny should be included as an All rounder or get the Pathan brothers.

Posted by cric_passion on (March 24, 2014, 10:34 GMT)

@ Amit Jain: Its really sad to see people writing down comments without any facts. Really!! A Flat Track Bully.. Maybe you need to find out what it means. There are 2 types of bowlers Fast and Slower ones. Its not easy to be really good against both. But Kohli has proved already. In Aus and NZL he averages over 53 and in subcontinents you don't need to ask. Cheers!! Though we won the match with last 2 balls to spare but it wasn't a difficult chase. And India having worst bowling attack?? They have done well than others in so called pitches as many of you think as only meant for Our batsmen to score 100s at ease. Appreciate where its due and criticize when required. Don't be biased just enjoy the game and support your teams. Good Luck!!

Posted by anoop3301 on (March 24, 2014, 10:17 GMT)

@MelbourneMiracle: Good analysis but SA or NZ have never knocked off any team in any World Cup semifinal in the past !

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 10:16 GMT)

Totally agreed with Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (March 24, 2014, 9:47 GMT). Both Pak and Aus have their matches in the last and ind will finish its before. Pak against WI and AUs against BD to ensure to just cross the indian's NRR. Poor captaincy and chasing from ind BUT it all depends upon Pak's win over WI and AUs's WIn over ind which is quite possible.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 10:11 GMT)

Yuvraj should find his form against Bangladesh. He needs to fire for some quick runs that india will definitely need

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (March 24, 2014, 9:47 GMT)

MSD:- Here is my analysis and NRR problem might effect India for the below scenario.

Team1: India wins: Pak,WI,Bangladesh - Losing to Aus by big margin - 6 pts Team2: Pak wins against: Aus,WI,Bangladesh - Lost to India already - 6 pts Team3: Aus wins against: WI, India, Bangladesh - Lost to Pak already - 6 pts

If India looses to Aus in a big margin, then definitely India makes a way to Aus and Pakistan.

Shame on Yuvi for not trying to improve NRR but for playing to improve his batting.

Dhoni saying "looking at present not to think about NRR now" has surprised me a lot.

If you get a chance , you have to grab with both the hands, that has not done yesterday at all by India.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 9:46 GMT)

Its time to drop Yuvi and bring in Binny. So that we can play with 11 players from next match onwards. As we have more options in bowling too...

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 9:35 GMT)

Raina should go at 4, Dhoni at 5, maybe Abhishek Nayar or Stuart Binny or some other allrounder at 6.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 9:03 GMT)

@Munroz : same was said in CT13 where.dhoni lost toss and batted first and the end result is all we know... seriously to tell you toss has nothing to do with match result

Posted by SURYA.K.R on (March 24, 2014, 8:52 GMT)

Where was this Bhuvi in SA and NZ. He was phenomenol yesterday. Hope he continues the same way against aussies. Amit Mishra justifying his position in the side after warming the benches for a fairly long time.

I still think that only when india beat any team batting first, they have a good chance of winning the 2nd title Good luck india

Posted by MelbourneMiracle on (March 24, 2014, 8:40 GMT)

Very well played India and they deserve a spot in semis for the way they have played so far. There's no possibility of Ind meeting SL in the semis since both team would probably be the table tops therefore there's no guarantee that they will meet each other in the finals either since India might get knocked off by SA or NZ in the semis. It is more likely SL vs Pak or SL vs Aus affair in the finals. All the v.best to all the teams!!

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 8:20 GMT)

@MunroZ- Toss doesn't dictate a game, skills and temperament do..

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 8:18 GMT)

I am a big of Yuvi for a long not because of his batting or bowling only because of his attitude of blasting the opposition whoever it might be..

But very much disappointed seeing his yesterdays performance dropping an easy catch of Gayle and playing 18 balls to score 10 runs in a t20 match. It seemed like if he was not out on last over it would have cost us a match coz he was keep on trying to score just a single and not willing to hit the winning boundary what everybody else will do in that situation.

That shows how much he is trying to save his wicket to improve his personal aggregate if he is continuing this we wont see yuvi again after this t20 and RCB yet again made a big mistake of taking yuvi for 14 crores. Now mallya would be crying locking his door seeing the past 2 match performances of yuvi..

Posted by Bong_Amit on (March 24, 2014, 8:15 GMT)

I'm happy to see India's performance but what was Yuvi doing in the game? 19 balls 10 Runs and ridiculous batting. Im agreeing that he is one of the Champs in shorter version of game but this is world cup and simply we can not afford this kind of playing. He is loosing catch, misfielding, awful bowling and miserable batting. Looking him any one can tell he is not a match fit. Please review his position after Bangladesh match.

Posted by Kashi0127 on (March 24, 2014, 7:57 GMT)

Its time to drop Yuvraj ...its agonizing to see him struggle. Any event this ois not doing any good to his confidence either. Bring in Bunny so that there is variety in bowling too.

Posted by MunroZ on (March 24, 2014, 7:53 GMT)

Lets see How well India Copes up if dey lose d Toss. I feel hat The man Of The match should have gone to bhuvneshwar kumar for his excellent spell ..

Posted by NP_NY on (March 24, 2014, 7:48 GMT)

The strongest batting line up in the world has won 2 out of 2, purely because of the bowling. This is an ominous sign for the other teams. Go India!

Posted by Night_Fury on (March 24, 2014, 7:43 GMT)

Their are many fans here including we Indians who are i think jumping the gun. Even after 2 wins people need topics to bash India and they got NRR and Yuvi. I see our NRR is 0.36 around, and AUS is -0.8. Seems a big difference. Now BD was beaten black and blue so how someone thinks BD will win against India is beyond me. To me BD will not win a single match. There best bet is agianst WI, in case WI continues to play like this. My top bet is India will go through and it would be touch and go between AUS and PAK.

Question: Why Ashwin field in slips?

Answer: There are three possible answers. Choose one:

1. That is the only place you can hide his poor running capability as a fielder.

2. We could not get Kelly Brooks to field in slips. Even England could not get her to do that!

3. Among the current players playing for India, he is relatively better to field in slips.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 7:31 GMT)

@amitpanchkula-They know better than all of us that's why they are playing on the field for the country and we are commenting here in this forum.. If India wins all there matches then you won't have any problem and will start praising India on how good they batted and bowled and fielded.. Man, this is depressing..I say India will win all their matches and will cruise past every other team in this group to semis.. But only a true fan would have that confidence to say that and not a critic.. #Bleed blue

@Herath-UK: As India won the two matches the number of Srilankans in the forum are getting lesser and lesser at least you are here to comment.Hopefully since only Malinga and Thissara are only playing IPL you will not be having that excuse when Srilankan Players will not perform against India LOL

Facing the ball on slow pitches is easier on fast pitches ? Grow up Eng, Aus, RSA, Nz.. Learn the art and then shout. Job well done by Ind, only concern is Yuvi's form, he is looking completely out of touch and he is moving to the back foot in anticipation of short balls. Going by his reputation of big match player need to be in shape in the next couple of games and then the knock outs.

Posted by anoop3301 on (March 24, 2014, 7:24 GMT)

@Herath-UK: Partially agree with you that warm up matches only matter to some extent. But you are conveniently forgetting that Dhoni did not bat in the warm up match against SL. This has given people like you false confidence that India can be rolled over by SL. Only time will tell whether the no.1 T20 ranking is a fluke or not.

Posted by Fast_Track_Bully on (March 24, 2014, 7:19 GMT)

@Herath-UK. You dreamed a WI win, isn't it? India played good cricket and WI played badly. thats the reason. Hope you will have the same doubts whenever SL losts to India too. :P

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 7:19 GMT)

Amit Panchkula - India did not bat poorly. They batted slowly. There is a vast difference. They won the match by 7 wickets (which really should have been 8 wickets had Yuvi not lost his wicket with just one run to make) which is a comprehensive win by any stretch of imagination.

@Hearth UK : oh really... how about Lankan full team winning against INDIA B team with out dhoni raina and uv in Asia cup??? and yeah again in warm up match Lanka won against India where dhoni did not play.... and Lanka win against saffas who were played with.out faf du plessis and half fit styne.... that makes Lankan wins nothing to boost of...

Posted by amitpanchkula on (March 24, 2014, 6:56 GMT)

india batted very poorlyi cannot understand that team management and captain did not take into account run rate, one loss can elminate india from the competetion you can see that ireland were knocked out of tournament with one loss against neitherland india must have finished the target in 16 overs or less this is a very big mistake and can prove costly supoose india, pakistan and aus end up on 3 wins each than net run rate will be taken into consideration .in 2012 world t20 india were knocked out on basis of N.R.R .This is very bad on the part of coach ,captain and team management .

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 6:53 GMT)

I'm not sure why SL fans make it a point to comment on India matches. We have defeated SL in every world event in the last few years including WC final and Champions Trophy SF. Not sure what their false bravado is all about. They haven't won anything of importance since 1996 WC and no test series victory outside Subcontinent since 2000. Calling India flat track bully and what not is very rich considering their mediocre test record and perennial choking record in all global tournaments. SL fans, grow up and see the writing on the wall in the post sanga/Mahela era. You just won one Asia cup, please keep things in perspective....

Posted by RibhavBansal on (March 24, 2014, 6:50 GMT)

In both the matches, Raina hit a boundary off the last ball to win the match with 1 run required but still only a solitary run was given twice instead of the boundary. Has anyone noticed this?

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 6:43 GMT)

Dear friends this is the fact of warm up games. Pakistan were bowled out on just 70 runs against SA. But they posted huge total of 191 in main match and against top team. Dhavan / Rohit failed in warm up matches posted opening stand of 54 runs in main match against Pak. Rohit failed to hit single boundry in warm up matches, performed very nice in both main matches so far. SA on higher confidence level after bowling out big team Pak in warm up matches, lost against Sri Lanka in main draw. Same story was at last years Champions Trophy too. Rohit failed badly in warm up matches alongwith Dhavan. But everybody knows what mejor role they played in winning CT. So friends have patience. About Yuvraj, I am still confident he will blast at right time. He is a match winner. He need onky few balls to get going. I am sure Dhoni will continue with him only. Bringing Rahane in place of Yuvraj mag proove big big risk as Rahane is not a big hitter like Yuvraj. No point in putting pressure on Rahane

Posted by swingstowin on (March 24, 2014, 6:38 GMT)

Well well! Alot has been said about the Indian bowling but it seems like they have the most complete bowling attack in this tournament. Just as in the champions trophy last year, India out of no where has become the team to beat. Who cares about the NRR when you are winning? So far favorites to win the title. Respect from Pakistan.

Posted by Herath-UK on (March 24, 2014, 6:34 GMT)

Some indian fans are taking Sri Lanka's loss to WI as significant but then forget that india lost to Sri Lanka in the warm up match. In the WI game both Malinga & Sachitra did not play. Warm up games do not matter. However WI IPL stars did not play to their true potential against india for whatever reason, so the indian win is just facile.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 6:26 GMT)

Great for India that they have one feet in the semis already, well almost, but Sidharth 'comprehensive win' seriously? You call a win that only came when there were 3 balls remaining a comprehensive win then I don't know what do you call a win that comes with 30 balls to spare? Whatever, the result matters and that shows India had the final laugh. But having said that India still need to work on their battings, yes you read it correct on batting. How often you will see batting being India's weak link but thanks to brilliant dispaly from the bowlers in both the games. Would be interesting to see the battle of rampant (wrote it delibarately, no pun inteneded) India and wounded Australia.

Its glad to see that now Dhoni is considering the players who were sitting in reserve bench. Hope there wont be any favoratism in Indian team any more. Amit Mishra is showing aggressive cricket. Selectors need to rethink about Awshin or Mishra ?

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 6:26 GMT)

actually karnamgiridhar buvi got swing in SA the problem was he was not getting his line and length right because there is extra bounce u need to bowl a little fuller to get a nick but buvi puched it bk that was the problem the other thing was he is not bowling his signature inswing even in this match ther was only two inswingers if he mixes both out and inswing he will be a dangerous bowler at the start... he needs to do the mix like he did in england.. he will go for runs by dng so but at the end he will pick two wickets

West Indies played very poorly in this match and India waited till the last over to win the match. What a pity. West Indies will be the same West Indies like they always do if they don't get their performance right.

Posted by ApurvDanke on (March 24, 2014, 6:15 GMT)

I dont like the format of the "Super 10". In each group there are 5 teams, and there is a high probability that the teams that make it to semi finals could be decided on NRR. But having 5 teams means that all teams cannot play their last match on the same day at the same time. The current format gives an advantage to the teams playing their matches last, as they know how many overs they have to reach their target/how many runs they need to restrict the opposition to, in order to qualify. If you compare with major football tournaments, like FIFA WC or Euro Championships, they have groups of 4 teams, and all teams start their final match at the same time. ICC should also look to implement the same in future tournaments.

@ bouncer709 - Thrown in a couple more "if"s while you are at it. BD will win if they score 1 run more than India. Australia will also win if they score 1 run more than India. OMG !!! India is in so much trouble !!!

Posted by Fast_Track_Bully on (March 24, 2014, 6:10 GMT)

@ bouncer709. If much more professional team cannot cross 130 against India then how come BD who lost to associates? And do not think that Indian batmen will end after Kohli. there is biggest of all Dhoni still waiting there and Jadeja and Aswin who will be enough against BD bowlers. Forget about Australia who do not have a good spinner for these tracks.

@ electric_loco_WAP4 :- You are joking right?? Dude am very much impressed with ur sense of humor, why don't u try ur hand at stand up comedy?? how in the world could u think that a team which gets thrashed by teams like Hong Kong and Afghanistan will beat MIGHTY INDIANS, whom u have managed to defeat only twice or thrice in last 15 yrs or so..or u r actually dreaming of winning the World Cup? Obviously u should, as u have defeated Pakistan 2-3 times, Australia ONCE, England may be 2-3 times, Sri Lanka again 2-3 times, South Africa (u could surely thrash them) and all other teams are nothing in front of ur sensational team...

lol..my sense of humor is also good

Posted by sudhan1234 on (March 24, 2014, 6:09 GMT)

A bit disappointed with the match. First how easily West Indies conceded the match. Was expecting some tough score for India. And secondly why India pushed it till last over. Could have comfortably finished of a bit earlier and improved on the NRR which might come handy at the end stage of the qualifier.

still not sure if it was Mishra's brilliance or fragile day for WI. Very ordinary, seems like street cricket players who suddenly found themselves in the ring. Awkward that every indian bowler dominated which is not rare against Pak first then WI.

Some of the other nation fans like SL is taking advantage of self criticizing comments by Indian fans. They should understand that Indian fans accept the truth unlike Sl fans who sits on top of the floor knowing their base is build upon rubber tubes. Indian fans are expecting the best Indian cricket which is still lacking through they are winning matches. It doesn't mean that Indians are playing bad cricket. SL fans should understand that they were washed out by WI in warm up game and the same WI scored just 129 runs against India. They had 66 dot balls, Gayle was just 34 runs when 13th overs completed of a T20 match which is highly impossible. They were clue less against Indian spin. Every one including commentators are saying group 2 is a group of death. Group 1 is not even having at least 1 more Asian country apart from SL. How lucky SL are as always. They definitely come to Semis as there is no competition to them. Bangladesh would have come to semis for sure if they are in Group1.

I see many people saying that since the batsmen crossed before ball reached the boundary. But observe that Rohit did not reach the other end of the crease. So how did India win by scoring '1' run of the last ball played without Rohit Sharma completing the run?

Love to see depressed Indian fans, who still think they might lose match against BD, and no doubt against Austrailia... fact is that before WT20 they were saying in Asia cup, they had B team, now we saw how Yuvraj and Shekhar dhawan are playing... Rohit Sharma and Raina played couple of good knocks but I tell you they are also fragile, they played with no pressure on them to chase big target... If BD post 160 runs on the board, all they need to get Kohli out early and they will win the game...Against Austrailia , India have no chance they will be loosing with big margin....

Hope all remember Sourav Ganguly's comment when Indian Team was selected for T20 WC this time. He said, Dhoni is selecting players he likes and Amith Mishra is an ordinary bowler and Harbhajan should have been selected. Ganguly himself talks as if he was the captain of captains. He wants Dhoni to be sacked just to keep his records in the books. All should accept the captaincy capability of Dhoni and also his contribution with the bat when ever the team needs. How can someone ignore his heroic innings in the final to give india the world cup.

Why does Indian batting looked subdued in spite of last world t20 were they lost one match and were out of the tournament they should have had windes and pak with at least 15 balls remaining. This could hurt India in days to come when the run-rate comes in the picture to make it ot the semis.

@electic_loco- India wanted to win comfortably.. The first match was won by 7 wickets and the next one too by 7 wickets..What does that tell abt pakistan and west indies bowling attack? They just cudn't bowl out India even with all star bowlers in their line-up.. This is exceptional batting.. At the end of the day only the win matters and nothing else.. Dude, get a life, be calm and watch India lifting another world trophy..

whats with many fans either indian or non indian complaining about nrr and saying india struggled at chase.I dont know which match you guys saw but india definitely didnt struggle at any point a win by 7 wickets and scoring at almost 8 runs an over for the first 15 overs isnt struggling by any means.Apart from that uv was tried to gwt some ball on bat it didnt work so rate slowed a bit which isnt whole team's fault. If you guys saw the same match then you are just complaining for the sake of complaint and need to improve your cricketing knowledge.

My Dear DHONI - I am not impressed the way YUVARAJ played on yesterday with WI. I don't know what happened to him, he want to make you down by playing an irresponsible innings. Beware of Yuvaraj, his attitude is not good. Kindly replace someone on that place, Its good for indian team. Try Binny in place of Shikar, because we need a hitter on that place. Next matches will be more important to us. DHONI Please think. Jai Hind !!!

Posted by Mindhunter84 on (March 24, 2014, 4:53 GMT)

The question of investigating the match between Ind and WI comes from the attitude shown by the WI batsmen through out the 20 overs. It was not because of the bowling but it seemed intentional. In case of SA vs Sri Lanka match, you need to watch how well the Lankans bowled those last 3 overs. For the PAK vs AUS match, we all know how well PAK bowlers can do in the death overs. A match can change in 5-10 overs but a match cannot go in same tempo for 20 overs!! This IND vs WI match was so predictable that after the first 5 overs I could exactly foretell the fate of this IND vs WI match. India did not go for the NRR only to return the favour shown by the WI batsmen! To summarize this was a frustratingly predictable match that promised much much more, something far different.

Posted by caldruid on (March 24, 2014, 4:50 GMT)

Why is Yuvraj still in the side ? He didn't do well when Aus/WI were in India. And he still isnt playing well. He drops catches, bats badly and doesnt bowl all that well. How many more games ?

Posted by caldruid on (March 24, 2014, 4:46 GMT)

Get a life guys. India has won both the matches where they werent given much of a chance. What do you say about that? Still cribbing about run rate and stuff. Do you think Indians deserve a place in SF if they lose to Bangladesh or if they lose badly to Australians? Enjoy the moment, we have beaten the world champions and one of the most talented side in the world. Stop thinking too much into the future. Live in the present and make the most of it.

Hey guys, West Indies lost to both Australia and Sri Lanka in the last world 20/20 and came back and beat every one. This is the team to believe in! Smith did not have a good game and should of out in the first over, 29 balls for 11 runs was giving away the game. Sammy and the coach should of tell him to go for the slog.

The most depressing aspect of Indian cricket is it's fans.. Never believe in their "own" team..All this talk abt nrr is really screwing my mind for sometime..Why the hell do you think India will lose to bangladesh? And why do you think this australian team have firepower to beat India in these conditions? I think the SL fans are the most optimistic lot but that's crazy optimism.. We don't want that optimism but atleast believe in ur team, stick with it through good and bad phases.. And support Yuvi, Rahane can't match his class even in his wildest dreams.. Yuvi will come back to form firing all cylinders against aussies(his fav. opposition).. Just be happy and support India and not demoralise..

malepas@ what do you mean to say. Each team has the chance to win toss.So what if dhoni wins is it an issue. You said if India batted first it should have been a different story. What about Pak when they batted against so called brilliant bowling side of AUS. They scored 194. Have they struggled. I don't think so. Don't try to bring down the performance of Ind/Pak.Accept if they had played well.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 4:01 GMT)

In one of the next two matches, India should play Binny in place of Shikar or Yuvraj. Right now Rohit, Kohli, Raina seem in good nick. India is able to play with 3 spinners and 2 medium fast men. Dhoni, Jadeja and Aswin are yet to be tested while batting. So it is a matter of yuvi and shikar not contributing. So Rahane can be played as opener or Binny can come in later. This is important if India gets into the next rounds, other teams will know that India is playing so many spinners and try to work out a strategy. So some change is needed. Moreover, MSD must have a plan B and not just rely on spinners. Also give those not in form a break (or if they win the next match, experiment in the last match).

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 3:55 GMT)

I just get a feeling this could be the last t-20 wc for dhoni.... he may just retire.... sanju Samson would be the the ideal choice if at all he retires.... rohit as captain....

Posted by mysecretme on (March 24, 2014, 3:54 GMT)

Lay off Yuvraj! His only problem is that he is not going for the straight bat shots for some reason and playing across the line. Once he plays himself in by forcing the ball straight down the ground, he will be back to the match winner he is. He was doing alright in this match when the artificial stress of the final over got to him. There is nothing to worry about there.

Posted by sergio11 on (March 24, 2014, 3:54 GMT)

Good win..but batting look so weak..Yuvi must be replaced with Binny, which will enable Raina and Dhoni to bat up the order...Shikar deserves few more chance..and both games it was the bowling the rescused ind...we have seen in IPL,if someone start to counter attack bowlers like Mishra and Jaddu they tend to become a little shaky..Jaddu showed it yesterday..so game against AUS will be very crucial..they wil surely counter..

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 3:54 GMT)

Excellent work by the bowlers against a strong team like WI who are a house full of power hitters. Kumar should be the rightful candidate for MOM, MSD should consider dropping Dhawan and play Rahane as opener and Rayudu in place of Yuvi.

Posted by ankilien on (March 24, 2014, 3:32 GMT)

Yuvi deserves a longer run, he has earned it and we all know what can he do on his day. He is 32 and most batsmen peak at this age. He has served Indian cricket so well, its time that we supporters of Indian cricket back him up and give him much needed confidence. Dhoni believes in him and i am pretty sure that Yuvi is going to be back to his best.

B. Kumar basically bowled only two balls of those 3 overs to Gayle. He bowled to smith who was unable to play and all of a sudden Kumar is being reported as best bowler... typical indian media

The way Gayle batted and got out was in this match is questionable. Yes India bowled well with some assistance from the conditions but still it was not that deadly for those explosive West Indian batsmen. Can the authority run an investigation in this match?

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (March 24, 2014, 3:12 GMT)

Is it a comfortable win? I don't think so. From now on we should change the meaning of comfortable win. It should be " A win with at least 3 overs to spare and some wickets in hand" What will happen if India looses with high margin to Aus? and we never know about Bangladesh match as well. Send Rahane opener and push Rohit to middle order at Yuvi's place and that enables to play Dhawan his natural game along with Rahane. or at least if Dhoni doesn't want to change opening slot then bring Rayudu. Rayudu always performed well, and better than Rahane but no one talks about him unfortunately. Lazy Rohit is first time looking like he is giving value to his wicket. We should hope that his attitude remains the same through out the tournament.

Posted by cricket_ahan on (March 24, 2014, 2:57 GMT)

@Mannu42: agree on the comment about Yuvraj being a weak link. Unfortunately I don't agree with your comment re: his continued inclusion in the team. When tournaments are on the line (or even otherwise), you always need to field your best team, and Yuvraj (bar one amazing T20 innings against Aust) has not looked the goods after his international return. He has played enough limited overs cricket to test his place in the side, and unfortunately has not delivered. Rahane or Rayadu should be played instead - Rahane will be a better asset in the field as well.

shikar dhawan needs to learn that you cant argue with umpires on the field, if you do so make sure you hit every ball witht he bat, if you fail to put bat to ball, then you will be given out no matter if it is out or not.... this applies for every other team players , not only indians....... come one guys that was pitched outside leg and hit outside leg... even my girlfreind can tell that as not out in real time....

When Dhoni says,"we all know what Rohit Sharma is capable of" was he referring to his capability of leaving a full length ball pitching on middle and taking the middle of middle stump in Durban ? Total runs less than Steyn in SA tour ?Or was it this breathtaking innings of 60 off 50 balls which brought down our NRR ? or was it his streak of innings with 50 strike rate ?

@ yuvistrong12 sorry to disappoint you but I think Yuvi is done. He is selected on basis of his history in T20 and not on his current form + the fact that he is highest paid IPL player (really overtly overrated). He is no longer the match winner as he use to in 2007 and perhaps seems to be under pressure playing under the shadows of young guns (read match winners) such as Rohit, Virat, Shikar, etc. I hope Dhoni gives Rahane a chance in this tournament. I suspect it wont happen. From his on field behavior it seems he is not enjoying the games, is awfully self absorbed by not mixing in with the players and has gone back in his own shell. We have seen that happen before and I dont believe he will comeback in this tournament. Yuvi - its time you have a reality check and please practice taking catches. I am an indian fan and I want the best for team India - nothing personal :).

raina completed the run before the ball crossed the rope, as the completed run finishes the match so the boundary wont taken into calculation. one more example SL gimmick to bowl a no-ball to stop Sehwag's ceuntury

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 1:26 GMT)

Yuvraj has started to "hurt" the team so deserves to be dropped. However, even come the World Cup 2015 in Australia, I would want to be 100% convinced that Rayudu/Binny are better options than Yuvraj given Yuvraj's experience and capability. I might be tempted to give him a slightly longer rope.

I think Bhuvneshwar should have been Man of the Match instead of Mishra. Everyone was expecting WI batsman to thrash Indian bowlers all over the ground but Bhuvi surprised them with swing and tied them in knots. That really was a game winning spell for India

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 1:12 GMT)

Yuvraj spoiled the chance for a much quicker win. This would have increased their net run rate. Yuvraj let India be 2 overs late

With Indian spinners in form and bowling well, they are serious contenders for the cup this year. Another India-Sri Lanka final is looming in the horizon!

"Post-IPL-big-bid-syndrome". It is a psychological ailment, the specific term used here is coined in the IPL context.

That seems to be the ailment Yuvi is suffering from. It happened to Yusuf Pathan. It happened to Gouti. And a few more.

In the post modernistic era, money has become the yardstick to measure one's self-worth. An unreasonably high bid creates an unreasonably high self-worth. The persons concerned try to live up to that level, which they can't. It results in failure. I had seen this happening repeatedly in corporate settings too, when some officers/ executives / managers are hired at a package far higher than what was the ideal one for the concerned persons. It is sad, but true.

Posted by wapuser on (March 24, 2014, 0:22 GMT)

Why India wait upto the last bowl, finish it man if u are in control why take chances. Run rate and bonus points always resist india in lots of tournaments. Sit yuvraj we have lots of options on bench

Posted by   on (March 24, 2014, 0:17 GMT)

@purav_cricket, the match end when the required scored. In this instances as Raina and Rohit crossed before the ball reached the boundary rope hence only one run will be taken into consideration.

Posted by whocareswhowins on (March 24, 2014, 0:11 GMT)

@Johny_129: Totally agree with your sentiments there. If India are knocked out on NRR, then all 3 of Dhoni, Rohit and Yuvraj should take the blame..India should have aimed to finish by the 15th over. Yuvraj should really be put out of his misery. The once-proud superlative fielder / batsman is a pale shadow of his former self.

@yuvistrong12 on (March 23, 2014, 18:05 GMT):

Yuvi? Phoenix from euphoria ? Rising from the ashes? Being a Yuvi fan, I wish so. But the chances look dim. Hope I am wrong. Pushing just one individual's case (just to pander to our emotions, let's be honest) at the cost of the national team's cause, will be very selfish to say the least. It will be sheer nepotism.

Moreover, ignoring guys like Pujara, Rahane (even Karthik --he messed up his cause in the Asia cup--, Uthappa , and a few more of their calibre) is injustice to so many good players. There are many more in the early 20's who are waiting for their chances. I am NOT saying that age is a dominant criterion, but if guys of the same (or even better talents) are far younger, the younger ones need to be invested in.

P.S. It is not in batting alone, Yuvi is failing, but also in fielding and bowling. The decline is a wide-based one.(Hope, he does a phoenix, my heart still whispers in my ears.. .

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (March 23, 2014, 23:47 GMT)

Toss wins and some good Indian bowling have created the cushion for fielding lapses, slower batting and Yuvraj to get back in to form. The NRR does not look good for India. One bad outing against Australia and India can easily get eliminated because this WI team will not win against either Pak or Aus.

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (March 23, 2014, 23:41 GMT)

There can easily be a 3-way tie between Aus, India and Pak. This will happen with just WI to Pak and Aus and then India losing to Aus. Definitely possible and also probable given the way Aussies and WI played y'day; the net run rate will eliminate India then.

Posted by La_Bangla on (March 23, 2014, 23:40 GMT)

@yuvistrong12- NRR has always been the issue for India, wheather its a tri-series in Australia or the last T20 WC. Just look at the histroy. A wiseman learns from the past mistakes

Posted by NIPPY_89 on (March 23, 2014, 23:32 GMT)

if West indies won by the same margin the title would read. "WI win nailbiter". Somehow a 2 ball victory is easy.

Posted by Haiderpakawsome on (March 23, 2014, 22:57 GMT)

Good win for India. From a Pak fan. But the target was relatively easier and should have been completed a few overs earlier. On SL-SA match, not sure if anyone noticed. The wicket of de Kock was clearly a throw ball, over 4.3. Dont understand why it wasnt raised. It cost the game to poor SA.

Posted by Nick_sp on (March 23, 2014, 22:50 GMT)

India took nearly 7 overs to score last 29 runs. NRR comes into play if three teams win 3 matches each. They should have easily scored those runs within 17 overs, that would have put them in commanding position.

Posted by kr_kinshuk on (March 23, 2014, 22:41 GMT)

Not to mention the dropped catches. India were lucky to get away with those drops. Another day, and Gayle would have made them really pay for them.

I hope they don't drop a game - changer in the coming games. 'coz they r looking good at the moment.

Makes you realize that raina might have made a crucial difference on these sub - continent tracks in the Asia cup as well.

Posted by kr_kinshuk on (March 23, 2014, 22:35 GMT)

First and foremost, I'm glad that India have managed to pull off those two wins on the back of some surprisingly good performances with the ball. However, at the risk of repeating what's already been said quite tonight, I do feel that India missed an opportunity to get some valuable Net Run Rate advantage.

The t20 format is very unpredictable. Two back - to - back low scores to chase are a rare occurrence. A couple of bad overs and India could well end up in a Net Run Rate situation. And this won't be the first time this would have happened.

I've no problems with the fact that Yuvraj has been picked. But it was a mistake sending him in when there was little to gain. It's a misconception that runs scored in such easier situations help a player regain form.

If you get runs, they don't really change much in terms of your form. But if you struggle and get out (the way Yuvraj did) it only adds pressure on you. Somewhat like being asked to bat a few minutes before a break in a test match.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 22:13 GMT)

Its time to Yuvraj to sit and Rahane should get the chance in playing 11, I really admire Yuvi but if he is out of form let the other player get in

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 22:07 GMT)

The reason why Raina's shot is only counted as a single is because the batsmen completed the run before the ball crossed the boundary.

Posted by OttawaRocks on (March 23, 2014, 22:02 GMT)

Strategy time. It is possible that India lose both their remaining games. If so, India is likely out (although that would depend on run rate if the entire division goes 2-2). If India goes 3-1 then it is possible that 2 of the remaining teams still manage to go 3-1 as well, forcing NRR to decide India's advancement possibilities. Therefore, if India can blowout one of their opponents and avoid a blowout loss in the other one, they should be good to advance.

Posted by KrikIndFan on (March 23, 2014, 21:59 GMT)

Just when you thought India's a poor bowling side, they win both matches on their shoulders. Luckily for both opposition who should be thanking the Indian bowlers who didn't allow them to score a big total since doing so might have resulted to force India to bring out their nuclear weapon called "MS DHONI" with a bat.

Posted by kahvas on (March 23, 2014, 21:50 GMT)

Its astonishing how people, especially Indian fans are talking about Yuvi. Yuvi has been India's biggest matchwinner, especially while chasing. Look at his stats throughout his career especially in pressure situations. Even your god took 140 balls to get to his landmark which we lost to BD. Everyone was happy about a selfish 100th 100 despite losing badly to a 9th ranked team. Yuvi is a matchwinner, please give him some time. Many fans including me wanted Jadeja out, and he was given many chances, but have to agree he is a match winner. Everyone gets chances, why not yuvi.

I am not sure India will come for finals . bcos they should have won as faster as they can . If India would lost to Australia with big margin and Australia and Pakistan keep their winning momentum . India out of the box . I don't know why Smith stuck to score runs . even these days every batsman hit over buneshwar but WI stuck . he is not good pacer . he is not talented as what indian Team think

@Amit Jain..dear do you know the meaning of flat track....India won the Champions trophy in 2013 in England, winner of tri-series in WI in 2013, winner of CB series in Australia in 2012, winner of 2007 T20 world cup in SA, runner up in 2003 World cup in SA....are they flat tracks?

Posted by malepas on (March 23, 2014, 21:25 GMT)

Good win but I'm not convinced India is the best team out there, I think, Dhoni has been very lucky with tosses so far, there is distinct swing and spin happening between 7.30pm & 8.45pm, in which Indian pacers and spin bowlers are getting lots of seam and spin and this gets disappeared once the atmosphere gets heavy and ball start to come on bat nicely,, I would like to see how India would play if they lose toss they have to bat first, then we will see the real picture. Today's difference in afternoon and evening match was striking, Pak batting struggle the other day batting first as well, so this is not a co-incident. Mark my word guys, this is a major factor behind India's wins so far, not taking anything away from them.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 21:01 GMT)

Only one run was considered because India needed just one run and they completed the run before the ball reached the boundary. Once they do that the game is over. If they hadnt completed the run and had the ball gone past the fence it would have been a four.

Posted by vivek_us on (March 23, 2014, 20:51 GMT)

The reason you only see one run for Riana is that the batsmen crossed over before the ball reached the boundary, and as soon as they did that, the game was over.

It's time for Yuvraj to fade away into the distance, and let someone else have a chance to contribute something meaningful!

Posted by Herath-UK on (March 23, 2014, 20:45 GMT)

A boring game compared to others so far, wondered why WI stars most of them in the IPL struggled against the indian spinners who are not new to them. Did not see a fighting spirit in the WI camp.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 20:43 GMT)

Imagine what would have happened if the umpire did not put up his hand for Dhawan, the game would have finished earlier. (wrong call anyway)

None of the WI bowlers bowled as if they were defending a small score. Imagine what Pakistan and Australia will do with them. Poor Bangladesh will be crucified, then we will see WI joining the next flight.

And this is the best WI team ever, since slice bread.

Posted by Desiboi80 on (March 23, 2014, 20:42 GMT)

@ geevee97 - Have you noticed Yuvi's body language in the outfield? He jogs after a ball on boundary lines. He is not able to sight the ball for catches and while batting today he wasn't sure most of the time where he has hit the ball. It feels like his illness still has some after effects that is bothering his eye sight or his brain. He just doesn't give a vibe of a fit player. Dhawan on the other hand is a good player for Test and One-day and his game has been messed up by slow Rohit Sharma in one-day games. Not so sure about him in T20 but with his fielding today he saved at least 8-10 runs in a low scoring game.

Posted by bobjinder on (March 23, 2014, 20:32 GMT)

Why are people comparing yuvi with rahane. Rahane flopped in both the practice games unlike yuvi and in the last five official t20s India played yuvi has been the man of the match so chill he will be back

Sometimes a team fail to proceed to the next round because of low run-rate. If that happens to India, they will probably look back at this match and think of inventing a time machine!

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 20:07 GMT)

@purav_cricket, If you complete the winning run before the ball reached the boundary line then it is counted as one run. The match end as soon as the winning run is completed. That is why in that case boundary is not counted. Remember the Sahwag's 6 was not counted when he was on 94 and India needed only one run to win. The Srilankan bowler bowled a no ball and the match finished instantaneously and 6 was not counted. Indian batsmen should have waited the ball to cross the boundary instead of completing the run.

Posted by R_U_4_REAL_NICK on (March 23, 2014, 19:59 GMT)

I wouldn't call a win by 2 balls an "easy" one; after such a wonderful performance by the Indian bowlers, their batsmen almost made a real hash of the chase.

More than Yuvi or NRR, I am most disappointed by the attitude of Indian fans on this forum and even during the commentary. I really think that we Indian fans are the worst supporters out there (when compared to other countries) and sports in general. We can never be happy, we cannot be happy that this team has beaten two pre-tournament favorites now we are worried about a 1000 run defeat by Australia. Yes it happened the last time so what??? That way no team should have come to play the 83 WC as the WI had won the last two WC's. Just enjoy the victories and regardless of what the fans of other countries say (including some Indians) they was no doubt after the first five overs were bowled in both matches that India was going to win...... So chill and enjoy the performance and hope we can lift the cup. Cheers

It is very hard to see Yuvi struggle like this. He is missing catches, he doesn't bowl anymore and his batting is very tentative. India's trump card in T20s has become it's liability. Rahane really deserves a chance in the 11. Otherwise, really pleased to see the Indian bowling clicking finally. Restricting the opposition to under 130 in two consecutive T20 matches is no easy task. Well done Mishy and India!

It looks like a joke when you read :Sammy throws India a gauntlet for hitting! WI were well & truly beaten by 7 wickets. Even in the hitting department India out hit WI by 11 to 9 in boundaries +were 3 Sixers vs. 4 of WI. But India out bowled WI in the spin department. Badree got Dhawan LBW which clearly showed in slow motion that the ball pitched outside the wkt. range & was missing the Leg stump. So it was a charity wkt. for the spinner. It was strange seeing Sammy bowling with funniest combo of bowlers- 2 of them never heard of before. Had India caught Gayle at 0 or at 19, WI might have been dismissed for <100. So much for the gauntlet! Now WI have to fight to stay alive in their group with 3 teams tied at 1 Win. Only sad part today for India was from 74 for 1 in 9 overs, India took another 11 overs to get 55 runs. Why didn't they finish the game fast with higher run rate to give them a big edge should there be a Tie with other team with 2 matches remaining? India has to beat BD.

India will be in the finals. Its the batting which has been highlighted every time, but whenever they dominate in bowling they end up there. Particularly impressed with the way Bhuvi was moving the ball around. Seemed for so many matches that he had lost his swing. Mishra was amazing. Yuvi needs to watch replays of his 2007 worldt20 and 2011wc achievements. Down on confidence but I'm sure its the semi final or the final where he will come good. He is a big match player.

Yuvraj, is a great player no doubt but what is doing? Yuvraj needs to be dropped. Can't Catch, Can't Bowl, Can't Bat, so why are you in the team. My Grandma would have contributed better in this match.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 18:49 GMT)

What's wrong with our man Yuvi? Can't quite get it. It's true that he's been out of form in his couple of comebacks. But the sad part is his inability to forget the game before and arrive afresh, in a new game, with a positive mentality. His confidence seems to be shattered. He's too scared to express himself. He's neither expressing himself on the field while fielding nor while batting.

Why don't you SMASH your way out of the rut you're in? Be your old flamboyant self. Have fun, like you did in the past, on the field. Doesn't matter if this's going to be your last tournament...go out with a fight. At least look like you're the man, you used to be. GOOD LUCK!

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 18:47 GMT)

Good win by India. I think Dhoni is missing a trick here. Why don't he emphasized on Run rate because T20 is an uncertain format of cricket & I am sure that Aussies or even Bengalis may give them a tough fight. If India loose one of the last 2 games, & if Pakistan & Australia win their rest of the games then it will be decided on NRR. So target like 130 should have to be achieved within 16 overs. It might not go to final over when you have 7 wickets in your pocket & you have Dhoni, Yuvi & Jadeja the pinch hitters.

Posted by anupkeni on (March 23, 2014, 18:47 GMT)

It is a known fact that in ICC tournaments India has a habit of faltering against Australia just as Pakistan has a habit of faltering against India. However it must be said that India got the better of Australia in the 2007 World Twenty20 semi-final and the 2011 World Cup quarter-final. In the last two editions of the World Twenty20 India had lost to Australia by 49 runs in West Indies in 2010 and by 9 wickets with 31 balls remaining in Sri Lanka in 2012. In both those tournaments India's chances of qualifying for the semi-final were virtually over after getting hammered by Australia. The memories of David Warner and Shane Watson hammering Jadeja in 2010 and Ashwin in 2012 would still rankle many Indian fans. So India will need a massive win in their next match against Bangladesh to compensate for a potential massive loss against Australia. This will keep India's net run rate above Australia, West Indies and Pakistan and ensure India a spot in the semi-finals.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 18:47 GMT)

Guys, Before the ball could reach the boundary the batsmen crossed, thus Raina was awarded only one run.

Posted by AnoMaLy on (March 23, 2014, 18:47 GMT)

Good win by Ind. Yuvi clearly is really low in confidence and batting form. At this level this kind of performance is unacceptable and India should take corrective measures asap. Seeing that India has very limited options Rahane should be brought in place of Yuvi. India should also look at resting Dhawan for the next match. Maybe open with Rahane, promote Raina at 4 and pick binny to bat after MS. Binny could be handy with his nagging medium throws.

Does anyone know why the stadium started emptying some 45 minutes before the end? Was it the inevitability of the result or was there a short rain break? I only caught the WI innings the last half an hour or so of the match.

Posted by Collegefastbowler on (March 23, 2014, 18:45 GMT)

Replace Yuvraj Singh with Rahane. Past laurels can carry you only so far and Rahane is the batsman in form. Yuvraj is clearly past his best. Replace Kumar with Varun Aaron. Kumar is not swinging the ball as he used to and Aaron's extra pace would be helpful if he can get his accuracy right.

As a West Indian is have to say it was a good performance by the Indians. Some the troubles WI faced were self-inflicted. Smith and Samuels need to do a lot better. For all his IPL experience it was shocking to see Smith struggle like that. He seemed tentative and somewhat nervous against the spinners. Samuels has got to realize that an early wicket means he is virtually an opener therefore he needs to attack i.e. he has little time to settle. I can't believe he ran out Gayle knowing he was just coming from recent knee and hamstring injuries. The single wasn't even on and once again he got himself stumped. The other batsmen can be forgiven as they had too much to do in the end. The WI bowlers did well to preserve their NRR.

Its ironic that the two favorites have lost their first matches. They will be going extra hard against the other opponents. The AUS vs WI match will virtually be quarterfinal. Best of luck to the Windies.

Similar to today's match between India and West Indies, the match between India and Pakistan was also finished by a '4' from Raina. But only '1' run is given. Is there any such rule as such that how many runs you may hit of the winning ball, only '1' run would be given? This is grossly unfair on the part of India. India is denied from a better NRR in both the matches.

For once I m not favoring yuvraj .yes he was scratchy. So other players can be. But with yuvraj we always want the best. So now I won't comment just wait and watch . I'm sure this is not the end. World cup is a still on..Lets see

India's bowlers have won both matches and not the batsmen.

Indian bowlers have also outplayed the oppositions bowlers in both matches but this will never be mentioned in the commentary

well done boys...As predicted, Windies batting is not reliable and stable as India. the Indians did their home work well and walked the talk when raina said they would capitalize on windies weakness to play lot of dot balls..Ultimately the dot balls were too much for the windies...hope they can learn from this defeat and come back strong just as pakistan did today after their loss against India...

@yuvistrong12: dude, NRR is very important. We won 4 out of 5 matches in 2012 and could not qualify for the semi-final because of a lower NRR. So its important India finish of matches quickly especially when targets are small like 130.

Posted by Seperior on (March 23, 2014, 18:29 GMT)

India will be the champion and there is no question about that. Rest of the teams can try hard to be in the Quarters, Semis and Runner up...

bring gambhir back.. he was playing well in ranji trophy... yuvi needs a serious look at hi game ... where is that killer instinct of 2011 world cup.. it's totally missing.. i m not taking anything from yuvi.. but since we r talking about indian not abt an individual's perspective then yuvi must be dropped ... backing on past history will not give anything .. and SHIKHAR DHAWAN all the bowlers have caught his wickness in his leg side so he also needs to change his game ......and when india bats first wht will happen to india though they have a small total to chase u can't play like a 50 overs match ..... n our bowlers are not gonna produce this kind of performance everyday ... ROHIT nad DHAWAN you need to buckle up ... and try to score runs in a faster rate....

India's three spinners and the part timer Raina are a blessing beyond simply bowling. They can be used by Dhoni to play different roles against differing oppositions. He has too much talent at his disposal. I can't see any team beating India comprehensively in these conditions, unless their batting collapses very badly.

WI are missing Rampaul! But who knows? Maybe added pace is a curse here.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 18:25 GMT)

That's why i believe now a days Dhoni is a best captain in world cricket in any format i am from Pakistan but huge fan of MSD and Kholi, Kholi is such a class and if his consistency remain same he surely beat century of centuries set by Sachin.. Indian bowler doing some excellent job but be aware of ausses now.

Posted by the_predator on (March 23, 2014, 18:24 GMT)

Guys dont think too much about NRR just now. To NRR to kick in AUS has to win all their matches. Pakistan has to win all matches (ind .581 pak .077). These might not happen. See Chris Gayle and other WI big hitter will not fail in every match. specially against AUS attck which is mainly pace, he can be lethal. AlsoIi dont think AUS will find indian (and BD) spinner as easy (mostly they are away going).AMIT mishre at this moment is the most threatning and potent spinner in this WT20,and that is keeping in mind saeed AJMAL.one of the reason why FINCH and MAXWELL could slog sweep so freely bcause all of their bowlers are off break, AFRIDI does not SPIN it much.CHRIS gayle and other WI bats also has equal power to hit the slog sweep but still they struggled against MISHRA becaiuse of his huge legbreaks. and ASHWIN under these pitches is very good, since he can bowl the carom ball. We could see, one ball from BABAR went away from watson and he got outside edge. it will not be easy for AUS

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 18:22 GMT)

I find it baffling to hear so many comments about the NRR. It's great to win big but cricket ain't just numbers. There is a mental part to it that is more important. In the mind of the players it was an easy win. The mental state of the players is always the most important factor in a match. Of all 1.2 billion people in the country im sure there are more players with world class skill sets in india than anywhere else but the fact is few are successful on the big stage. That brings us back to Yuvi. His skills are undeniable but he is in complete disarray at the moment. It's not just a question of form or fitness. An experienced player like yuvi making such rudimentary mistakes is very unbecoming. He needs some good mental conditioning sessions before he gets anywhere near the 22yard strip. Playing him any further will irreparably harm his self confidence. Hope someone gets to him before he falls any further. The game was a good one. WI better pick up fast. Best of luck to both teams.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 18:21 GMT)

India were around 108 in 14 overs, so it took em 5 overs to get 22 runs? Wasted opportunity to increase their nrr. The title "bowlers give India easy win" and Lankans and Indians praising each other in the forum? Wow! Who says miracles don't happen? It's good to see, guys. Best of luck to Asian trio to win the cup, hope one of you makes it there. Would say 4 to include Bd, but I'm being realistic. Sorry, bd, nothing but love for ya. :) thanks for the support, bd crowd.

The chase was messed up esp. the net run rate. God forbid if we end up loosing to Australia, we'll be cursing that we could make the best of the game with WI - and possibly get knocked out like the last world cup.

Yuvi wanted to spend some time in middle to get used to conditions - clearly the guy is out of sorts, the struggled against a fairly ineffective bowling line-up, was pathetic in the field - dropped a sitter of Gayle.

My take - drop Yuvi and bring in Binny

Easy win for India although it would have been great if they had finished the job in 16 overs. I had no doubts that WI would be no match to India on this pitch with the ground size and I had posted the reasons yesterday. With the sharp turn and big ground size, Gayle will be out of the game. Ashwin and Raina will slide the ball in with the odd ball spinning away sharply and Gayle is out of the game. CSK had used this technique a lot of times and were effective at home. Gayle though is very effective in the smaller Bangalore ground where the spin is less. Pak will use the same tactics with Hafeez bowling to Gayle and I get a feeling that Maxwell will open the bowling for Aus against WI. Although I like their team, WI have little chance of qualifying for semis as they are over reliant on Gayle and he will be out of the game in this ground.

Seriously, the Indian team should not play Yuvraj any more in this tournament. Cant bat, cant bowl, cant field and cant catch. He seemed to be having his personal net session in the middle of the match and nearly took India to defeat. If Yuvraj has any dignity left, he should himself opt out of the playing XI.

Another convincing win for team India. All credit goes to the wonderful bowling by our boys, which even managed to put shackles on Gayle and Smith. Once the target was only 130, it was all too easy for the team chasing. It was a great Captaincy by MSD, his return to our team has brought a certain calmness in our boys which has been apparent on the field. Now for this group, the Focus will be on the match between WI and Aussies on the 28th, the loosing team will most probably be out of the running. It's going for be a long break for our boys until 28th. Hope they come will all guns blazing against BD. All the best Boys. Cheers!

If Raina hit a boundary to win the match, why is it counted as one run and not four? I think the same thing happened in the last match. It's just three more runs but it makes a difference to the net run rate calculations

@Seperior: I was thinking the same thinking...that Yuvraj might be coming down with something. I hope not! But it would have given his confidence a world of good to have hit the winning runs and taken that catch to dismiss Gayle.

WI didn't show up to play. They have gotta get into the habit of rotating strike!

Posted by Nampally on (March 23, 2014, 18:05 GMT)

Congrats. to India for the second win in a row. Dhoni's emotional attachment to Yuvraj nearly cost India a Win vs. WI today! 1. Yuvraj is not a #4 Batsman 2. Yuvraj is no longer the bowler he once was 3. Even his fielding & particularly catching is poor. Yuvraj was so poor in the match vs. Pakistan that there was no justification for including him in the XI. Yet Dhoni persisted with him. Today yuvraj dropped Gayle- a "Sitter"! He came in to bat @ 107 for 2 with 5.2 overs left. He played so slowly that when he got out India were left with just 3 balls to win. Are the personal interest of Yuvraj above the National interests? Yuvraj should never be sent @#4. He is at best #7 bat now. Raina & Dhoni come ahead of him if at all he deserves to be in XI. It is unfair to Rahane, Binny & others to see "Old Boy" mentality in XI selection. Mishra was benched unfairly for about 20 matches. He showed what India missed - thru' Dhoni's illogical XI selection. Dhoni's job is to put Best XI on Field!

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas_Atheist on (March 23, 2014, 18:04 GMT)

A comfortable win in the end. We are going to handover a thrashing to the hosts. So, I don't understand this talk about NRR. Well done India. And now YS must be dropped for Rahane. Simple as that! Not worried one bit about SA, Australia and England. They need doctored pitches at home to win. They can't buy a win when they travel overseas. It has to be pure luck if they manage a win here and there.

yet another indian win...but feel vry sad for yuvi...dropped a sitter, disgusted how he got out...can't even find the gaps and take india home to victory tremendous drop in form in everything..batting, fielding..mentally & physically even getting 1 run from 6 deliveries was so tough for him. But we all know what a tough fighter YUVI is,just as he conquered cancer and came back stronger. I think Dhoni should give him one more chance again Bangladesh and see where he stands..Because INDIA needs YUVRAJ

there is a difference between class player and subcontinent hitters . those who are criticising yuvi .it takes lot of talent and courage to play in a team where half of the player dont have level to play international cricket and are only because of favourism by dhoni and n srinivason . because you know real talent will shine everywhere not in subcontinent . may some of you have amnesia and have forgot the white washes recently india had out of subcontinent.

I see in the score card that Suresh Raina has scored only 1 run of the 1 ball (19.4) he faced. But when I watched on television I saw him hitting a 4 of the ball he played. This is not fair on the part of India. Each run effects the NRR.

It is a known fact that in ICC tournaments India has a habit of faltering against Australia just as Pakistan has a habit of faltering against India. The only exceptions were 2007 World Twenty20 semi-final and 2011 World Cup quarter-final where India got the better of Australia. In the last two editions of the World Twenty20, India had lost to Australia by 49 runs in 2010 in West Indies and 9 wickets with 31 balls remaining in 2012 in Sri Lanka. Hence to compensate for a potential massive defeat against Australia, India will require an even more massive win against Bangladesh to keep their net run rate above Australia, West Indies and Pakistan to be in contention for a spot in the semi-final from group 2.

Congrats India for a win with very tight bowling, some good bating but not so good fielding.First of all ,Dhawan is not in good touch but he will come back with some performance. About Sharma or Nohit, though he comes good but real challenge will be when India will have to chase higher total. But yes , he is tallented with all shorts in his book...saw how he hit sixes in three different direction with three different shots against good Pakistan attack which even our consistant and finisher Dhoni cannnot hit like that. Just the thing is shot selection he has to chose as we saw how he got out by playing cut aginst spin and that too of Ajmal.Misra I think is going to be very good bowler coz he is wrist spin and wrist spin can turn in any conditions. For Yuvraj, sorry to say he is my favorite player, he wons us T20 nad world cup but post cancer he has lost his reflexand terribly out of touch be it feilding or batting. So considering the circumstances of Yuvraj ,,its time for Rahane .

Congrats to Team India for the win. But still there are concerns that needs to be addressed before we reach the business end of the tournament, the obvious one being Yuvraj. He looks like a pale shadow of his former self. He is not sure about himself and looks completely out of place. Lags in all 3 departments - Batting, Bowling & Fielding. He was not not even trusted to roll his arm in this match. It's a bit difficult to see a player of his calibre and record struggling for quite an extended time. Time is running out and he needs to get back to his bludgeoning best which will be good for both him & team. He should not be discarded at this time. He should have the support of the team. Dhawan too needs to spend some time at the crease. He might be on the wrong side of the judgement today, but he struggled against Pakistan too. Some sloppiness can be avoided in the fielding. At the moment India is playing very good if not great cricket. Should have an eye on NRR too, just in case...

an anyone tell me why is India (and Suresh Raina ) being docked off runs actually scored? In both matches against Pakistan and West Indies, the last shots were boundaries ( the single was not completed as I saw it) , but only 1 run was added to the score. This has impact , if only marginal, on the net run rate of the teams in the pool and I hope India does not rue this later on.I was also trying to dig a bit deeper into the math. NRR is is calculated simply on the basis of the following NRR = (Runs for/No. of overs) - (Runs against /No. of overs) Putting the numbers reported in Cricinfo , NRR for teams in Pool A should work out to be India : 0.375 , Pakistan : 0.035 , West Indies : -0.25 , Australia: -0.8 . Instead , what is reported /calculated is India : 0. 363 ,Pakistan : 0.077 , West Indies: -0.16 , Australia: -0.8 If you however account the two boundaries from Raina ,the NRR changes to Ind : 0.532 ,Pak : -0.04 ,WI : -0. 405 , Aus:-0.8.Please tell me if I am missing something.

Yuvi needs to be dropped for sure, he is simply not match fit as of now and in the first place i dont understand his selection in the 11 if its not for past history i dont see any reason he should be in the 11. Binny would be the best choice since he is in form and can bat in middle order

WI team wore a badge on their shoulders that says "confident group" was that for motivation purposes? because they entire team with the exception of Badree,Narine and Ramdin exudes the total opposite,(A LACK OF CONFIDENCE) Smith was lost against quality bowling, this is not his level of cricket i said it before,Sammy dub "THE FINISHER" fails again, also Russell and of course for this is not his level, after the first 20 overs we can clearly say that STRATEGY(BRAIN) suppressed muscles, WI should've had Sarwan,Deonarine and Barnwell in the team then this game would've had a different result, poor captaincy from Sammy helped India to victory, like Croft said "India toyed with WI today" is exactly correct, i can only feel pity for the fans that agreed with the selection of this team,HORRIBLE SELECTION,HORRIBLE COACHING,every individual need to be giving a STRATEGY for every roll that play and this is the coaches job but also the WICB have to select the better players,GIBSON SHOULD BE FIRED!!!.

India fans are talking about RR, come on guys we know you have Kohli a good player, but your other players are highly over rated, so be happy with the win, don't expect any thing extravagant from your batsmen, otherwise they will lose the match... poor yuvraj almost had lost it for India today, what a fielder he is turning to be.... any way congratulation for the win.

I am actually speechless on people gunning down Yuvi. Even so the Indians here. Are u guys out of wits comparing Yuvi to Rahane or Binny. We lost against Pak in Asia cup because Rahane played so slow. guys wake up..Playing in Ipl and playing against top teams is different. You invest and u reap rewards. Half of you wanted Jadeja to go when he was not playing. Dhoni is absolutely spot on giving Yuvi all the time. If he gets going it would be hard for any team to stop us. Can you think similarly for Rahane. And about NRR, let's think about it after we play BD. Why the hell you think we will loose to BD.

I am disappointed more than a loosing the game. I was hoping India would finish the game at least before 17th over, but just before 2 balls? what a shame. Imagine what would have happen if Narine wouldn't have bowled a no-ball which cost him total 7 runs? I am guessing Kohli got out exactly when he was thinking to raise the RR, just when Indian needed 22 runs from 32 balls. Kohli was thinking about finishing the game at least 15 balls to spare. But what happened to Yuvi ? where is 12 balls 50 runs Yuvi? I think Yuvi needs to be given rest for sure. Dropping catches, not in good form, no bowling too and more over his body language is very disappointing. India should have packed WI below 110 and should have chased within 15 overs to improve NRR. Don't understand why only 1 run when the ball was hit for 4 in the last ball? It happened against Pakistan too last ball hit for 4 by Raina and was given a single? I have never seen this before. It effects NRR.

Posted by Desiboi80 on (March 23, 2014, 17:43 GMT)

@ Johnny_129 - Nope, you are not the only one. I am might upset too. Rohit for the longest time has been playing very slow for himself be it One-day games or T20 and he has messed up Dhawan's natural game completely. Rohit ends up looking like a hero when the runs come on later or goes down like a zero trying to up the ante later on. If it wasn't for Virat's fluent inning this game would have ended up being much tougher. The way the Mumbai commentators' get all giddy when Rohit ends up hitting few shots is pathetic.

Remarkably things for India in this match. 1.Bhuvi got the ball to swing and registered the most economical spell of t20, and that to when gayle was in the crease. 2.Amit Mishra's bowling. 3.Rohit batting. Unforgivable things for India on this match. 1.Drop catches. 2.Yuvi batting, the match that should have won with 4 overs to spare have been won with just 2 balls to spare.

Is there a rule that they would give away only 1 run if the batsmen hit a 4 if only 1 run is required? Can you please tell me how is this logical

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 17:38 GMT)

Two matches in a row, the batsmen crossed over without waiting for the ball to reach the boundary. Stupid, to say the least.

Apart from the NRR India lost due to the charitable match training given to Yuvi (training should be outside a competitive match), the two senseless crossing over cost India an NRR of 0.15 (6 runs -- instead of 8 runs India got 2-- divided by 40 overs over the 2 games). A difference of 0.15 could be huge. The chances of more than 2 teams ending up with the same normal winning points are very high in this group.

if everybody are talking about Yuvraj Singh that he is out of form, then what about S.dhawan, he doesn't look convincing like an international batsman even while scoring, he doesn't have the balance like some good batsman.. for that matter Sehwag had never looked so ugly even when he was out of form.. i don't think dhawan is our answer to sehwag even in future.. he will surely struggle against good bowlers in all formats. Stop praising him that he is an wonderfully talented batsman like so many who really are.but with the squad picked up by Dhoni he has made sure that there is no replacement.. Uthappa should have been in the team with his current form.. Rohith sharma is better looking, but he takes too much time upfront.. dont make the mistake of picking Rahane in the team.. he may be good for tests and IPL, he is an one dimensional player in international one dayers and 20-20. he may improve in future.but not now. Raina has worked on his game.nice to see him gettin into good position

Yuvraj Singh has always been my favorite cricketer for many years now and im from Mumbai not Northern India but I am very disappointed not just in his batting but overall play.anyone can go through a bad patch and hes been a match winner so many times for us but maybe its time for Rahane to come in now .Yuvraj seems very low on confidence/form and Rahane would be better at this time .

India will need a 80 run victory in their next match against Bangladesh as an insurance for a possible 50 run defeat against Australia to keep their net run rate above other teams in this group 2.

Posted by sha1235 on (March 23, 2014, 17:32 GMT)

I agree with India losing a golden opportunity to up its NRR, which would definitely hurt our chances if we lose to Australia. Dhoni's comments that the batsmen in the middle are responsible undermines his job of being the captain. If he cant do even that, he is unfit to lead.

Posted by henchart on (March 23, 2014, 17:31 GMT)

@punerisachin: Batsmen crossed on both the occasions before the ball reached the fence so only singles were added to the scores.Indians wont upset the winning combination. Yuvraj Singh would feature against Bangladesh despite his horrendous run in both the matches .Indians are less practical with their selection and go more by reputation than form.@rohanblue : You can smell a India-Pak final while I can visualize Mcullum holding World T20 Trophy.

Posted by Harmony111 on (March 23, 2014, 17:29 GMT)

Winning a 130 run target in the 20th over is very poor. Horrible thinking by India here. They do not realize that the last time they failed to get into the SF cos they had ONE bad game against Aus even though they won against Pak & SA. Then too, they could have won in lesser time against Pak but showed no interest.

Twice in two matches here, India had the chance of winning in 16 overs but both times they have failed to double the advantage. What is the point of bowling well if your batsmen aren't going to score them fast enough? It is embarrassing to see that you are winning with just 2 balls left. Any other team would have won in at most 17 overs.

India's NRR is a mere 0.36 after two wins. Other teams would have a NRR of around 1.25 after getting to chase so low totals. NZ's NRR after one win is an astonishing 1.68 for eg.

One thing I don't understand is why has India's NRR come down? It should have gone up.

Really nove to see asian brothers (especially SL'ans) praising India.respect for you guys too.lets hope for the asian trio to get to the semis.also well played pakistan on a very gopd win against aussies :)

Yuvi needs to be dropped now. Now it should be obvious to cricket lovers even from Punjab also that there is no point in blindly supporting him. His time is up. Replace him with rahane and have an extra batsmen in place for him in next series. Once the best fielder of india is the worst among batsmen - fielders. Its not costing us the match now only RR , but may cost us a SF birth if India loses against WI and the fault would be of Dhoni for team selection. yuvraj is trying his level best, but he looks demoralized, unable to improve. Excellent performance by Bhuvi though. This guy never gets justice from Indian Fans or Dhoni. Thumbs up for your swing dude. You brought me a big smile..

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 17:26 GMT)

Replace Yuvi by rahane or else its gonna be difficult in the upcoming matches!!

Posted by surgeon101 on (March 23, 2014, 17:26 GMT)

the two most hyped up teams have produced the most boring game so far! west indian batsmen need to drop there cocky 'vivan richards'-like swagger and learn to grovel for each run, cause none of them (including Gayle) are great batsmen.

Posted by dganger on (March 23, 2014, 17:26 GMT)

I will remember this match for one of the finest spell of pure swing bowling in T20. A figure of 3 runs in 3 overs is incredible that too against the likes of Gayle & company.

Posted by Coolcapricorn on (March 23, 2014, 17:25 GMT)

Although it was a stroll in the park for us in a convincing win due to our bowling efforts, I still think we should have finished the match off by say the 17th over to be critical. However it was probably largely due to to Virat getting out in the 15th over. Yuvi still looks scratchy against spin & got out to a silly shot, dropped another relatively easy catch today but will be probably be allowed to find some form in the remaining two group matches. Mishra's brilliant performances prove that he has been very unlucky in not having been chances to play for India more often. Still room for improvement & hopefully will get an opportunity in either of their next two matches to bat first, set a good total & then successfully defend it.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 17:24 GMT)

please for GOD'S sake take yuvi out of the team.it is very sad to see him how he struggles to take a single in the final over.if yuvi continues in the team, definitely India will going to suffer.

Posted by batman_gothamcity on (March 23, 2014, 17:24 GMT)

Congrats to India on winning this , but the way it was stretched till last over frustrated a lot of fans. MSD it seems wanted Yuvi to spend some time to get back in groove . Have a feeling that he will succeed against the Aussies .Some Indian fans complaining against Kohli scoring fifty or India winning , very strange !!!

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 17:24 GMT)

As far as i understand,as the batsman crossed before the ball reaching boundary so only 1run counted...some rule like that...

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 17:22 GMT)

Even though India is winning, their net run rate is really taking a hit because of these last over wins. Since India is in group of death, the run rate might decide who will go into the next stage.

i dont know who is behind yuvraj and why is he even in the team, no offence and i am a true yuvi fan and if he performs by all means please play him. Rahane and binny are far more deserving and they have to be brought in to complete our batting. please please please one more true fan requesting justice for number 4 position. Die hard fans of india are requesting yuvi out, rahane/binny in

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 17:18 GMT)

If India lose to Australia and if Australia and Pakistan wins every other match, then the scenario might change, as Aussies are very smart to pick NRR in tournaments. Don't they have any statisticians to do some elementary mathematics? Yuvraj is already becoming a liability, as he can't bowl, neither is he taking catches and with his batting, he is just creating panic in the dressing room. Apart from Kohli and Raina to an extent, no one else knows how to shift gears, to achieve greater NRR. Rohit, Shikar, Yuvraj should watch some of Kohli's chases each and everyday to understand, how to play under pressure and how to pickup run rate.

Posted by vick2025 on (March 23, 2014, 17:18 GMT)

I agree with many here..its time to DROP Yuvi in the next game....he just need more practice off-field. There are others who can play and field better than him so why waste their talents.....take a break Yuvraj Singh.

Posted by Snambidi on (March 23, 2014, 17:16 GMT)

India deserves congratulations especially the Bowlers& of course Kohli& R.Sharma. Last over was full of Suspense & Tension for India which Raina removed soon after his arrival at the crease. Being on the top of the Group2 with highest run rate is also something rewarding for India. Keep up The Spirit TEAM INDA to enter the senmifinal of this World cup T20

Posted by TAJY on (March 23, 2014, 17:13 GMT)

What can I say about West Indies. They have obvious strengths and glaring weaknesses. All teams have to do it take away the strengths and watch them crumble. West Indies problems are best exemplified in their best player, Chris Gayle. No one hits the ball harder, no one launches sixes easier than him. But if you look at his performance today you'll see his obvious weakness, running between the wickets. if you can't consistently rotate the strike then your effectiveness will always be determined by (1) the state of the pitch and (2) the level of opposition. In this case, the pitch slowed down, boundary hitting was more difficult. Yet the WI batsman still swung and swung, trying to get their sixes when they were suppose to look for 1s and 2s. India were top class with their bowlers, and WI could do nothing. Gayle ended up on 34 from 33. Pathetic given that he also struck 3 boundaries. To further prove the weakness, he got run out. Gayle would never be a top-class batsman cuz HE CAN'T RUN

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 17:13 GMT)

@ramz30380 There is a rule that with one run to win, if the batsman hits a boundary, but the batsman cross before the ball reaches the boundary, it counts as only one run. Had Raina and Rohit not crossed then that would have been a four.

Apart from that, sure India should have won sooner, but come one 2 wins is 2 wins, so well done. Also till now I honestly believed that there was only one world class spinner playing today - Ajmal. However having seen Mishra do the basics of spin so well, flight the ball and beat the batsman for flight, in an era when Bowlers no longer want to flight the ball. I think that soon there will be 2 world class spinners in the world.

Posted by Inspector_Clouseau on (March 23, 2014, 17:12 GMT)

Yuvi, come one man! You always played for the country. What happened to you now? Instead of upping the NRR for the team you are playing for yourself. Is this selfishness, ignorance or lack of form? You are not even half the player you used to be. Please don't become a burden in the team.

Posted by scklnka on (March 23, 2014, 17:11 GMT)

well we have won the match a got 2 points, but what about the net run rate ,last time we where out of this tournament because of net run rate, and about yuvraj ,please retrie and make some room for fresh legs in the team he's bowling is pathetic ,he's fielding is pathetic 2,3 drop catches ,today dropped Gayle, and he's bating is pathetic too, forget about hitting 6 sixes ,he cannot hit a single boundary, only positive is our spin bowling and the very best in the business virat, hopefully this time we make to semis and then to final, from die hard India fan

Posted by parikshit_Ops on (March 23, 2014, 17:09 GMT)

Indian Fans, spare Rohit for some time, yaar. Yes he played a bit slowly. I am also not much fan of him. He needs to pick ones and twos much more often but the real problem area is Yuvraj Singh. He may be some people's favorite putting it bluntly especially some people from Punjab or northern India are supporting him blindly, but guys he is near expiry date. Yes, fantastic player for India in the past, MOS in 2011 world cup, but now the worst fielder among batsmen, the worst batsman and the worst allrounder . So dont let your emotions come in way. Atleast in Raina's case you know that on subcontinent pitches he is don and comparatively flop on bouncy ones but Yuvraj for last 10 matches or so can't even bat in subcontinent, its time to pick Rahane for now and think about extra batsmen in squad after the end of series. I enjoyed your cricket Yuvi and remember your all innings right from 80 or so against Aussie as 18 yr old vividly but with due respect its time to let others play.

Posted by love_pk on (March 23, 2014, 17:06 GMT)

Another easy win for india but they really dragged it to last over which is quite strange. Though india is comfortable with 2 wins and all set for the semifinal birth but if anything happens in the last 2 matches they might have to regret this drag. For the time being they are playing very well and got a good combination which suits the conditions.

Posted by cvenka on (March 23, 2014, 17:06 GMT)

Though india won against WI, dhoni is answerable to the paying public as what his strategy was in batting. India has a relatively moderate total to chase & that too less than what they chased against pak. inspite of this & inspite of having no pressure at all while batting, the team scrambled to win with only 2 balls to spare. they had enough wicket, very less runs to chase, had very good chance to inflate their run rate (even this was possible against pak also). inspite of having these advantages they chose to win in the last over only! for 19 overs they batted freely but when only 1 run was needed there was huge pressure due to yuvi's inability to score that vital run (vital in the sense that atleast it would have helped to keep his place for the next match). Just imagine had raina out for first ball!

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 17:05 GMT)

Posted by Desiboi80 on (March 23, 2014, 17:05 GMT)

@Amit Jain - Do you understand definition of a flat track? Spinning pitch does not equal to flat track. Kohli has scored run all around the world and if it wasn't for him today, India could have have faltered after losing Dhawan for 0 as Rohit takes for ever to get going.

Posted by Johnny_129 on (March 23, 2014, 17:03 GMT)

I am an Indian fan but am I the only fan who is not highly delighted with this win?? India's run rate has actually decreased - Here is Dhoni mumbling and searching for words to explain why India did not take an excellent opportunity to up their run rate! Sure, Dhoni says take one match at a time (which is the answer I expected from him) but when the win is a certainty then surely it is wise to look at the BIG PICTURE?? If India gets eliminated on run rate then, both, Dhoni & Rohit should get a solid kick on their behinds!!

Posted by kc69 on (March 23, 2014, 17:01 GMT)

Dont understand why Dhoni is not replacing Yuvi with Rahane, because its costing us too much- drop catches, Net run rate drop,no bowling abilities and whats next.I know one thing for sure Chris Gayle will come hard atleast in one match this tournament and I am happy it will not against India.Watch out Pak, Aus or Bangladesh one of your bowling attack will be hit by Gayle storm.Anyway congrats team India we are 1 win away from qualifying to semis.

What is Yuvraj singh doing in this team? only God knows...he is embarassing himself....he is not even a mere shadow of his past....it is really sad to see him drop catches and stuggle to bat....he should retire with whatever dignity is left....at the moment Aussies looks like a Juggernaut stopping them will be a daunting task...with this weak run rate I dont know what we are going to do if we lose any game....

Posted by Night_Fury on (March 23, 2014, 17:00 GMT)

I am laughing on few comments which are posted here. Shows how jealous people are. It's almost certain India will now reach semis. Our next match is against BD and we should seal it then and there itself. My only real concern is Yuvi. Yuvi needs to come in form. He is needed for us to go a bit more. This group is very tough with Aus and Pak and it will be difficult for WI if Gayle does not fire. The other group is bit easy and I think SL will cream them all. It's gonna be between NZ and SA for 2nd spot and I am putting money on SA for only 1 reason. AB dev. He is due and NZ might take brunt tomorrow. Good Luck to all

Pathetic batting by Yuvraj took the game to the last over .Guys who are criticizing rohit are unbelievable .When he accelerates and loses wicket they say he gave it away .When he stays till end they call him selfish. What is he supposed to do? .He played perfectly today. Supported kohli by rotating strike and then after kohli hot out and yuvi was struggling took the strike hit a boundary to release pressure and made it 1 off 6 balls. The score was 130 not 170 so he could take his time bat sensibly. It should have been 8 wicket win. India almost assured of semifinal berth. Next match get binny for yuvi or go with unchanged XI .Do not try to expt with bowlers .This is a settled combo .Great chance to win this time

Posted by AD_CKT_IND on (March 23, 2014, 16:53 GMT)

Run rate will only come in to play if you lose matches so I'm not that concerned given that India has won both their matches thus far. What is concerning me more is India dropping catches and Yuvi's form and attitude. Someone put him out of his misery by dropping him you'll be doing him and the spectators a huge favor

congrats indian team.. 2 on 2.. great going..

as usual the team carries burdens.. this time yuvraj singh is the guy.. gosh.. hez making a mockery of himself on the field and with the bat.. shame.. but dhoni will keep playing him as he never changes the winning combination..

ashwin!!! u r the so called leading spinner in the team.. how come a leading spinner bowl a negative line from the start, in both the matches.. thats criminal.. even raina seems attacking..

Don't understand why India's best fielder yuvi is dropping catches?

all the best for game against Bangladesh

clearly Dhoni is the x-factor, India had been missing. His calm in the field and charm with the toss; well under the circumstances he is rulling the ship for India, though Kohli surprises me every time with his never to get out style of aggressive batting. love from Pakistan to both.

If India lose to Aus, then both Aus and Pak will end up with higher run rates than India!! Assuming the other results go as expected, Pak and Aus will qualify and India will be eliminated because of their own stupidity!! Chasing two small totals India played extra safe and did not look at the big picture. At least, Kholi tried upping the run rate. Rohit just kept batting at a comfortable rate!

This match has shown us exactly why Dhoni stands exposed in foreign conditions. Here our spinners are capable of choking even Chris Gayle and inducing errors so Dhoni can sit back and wait for errors even in test matches. However in truly foreign conditions where our spin is neutralized, he is a bit like a rabbit under headlights when his sub-continental tactics don't quite come off.

Dhoni seems to get his tactics right on the Sub-continent. Hes been quick to pick 3 spinners in BD, the obvious thing to do, if u hv such bowlers to command.

Why was he so timid and defeatist / defensive in SA & NZ? In conditions there, the obvious choice wud hv been to pick the best, fastest pace bowlers available. None of Bhuvi, Varun Aaron or Umesh Yadav got enuf chances there.

Hopefully, the better tactics shud fetch him better results now.

Posted by cricfanatic75 on (March 23, 2014, 15:16 GMT)

@ Swaminathan Krishnamoorthy they dont get the run they ran because the batsman was caught. They only get one run for the no ball!!

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 15:15 GMT)

Smith and Gayle underplayed then what they could have. only reason is Fear of loosing the IPL contract and West indies not getting much cricket under the belt

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 15:14 GMT)

Very disappointing WI batting

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 15:13 GMT)

Jadeja conceeded 20 runs in the last overs which is going to change this game upside down. Wait and watch how Windies going to take a control on this match 3 great bowlers Narine, Badree and Santokie..

Posted by theRule19 on (March 23, 2014, 15:13 GMT)

Wrong selection one would think to drop Rampaul. Rampaul has bowled well against the Indians and is a good T20 bowler. 130 target is low against the Indians.

Posted by wapuser on (March 23, 2014, 15:10 GMT)

There is nothing wrong with the pitch, either Indian bowlers bowled well or westindian bastmen played bad. decision is in your hand.

Teams can now rest assured that whenever dhoni win toss he will opt only for fielding. So this gives the teams to plan their strategy well in advance by choosing their team according to suit batting first & bowling second. I dont think a good captain will this much chance to other teams. But the only thing that keeps dhoni following ths same option is other teams some how fail to capitalise on this...

There is a big question , whether it is worth to say West Indies as champions. There lethargic play put the tournament tasteless.

Posted by Lakpj on (March 23, 2014, 15:09 GMT)

India bowled well but it was very very poor from West Indies. You can't expect them to defend their title if they bat like this. I think they were a bit over confident that they could hit sixers at any time. If they are really poor like this against spinners surely Pakistan and Bangladesh could be fancying their chances.

Posted by neanderthal on (March 23, 2014, 15:09 GMT)

I am shocked to see the crowd in Bangladesh. They were completely silent when India was doing well against West Indies. I am now not at all surprised at why some BD supporters hate India so much in these forums. It is a generic thing for them. All of them are pakistan supporters and India haters even though they call their nation bangladesh.

WOW! What a performance from India! For all the talk on the poor Indian bowling.... the bowlers have done a splendid job - not so much can be said of the catching though!

With the dew setting in, the WI spinners may not be that effective - Ind shud be able to get to the target with more overs to spare.... GO INDIA!!!!

Posted by TRAM on (March 23, 2014, 15:08 GMT)

3 overs 3 runs , ever heard of that in T20? That itself if enough to win the match. What a captaincy to not give BKumar the 4th over at the end!

Posted by wapuser on (March 23, 2014, 15:08 GMT)

Indian team had a big concern of their bowling before the start of worldcup but now after seeing this in first two matches I can say Indian bowling looks one of the dangerous attack in world T20.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 15:07 GMT)

very gud bowling by undian seamers...

Posted by Seperior on (March 23, 2014, 15:05 GMT)

@Manessha Gamage you should've recall the Dark Blue mens performance in Dumbulla match in 2010

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 15:02 GMT)

india bowling well again. spinners are superb especially mishra. he is the surprise package in this event.

also wicket has gone slow i think. during last half of aus innings, it looked a but slow. 2 overs before maxwell got out , were hard to put away bowlers whereas both finch and max were going good. they should make 2 pitches and play 2 nd game on different wicket.

Posted by Haleos on (March 23, 2014, 15:01 GMT)

Jaddu n mishy outperform the lead spinner yet again. Well done. Problem is when only one spinner would b required both of them would b dropped in favor of the least effective spinner.

ipl shadow behinde wi bating colleps

Posted by cvenka on (March 23, 2014, 14:59 GMT)

If ashwin is the number one slip catcher for india, i wonder about the quality of the other fielders. I dont remember the number of catches he dropped there! I think the only reason for dhoni to place ashwin in slip is that he found no other place in the fielding area! but by this he is making a fatal mistake. giving runs is is a better option than giving lives to quality batsmen.....

Posted by Johnny_129 on (March 23, 2014, 14:58 GMT)

If WI get a low total and if India has the run chase under control then it is very important for India to try and achieve the target quickly. It is very likely that 2 or more teams would be tied for the qualifying spots. India has to think ahead - very very important!!!

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 14:57 GMT)

Didn't understand... 99-6 Jadeja bowled a no ball... That Simmons hit catch...Russell took the strike as batsmen crossed the line... Score was 100-6..... But score should have been 101-6 ???

Posted by love_pk on (March 23, 2014, 14:46 GMT)

The way the WI is playing, the are reminding us the the pak batting and they might end up with a similar score as well or even lower than pak score a day earlier. This should be a walk in the park for Indian batting power house.

Posted by Seperior on (March 23, 2014, 14:40 GMT)

I don't think Yuvi is physically fit.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 14:37 GMT)

Talking about indian bowling..... well they are doing a better job than most, certainly better than pak, keeping gayle on pitch and binding him..... whow!.... thats almost impossible.

Posted by wapuser on (March 23, 2014, 14:36 GMT)

Wi can pack their bags and go home really poor batting performance

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 14:36 GMT)

wow what a match, the blue team cant catch, and the other team cants bat.

Posted by wapuser on (March 23, 2014, 14:34 GMT)

its look like West Indian trying to test Indian bating line up but I am telling you now anything less than 175 will be a piece of cake for India and I am giving this statement as a Pakistani suppoter but the fact is fact.

Posted by Harmony111 on (March 23, 2014, 14:33 GMT)

The moment I saw the catch was going to Yuvi I felt that may be the last drop would have come to his mind and he might drop it and he did that. It would be sad to see such a player to go off like this and I hope he gets his mojo back. Yuvi at his best is an awesome player. He won us the last WT20 title but that was 2007 and this is 2014.

WI may put up a low score today. MSD may want to send Yuvi high up to get an opportunity to bat and get his rhythm back otherwise I feel we may have a passenger in the remaining matches here.

Posted by wapuser on (March 23, 2014, 14:30 GMT)

Fielding hasn't just been upto the standard :/ gayle looks completely out of touch

Posted by Snambidi on (March 23, 2014, 14:28 GMT)

Of all the greatest once upon a time fielder Yuvaraj Singh dropping Chris Gayle is rather unbelievable. And that too after his hitting a Six off Mishra.

Yuvaraj has to be more cautious especially because he did drop catches in the earlier Game also.he should not hurt his reputation of being one of the Best players of T20 games. In the first World cup he had despatched 6 balls over the fence bowled by Chris Broad when India played against England.India had taken the Worldcup home then. Yuvaraj was the man of the series.such anall rounder dropping Silly catches looks very odd & miserable. Hope it is an indication of his becoming a hero later in this Tournament. That's the just way to console ourselves

Yuvraj is an amazing cricketer but there is a saying - make hay while the sun shines and Yuvraj has contributed a lot to indian cricket but he is past his prime. time to give chance to Rahane

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 14:19 GMT)

As a Pakistani, feel happy today that we won. Now I want India to win, as I always want Asian teams to well, despite out rivalry. But come on, W Indies, make it interesting. How many lives does these two openers need? Smith playing a test innings.

Posted by Nampally on (March 23, 2014, 14:16 GMT)

Brilliant swing Bowling by Kumar but butter fingers of Indian fielders cost India dearly even after first 6 overs. Gayle was dropped by Ashwin in the slips & a dolliest catch to Yuvraj singh was floored- again off Gayle. Smith scratched a few runs but is lucky to be still at the crease. Dhoni retained Yuvraj singh despite his poor fielding, poor Bowling & poor batting. So far he has already dropped a sitter. Can he contribute anything at all- remains to be seen. But Indi missed a golden chance of getting Gayle out twice. Success at last in 9th over - smith falls to Ashwin! But Gayle's dropped catches will hurt India.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 14:16 GMT)

Yuvraj dropped a catch in the first match and he has dropped another one today. He only looks a shadow of his former self. It is a tragedy, he has never recovered his form his illness.

He does not merit a place in this team. Rahane should be included without further deliberation.

Posted by jb633 on (March 23, 2014, 14:14 GMT)

Brilliant performance from Kumar. The best opening spell of the competition by a mile. He has Gayle in his back pocket.

Posted by TRAM on (March 23, 2014, 14:13 GMT)

Yesterday I had mentioned "we know the fitness of a player from his fielding" to indicate how unfit Yuvraj is. Dhoni doesn't care. He drops the sitter again today of Gayle!

Posted by arnie66 on (March 23, 2014, 14:13 GMT)

Is Yuvraj the new Ishanth ? Can't bat, Can't bowl and also Can't field (drops a catch in every match). He's a far cry from the Yuvraj who helped India win the WT20 and the world cup. Hope Dhoni drops him if he continues to not perform !

Posted by   on (March 23, 2014, 13:56 GMT)

Bhuvneahwar Kumar definitely in my starting XI come the first test against England.

Posted by Himadri_Debnath on (March 23, 2014, 13:53 GMT)

What is Aswin doing..shame on him..Good bowling from india

Posted by ozmaan on (March 23, 2014, 13:46 GMT)

:P best of luck India , from a Pakistani :D

Posted by wapuser on (March 23, 2014, 13:45 GMT)

Rahane should get chance ahead of yuvraj.
