Crowe: Malinga captaining gives NZ edge

Big Picture

Widely tipped to be the sides to progress from the ''easy'' group, Sri Lanka and New Zealand find they must win their final group match or be eliminated. Things have not so far panned out as either had hoped. England are the top-eight team Sri Lanka might have been most comfortable of beating, but they were undone by the best innings of the tournament so far, while New Zealand were victims of one of Twenty20 cricket's most aggressive final overs, from Dale Steyn. Pitches in Chittagong have not been as slow and low as anticipated, and on occasion, both teams have had their team compositions wrong as well.

Both teams now have a clearer grip on their strategy. New Zealand added seam-bowling cover by introducing James Neesham to their XI, and replaced the out-of-sorts Tim Southee with the dependable Trent Boult. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will absurdly have had their XI boosted by their captain's suspension. Lahiru Thirimanne is most likely to replace Dinesh Chandimal in the middle order.

On most occasions, New Zealand's ability to blunt Sri Lanka's spinners might shape as a key encounter, but evening games in Chittagong have been unkind to slow bowlers. Sri Lanka rifled through five balls in their last match, as Hales and Eoin Morgan pillaged their way through the middle overs. Sachithra Senanayake has not been a penetrative weapon in any case - though Sri Lanka are likely to leave out Ajantha Mendis for Rangana Herath, whose bowling is less sensitive to the conditions. The forecast suggests dew may indeed materialise on Monday night.

New Zealand will be encouraged to have their top order purring after only two full matches in the tournament. Kane Williamson, Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor have all made commanding fifties, and though Sri Lanka's top four has also been among the runs, they have made them in far less convincing fashion.

In the spotlight

Lasith Malinga suggested before the match that captaincy should not be too much of a burden, and he might be right. There are three former captains and a current one in the XI. Even when Chandimal was at the helm, many decisions were formed by committee. Where Malinga may feel a little extra pinch is when it comes to taking wickets. Teams have blocked him out safely so far in the tournament, subduing his penetrative potential in return for 10 or so fewer runs from his four overs. He has reclaimed something of his old form in the past two months, but will now hope for a truly matchwinning performance to send his side into the knockouts.

New Zealand ask a lot from Kane Williamson, given his relative youth. He has been shoved up the order to open in this tournament, and though he may still feel more comfortable in the middle overs, he has been steady in his new role. Though not conventionally thought of as one of New Zealand's matchwinners, Williamson is perhaps New Zealand's best player of spin - particularly in Asia. If Sri Lanka's slow-bowlers can make an impact in the match, a well-set Williamson may be best-placed to counter it.

Pitch and conditions

The Chittagong square has seemingly dried out during the tournament's course, but it is yet to match Mirpur for turn. Skies are expected to remain clear for the match, which of course increases the likelihood of dew forming.

Teams news

There is a chance legspinning-allrounder Seekkuge Prasanna may replace Ajantha Mendis instead of Herath, but Sri Lanka are likely to go with Herath - the steadier hand.

Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Lasith Malinga (capt), 11 Rangana Herath

New Zealand have no cause to change their combination following a comfortable win over Netherlands.

New Zealand (probable): 1 Kane Williamson, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Brendon McCullum (capt.), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 James Neesham, 6 Corey Anderson, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Trent Boult, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Mitchell McClenaghan

Stats and trivia

  • Sri Lanka's net run rate is 2.124 higher than South Africa's which means, Sri Lanka will likely top the group if they win
  • Brendon McCullum became the first man to 2000 T20 runs against Netherlands. The next-highest runscorer, Mahela Jayawardene, sits 600 runs adrift
  • Tillakaratne Dilshan's strike rate is 112 in 12 innings since the start of 2013

"We are playing night games and that's the situation in the tournament. We must know to use those conditions we can't give excuses for our skills. We must know how to play with a wet ball. That's my feeling as a bowler." Sri Lanka acting captain Lasith Malinga on dewy Chittagong nights

Video embedded for this article says "Crowe: Malinga captaining gives NZ edge". I think that was the edge for Sri Lanka where Mahela and Sanga took the steeringwheel.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 16:49 GMT)

Win or loose, Sri Lanka always bring the beauty to the world cricket. Best in it. What a win today.....

Posted by Liyanage.1283 on (March 31, 2014, 15:02 GMT)

Even if SL wins (which I doubt), we dont deserve to be called a good team.

Yesterday, India was in very similar situation, 60 odd for 4 wickets around 11th over like SL today. See the comparison for yourselves at the score India manage to produce (vs) what SL could get. As I always, SL is just a overhyped mediocre team. We still are not there. We should only be lucky, if we can get to semis.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 13:31 GMT)

SL will be very happy to lose this toss and bat first. They love defending totals and the dew is also expected to less than expected.

Posted by Liyanage.1283 on (March 31, 2014, 13:20 GMT)

So pity that SL have a captain today who could not even tell properly what is his team composition, at the toss. After Ranatunga, SL never could produce a captain of supremacy.

Posted by Liyanage.1283 on (March 31, 2014, 13:11 GMT)

This comes from a sane Srilankan fan.

The more other fella srilankan fans remain shut, the more its better for us, than to be proved as insane.

We are still a team slightly better than minnows and never won tests in most nations (including INDIA).

We have only 'so called' legends now who average in early or mid 30s. Being a srilankan, I can claim Aravinda de silva and muralidharan as the only legends that SL produced all these 40 years as compared to lot of legends and greats that other countries went on to produce in this period, so we have to accept the hard fact that, we still not there. And we will look funny if we claim so.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 13:10 GMT)

sri lanka has a bit of edge in this match because of malinga factor. in the batting department they have highly experienced batters up in batting line that makes lankans difficult to beat

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 13:03 GMT)

New zealand won the toss..yippeee!! But there's not much dew tonight..let's hope it comes later when new zealand come onto bat.. SL fans get ready..

Posted by itsqashi on (March 31, 2014, 12:40 GMT)

Winners get ready you have to face Pak in Semi. Best of luck to both the team. Both the team are in good shape and no favrit.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 12:37 GMT)

I see a lot of SL fans have thrown in the towel because of the dew factor. The customary pre match excuses have started. I really liked what Malinga had to say though.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 12:34 GMT)

Begining of the Asia cup and the T20 WC ,only game they hv lost was England match.after win of 14. no matter what the toss is we are good enough to win the WC . cheers Sri Lanka...

Posted by Neutral007 on (March 31, 2014, 12:33 GMT)

Cool down guys. As a cricket fans we all shouldn't be fighting who is best or worst. Any team who plays well on the given can win a T20 match. So take it easy may the best team win. As Indian fan, I want as many Asian teams as possible in the semi final. Good Luch SL.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 12:32 GMT)

From a neutral perspective I agree with the author. Whoever wins the toss will have a huge advantage. Bowling 1st will be crucial. That said Tahir was good for the Proteas bowling 2nd but did not turn it a lot. SL also have the man for the big moment - the gun slinger they call Slinger Malinga. Best death bowler in the world world.

Posted by Yousufahmed1 on (March 31, 2014, 12:22 GMT)

I guess there will not be two upsets in a day and NZ will win easily. :)

Posted by Dil-Fernando on (March 31, 2014, 12:22 GMT)

sri lanka is much balanced side without useless chandimal who can't bat & bowl but just within the team for the take some easy catches. But with maling's captaincy unsure to go wich direction...poor decision making to choose a captain for most important encounter.

Posted by akramk on (March 31, 2014, 12:20 GMT)

This is going to be a difficult phase for Sri Lanka. They have been lucky earlier to get this far. It remains to be seen whether they will still enjoy good fate. Even if SL get lucky in this match, they simply don't have the quality to compete in the semis. The future doesn't look great for them either. The oldest players in their team will retire after this tournament. These players are very ordinary, but even then SL don't have any obvious replacements for those vacated spots. They also have a problem with their captain. Chandimal rarely plays like a captain, but the selectors simply don't have any options. There is not much talent to choose from.

Posted by Shamithmudalige on (March 31, 2014, 12:19 GMT)

While, it is a good chance for Malinga to flex his muscles and prove his capability as a captain Team Sri lanka..this will give an alternative and a chance for succession planning but Mali needs to keep his temper on field under control. I think there are many senior players out there have great enough experience to create a guide for the victory....

Posted by SandipManjrekar on (March 31, 2014, 12:00 GMT)

A lot of discussion on who should be captain of SL but it is useless to discuss on this. Yes one can have doubts about a player being captain who never ever took responsibility. Everyone knows whoever captain of team SL, Sanga/MJ/Dilli are controlling the game. I sense a fear in SL fans' eyes just because of crucial game. If we count the strength of both team & compare it with one to one, we can find NZ has more firepower in T20 game especially. Winning by big margin against Netherlands doesn't count here. Mac is great captain who is having wonderful bowling strength that can crumble SL batting line up. This game is going to play on same pitch where Poms/Dutch are struggling to bat. Close encounter will be expected but kiwi's advance is inevitable. NZ were in top 4 till most recently since so many years. You can't write off them by calling rank no. 8.

Posted by subratachakrabarty on (March 31, 2014, 11:59 GMT)

With the standings and points tally, this will turn out to be a virtual Quarter-final or crucial super 6 encounter. The good thing about this encounter is the winning team is going to play semis, which means we won't have all the clumsy run rate issue in front of us in order to decide semi-finalists. Dew factor will be at its peak. Chittagong is, however, not as turning pitch as Mirpur. Initial 6 overs will be crucial. SL are having advantage for obvious reasons that they know the conditions. It will be a testing time for Malinga as bowler. I am also hoping to see a blistering knock from much hyped Corey Anderson. If SL win, they will be playing Pakistan (West Indies) in the semis. Same will be the case with Kiwis as well. The course of today's match will depend on the spin attack of both teams. I am surprised not to see Medis in the playing XI. He has impressive record against Kiwis and it might turn out to be a huge blunder for SL. A blunder, SL will regret for long long time.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 11:57 GMT)

India has really shown that they are the team to beat. This T20 World Cup has been so good with lots of matches been equally contested. SL's inability to play under lights will heavily be tested today. Will Experience prevail or the dew factor. The toss is going to bear heavily for both NZ and SL. Loose toss and might as well forget about it. Chittagong is not the best place to play T20 under lights. Whatever SL and NZ are on paper is irrelevant. What they are on the day is what matters. Dew is going to be the 12th man.

Posted by AkDoN on (March 31, 2014, 11:36 GMT)

SL being very Avg team may win just because they are from subcont. on other side NZ will have to show case that win series against home was not fluke & now they are amongst the attention. Win toss win match again

Posted by Blade-Runner on (March 31, 2014, 11:31 GMT)

As the captain, Malinga has one thing to do. Go out there and win that darn toss. The rest will be taken care of by The Panel - Mahela, Sanga, Mathews. Its doesn't really matter who the captain is, Its The Panel that runs the show . So its all good in the hood.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 11:07 GMT)

Malinga and brandon is the key. I want to nz win. Because i think india can beat nz easily to rather thn having a tight match with srilanka. Good luck anyway

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 11:07 GMT)

I don't expect SL to win today. They will do anything to avoid another humiliation at India's hands.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 10:54 GMT)

King_Ravana. You question has been answered. Let me ask you a question. Could you list down SL performances of recent times on overseas tours? I am sure you will have the good sense not to mention the Bangladesh tour.

Posted by Liyanage.1283 on (March 31, 2014, 10:51 GMT)

heart loudly says Srilanka, but mind clearly says Newzealand.

Well, even if we win against Nz today, we would lose in the semis 8 out of 10 times given how good is WI and PAK in this format. I can only dream for a golden period in late 90s for Srilanka after which we could not win comprehensively in any major icc tournament. If we SL fans remain grounded, we wont jump shouting against India and Pak fans. The fact of the matter is we are still searching a place is semis and should that itself a great accomplishment, given the mediocrity of our team.

Posted by _IndiaRocks on (March 31, 2014, 10:46 GMT)

I like Malinga. But today I got gut feeling that New Zealand will qualify. Toss is very important whoever bat's second will win the match.

Posted by vkias on (March 31, 2014, 10:36 GMT)

After the match against NZ....SL fans and players should watch the highlights of warm up matches to get the feeling of world beaters and cup winners

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 10:27 GMT)

Srilanka in semi-finals . Isn't it more of a tradition in World cups !

Posted by pak_winner on (March 31, 2014, 10:25 GMT)

SL is the most over rated team in the world, they just gt some mystery bowlers. Some teams find it difficult to read them first time, but once u face them twice or thrice they are lower than the club level bowlers... Thats what happen to mendis all around the world specially by pakistanis and for Malinga against india. These are really overrated bowlers. And their batsman they are pathetic they may be ok for tests but for T20i they all are "deer in the headlight". Apart from Thisara no one in SL can hit sixers Thisara also does that once in 10 matches. I hope Bmac and Corey smash SL bowlers out of the orbit. And Mills and Boult Crush SL batsmans,,,,

Posted by pak_winner on (March 31, 2014, 10:18 GMT)

SL is a pretty mediocre team but I love to see SL win this match. So for us pak it would be a cake walk in the semis. Then again we have to face the inform India that's a tough challenge.

Posted by nothingnew on (March 31, 2014, 10:11 GMT)

don't worry about the match today . We need good cricket . hope malinga is doing his best . He played more cricket and he know how to handle pressure situation more than any others. He know where he needs fields. I love if thirimanna would back to the Squad and dilshan plays no.5 position with few overs. any how this will be really good contest . Why did crow believe captaincy should go for batsman. We have see good captains over the past who are bowlers . Why about Malinga ? As personally i don't like Malinga being captain today . Mathew should be the full time captain.

Well all the Keyboard warriors who visited here by numbers, specially the intelligent Indians will disappear after SL win tonight. anybody can say anything in here, bashing players or teams, like our fellow Indians are doing by fearing SL would enter in to semis, but at the end of the day what matters at the end is the way your beloved team perform in the middle of the ground. and there's no pleasure, when you see haters gonna have to eat their own words. well that is gonna happen tonight as SL Lions gonna Roar.. Cheers, may the Tripple Gem bless SL team

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 9:28 GMT)

1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 seekuke pirasanna 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Lasith Malinga (capt), 11 Rangana Herath this team is good

Whenever India wins, its a luck and whenever SL wins they call it a superb display by the champions.

Posted by kapsitash on (March 31, 2014, 9:26 GMT)

Iam craving for SL to win this and face India for final where SL fans would remember that what happens when they play full fledged Indian team and will admit their win against young Indian team in asia cup was Fluke, but my gut feeling says that NZ will win this one.Best luck Srilanka and Malinga with his captaincy skills.Remember field placing for spinners and other bowlers would be key for Malinga.Mathews should have been the first choice after Chandimal..Lets meet after the match. LOL.

Posted by warneneverchuck on (March 31, 2014, 9:24 GMT)

I think nz shud win against this average team who couldnt defend 180 against eng

Posted by John_Geo on (March 31, 2014, 9:20 GMT)

I do not agree with Martin Crow's assessment that Malinga's captaincy puts New Zealand at an advantage. On the contrary, three things can go against Sri Lanka.

a. Brendon McCullum b. SL fielding c. the toss (SL has no control over this)

If SL can deal well with the first two, SL should win. Otherwise, it is NZ's game.

Posted by ramz30380 on (March 31, 2014, 9:17 GMT)

If NZ win this match there is a very high probability that they might struggle in the semis in Dhaka when they face Pak / WI as both have competent spin attacks.

On the other hand if SL was to win, it will post a greater danger, as they too have Mendis but their batsman wont have the freedom to score plenty as be it Pak or WI the spinners are strong.

Interesting two days of Sudden Death matches ahead... may the deserving team win!

wonderful to see the amount of comments from indians predicting sri lankan loss in upcoming SL and kiwis match. As a sri lankan I think it is a huge plus point.they cannot even bear the thought that sri lanka will come to the semi finals.even-though it is a game I hope sri lankans will answer these in the field today.Good Luck Team Sri Lanka

Posted by kapsitash on (March 31, 2014, 8:59 GMT)

If their is due than only Malinga will be a threat to NZ batsmen,Mendis out of form and Herath a quick spinner would only turn out to be a liability for SL team under due which will be their for sure. With the frame of mind Mccullum and his team is it will be tough for this SL team.Kyle mills will bowl well if NZ ball first. If their is no due it will be cakewalk for SL. Key Players:SL: Malinga,Kusal,Sanga,Thirimanne,Senanayake, kulla NZ: Williamson,Mccullum,Taylor,Anderson,Mills,Neesham NZ lack spinners and their bowling is weak but their batting is stronger than SL. My gut feeling NZ will win just becoz Mccullum and his team looks more desperate to win.

@King_Ravanaa..dude if you keep LOLing like that youre gonna have a stroke. India lost the asia cup bcuz there was no dhoni, yuvi or raina in the middle order. Same thing would have happened to Sri Lanka if Sanga was not there. Its gonna happen when sanga, jayawardan etc retire :P

Posted by vkias on (March 31, 2014, 8:42 GMT)

@King_Ravanaa....thats why the spinners of SL team are taken to cleaners by the country like England, who labelled as weak playing country against spin...its terrible form that SL is have spite of in relatively weak group...struggling to qualify for semis....after 1996, can you show any one win of your team in knockouts or finals against INDIA...ok leave this when is your team won comprehensively against any other team (except ND and including BD)...ok leave this too, when did any player of SL give his match winning performance..hope you answer all these questions without giving any excuses...plz publish

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 8:40 GMT)

Looking at the comments rather than kiwis its some so called champions who really want to see we exit from this round. all what i could say is if they really champions they dont need to exile others, they have to get ready to who ever comes in front of them. may 4-0 effect their morale. and hilariously they claim that Asia Cup is immaterial, then why you guys send your team for that tournament? plus when you won Asia cup in 2010 did you said that its immaterial?all these because sri lanka equalling india for most asia cup wins with this time victory.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 8:35 GMT)

Gone are the days when cricket used to be so simple. White Kit, Red Ball, Less Glamour, even players used to wear white kits in ODIs, no concept of T20. Test Players were given much importance than ODI players. TV Cameras used to show from back rather than front.

I wish may cricket go back to its real spirit.

Posted by sheno on (March 31, 2014, 8:30 GMT)

all the Indians who think SL is going to loose today will be proved wrong, also all the Indians who think that India is going to win this W20 will be proved very wrong. yes it is true india did not loose even 1 match in the group stage, but the first match they are going to loose is the Semi-final match. also we all know india is not a good team, they have proved it recently in SA and NZ. if they need to win oversees matches in the future they will have to take Asian pitchers with them. bottom line india won their last match yesterday.

Why a match equivalent to a quarter final called "Sudden Death"? Surely people know soccar. The match is not even tied. So how can it be a sudden death match?

Ok so here is the schedule till final of WCT20:

Qualifier: SL Vs NZ (WInner SL) Qualifier: WI Vs Pak (Winner Pak)

Semi 1: SL Vs Pak (Winner Pak) Semi 2: Ind Vs SA (Winner Ind)

Final: Ind Vs Pak (Winner 'You-know-who' India)

@vkias .. if i ask the same question from you, being a top ODI team in the rankings in past can you justify their whitewashes in ODI's in Aus, Eng, Nz and in SA?? i am not gonna talk about Ind Test performances lol, so can you justify why India could only win against Afgans and Bangladesh in Last Asia Cup, at least SL won close games as you mentioned, but why did Ind could not able to win a Single game against either Pak or SL??? and why they got beaten 4-0 to 8th ranked NZ team? now can you answer? lol

We have won against India in the recent Asia cup match ... i thk they forgot tht... not only sri lanka won WC.. they won 5 times Asia cup, CT, 2times WC & t20s runners up. We always playing good cricket, that's y we entered into most of final, unfortunately we missed to win some titles ..

These South Africans want NZ to to come to the 2nd place because of their low run rate so that SA will not have to play India in the Semis :) If Sri Lanka Win this mach they top the Group and SA will have to battle it out with India.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 8:21 GMT)

I want Srilanka to win the toss and bat first tonight..It will be quite nice to see how their bowling attack is in reality.. And seriously Malinga as captain? Why? Fast bowlers nvr make good captain cz they are just aggressive..See what's happening to stuart broad.. Why Mahela or Sangakkara don't want captaincy? Are they scared? Cz both of them lost major finals? Sanga lost wc 2011 final, Mahela lost wc 2007 and Wt20 2012 finals.. Ominous signs for SL..

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 8:17 GMT)

SLC had taken a wrong decision by captaining Lasith Malinga. Captaincy is over burden for him even though it is acting captaincy. We all know that he is a good bowler in this format. At the same time if he is distracted he is one of the most expensive bowler, then no need to hit his deliveries. He himself gives plenty of runs to opposition. He can be distracted easily by targeting other bowlers at the beginning by NZ. It will give more pressure to Malinga as bowler as well as acting Captain. Lets see how he handle this situation. I hope NZ will qualify for Semis.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 8:12 GMT)

Actually you can't compare SL with IND. All the matches were played under different conditions. BD supported India very well and made some good pitches for spin. And also there was no due at all. ;-). But Sri lanka played all their matches in past wickets which has been made BD intentionally, and of course with extreme due conditions.. even today match will be 75% depended on the toss. Batting first have 75% of chance of winning. If NZ bat first, SL will have 100% chance of winning and if SL bat first,NZ will have 50% chance of winning. ;-).. Go Lions go........;-)

@Sameera Madushan...everybody knows well...why SL was in top ranking in T20 for several months...they play lot of T20's than any other country, similarly India plays lot of ODI's and Australia plays lot of they are all toppers in those you agree for this kind of performance of SL in T20 spite of top T20 country, no comprehensive win at all (except ND)....huffed and puffed against both SA and BD....and they are very lucky to have place in weaker group unlike India, Pak, WI, Aus...if BD would have placed in your group, definitely it would have already in semis....SL's strength is bowling ha ha...where it is proved....INDIA only country remains unbeaten so far and has not given runs above 140 against any countries (power packed WI, Aus, Pak) is now going to repeat the glory of CT 2013, where it won the trophy without losing a single match

Posted by StevieS on (March 31, 2014, 7:46 GMT)

Why do we always play Sri Lanka in sudden death matches, I would rather play any other team. We always lose these games. Please please Sri Lanka drop Mendis it would be good for New Zealand as without looking at stats he has a very impressive record vrs us.

@javed805... There is no possibility of Srilanka vs Pakistan clash in Final. Here is the scenarios.. 1. First of all both team are not yet qualified for Semifinal. 2. Either team may qualify for Semis. 3. Neither team may qualify for semis. 4. Both team may qualify for Semis. 5. If both teams qualified then SL and Pak will be playing their 1SF match as SL will be top of the group table and Pak will be placed 2nd in their table. I think Pak has an edge and advantage of winning this match as they would have played 6 matches at the same ground before the semifinal. In other hand SF will be your 3rd match in this ground for the tournament. Pak will utilize the conditions very well. Same thing is applicable for india as well. They have already played 6 matches here and for SAF Semis will the 1st match at this ground. Everybody knows that when comes to Knock out SAF will be the first team to get out of the tournament. Based on the above facts we can expect India vs Pakistan Final. Pls Post

It is obvious that this is a match for NZ to lose, because SL is a very weak team. Similarly in our group, it will be a match for WI to lose because Pak is a very weak team. If the logic prevails, NZ and WI will be the other two semifinalists.

Eventhough it will be a cake walk for INDIA in Knockouts to face Sri Lanka if it luckily Qualifies, i would still prefer NZ in knockouts for an exciting contest irrespective of the results. Martin Crowe- Malinga as captain gives NZ the edge- lol!!! The so called legend who appeals for everything and shows displeasure to Umpire's call (even for wide) is really annoying for the viewers and atleast for that sake, we don't want to see SL in KOs

Posted by anoop3301 on (March 31, 2014, 7:28 GMT)

@King_Ravanaa: To put into context whatever you have mentioned, Ind has played international cricket form 82 yrs now(1932-2014) and SL have for 39 yrs( 1975-2014). Refer below link: ( have played 1389 matches so far across all where as SL have already played 1004 matches( 72% of what Ind have played). Any right minded person would agree that SL have to match 72% of Ind's success to be compared positively. Ind's achievements ( WC 1983, WCC 1985, T20 WC 2007, WC 2011, ICC CT 2013, Test victories in all countries). SL's achievements(WC 1996) and test victories in all countries except Ind and Aus. That does not equate to 72% of India's success for me. Ind also have a superior head to head record vs SL.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 7:28 GMT)

@upul Asnaga.. SL is one nation which is happy to just reach finals on many occassions, whereas india is happy holding high its two WCs, champion;s trophies and world T20 titles.. There's no medicine yet found for jealousy...

@Wenura Liyanage : For that to happen, Mccullum should not bat just like Dhoni did in the warm up match. Even if SL does not make it to the semis, you will take heart in the warm up match results and say " We beat India in the warm up match, hence we are better than them " lol..

@Wenura SL will lose easily as against England...Malinga is a captain...unbelievable....lose or win wont affect his he will play in IPL...honestly speaking as a cricket lover...SL team did not deserve to go semis...playing since from 3 months in BD across all formats...not even i saw a single comprehensive win by this GREAT TEAM....each and every match were last over finishes....only 5 runs win against SA, minnow bashers, lost horribly to weak T20 team...i wonder after the retire of LEGENDS...what will become to SL...Never wins even in subcontinent

@vikass you said sl is ovrr hyped team. can you imagine become no 1 in ranking in wt20 for 6months. over hyped team can't do like that. i don't want to keepup sl team. bcoz they have ability and they have proven that previous games except last one. they have good combination of team. malinga and mendis aren't only the players who can win the match. from sl 11 any one can come forward any cgange the game. dilshan not in a good form. but we can't say he is week. this csn be his match. india is good team no doubt abt that. they have good young players. but who can say it's unbeatable. i think if any team play well and with good sense they can beat india. we'll see match and see who is rightn best luck lions...

@Nuwas.. That SL is one of the most pedigreed teams in the T20 format cannot be disputed.A quick check on Statsguru tells that SL have won 38 of the 63 matches they have played in T20s.However the same Statsguru also tells that the longest winning streak was recorded by England which was 8 wins on the trot followed by Ireland.SL have one winning streak of 6 during 2009-10.right now they have won five on the trot with wins over Pak,Bangla and SA.if they win their next three games and go on to lift the cup which is the same probability as India and Pakistan they would have won 8 thereby tying with England and Ireland.Much as we all admire patriotism and pride for our very own telling that SL won 13 consecutive matches is I am afraid stretching the truth a bit too much.Regarding today's match do-or-die for both teams.SL should be surprised to find themselves in this situation given that they have camped in Bangladesh for the better part of 3 months..However count SL at own peril!!!

This match will not be a high quality one. Both teams are below par. NZ is actually better and also have better attitude, but we'll have to wait and see if they get unlucky on umpiring decisions, etc. If SL do get lucky, they will definitely have a hard time competing in the semi-finals.

Posted by King_Ravanaa on (March 31, 2014, 6:44 GMT)

@SandipManjrekar...SL advances just because of any of top 6 teams(SA,Oz,Poms,Kiwis,WI,IND) struggle, well isn't that basic principle where every other teams win over against it's opponent.? one has to win right?

"If you play hard against SL, you can past them in 100 times of 100"and isn't that statement applicable to every other teams, including your team??? i don't know what you are trying to prove or say here, just go through your fellow countrymen comments here. and mind it this is SL forum where it's SL fans lace to put their Ideas and so on

@Dixter ... you wanna know SL Cricket History? just go through Internet. Royal Thomian big school encounter was the oldest cricket encounter in the world after English Cricket encounters, which span over 150+years. Even Don Bradman and English team visited SL in 1920-1930 to play against then Ceylon Cricket team. after gaining Test status in 1982 it took only 3 years for SL to register their first test series win, guess who is the team, yeah it's against your Indian team. lol then before 1996 SL won test and series against Pak, Nz, Ind, SA, Eng, and just after 14 years after gaining test status, they have become world champions. no one need to talk about legends SL produce in such a short period of time and records they put. what does India achieved for 80+ years,? by Comparison SL is far ahead than India mate

Posted by Maverick2 on (March 31, 2014, 6:38 GMT)

Malinga as a captain?. that's pathetic decision from lankans. The main problems is lankans ability to find extraordinary solution to ordinary problems. They solve their choking in the finals or semifinals just by sacking the captains. As a result no players is ready to take the captaincy. Now they started adding scape goat in their team at the expense of one good player. Chandimal will not be in the playing eleven if he is not as scape goat (captain), of course god is on their side and gave them one more chance, banning him for one match. Now think what lankans come up with. lanka scourged for another scape goat and ended up with malinga.Common Snaggakara and Jeyawardne. You are not going to play any t20 hereafter. Why not take it up as a challenge and make history. You may be the first one to win WT20 for Lanka.

It would have been interesting to see how IND would have performed in Chittagong in the night because most of their wickets have been taken by the spinners in helpful conditions and in Chittagong spinners have been really ineffective due to heavy dew. So before trashing teams like SL, SA and NZ, IND fans should realize they might have struggled even more than the teams in group 2 to qualify for SF.

Posted by Dixter on (March 31, 2014, 6:07 GMT)

@@@ Lahiru Wijewardena - My friend, when Sri Lanka started playing cricket ? India recorded their first Test victory, in their 24th match, against England at Madras in 1952. Later in the same year, they won their first Test series, which was against Pakistan. They continued their improvement throughout the early 1950s with a series win against New Zealand in 1956. Where were you guys these times on earth and whats your history ?? SL fans have no eligibility to talk over or compare with great India.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 5:41 GMT)

@BDrox11, Yes, India won 4 games in a row by fluke. Also their, 2 world cup wins , one WT20 win and latest Champions trophy win were fluke. SL worked hard for 1996 win and also for the latest asia cup win. Other countries win by fluke :)

In limited overs cricket India might loose several meaningless bilateral series or multi team tournamets like the Asia cup....but when it comea to ICC tournamenta...we are the best...we play to win them...that even India haters will accept...i am sure...Srilanka are a good side and are great finalists...but they make it that far only to be thrashed by the true champion. @BDrox11..It is really laughable that you srilankans compare yourself to Aus, SA and NZ.. You are talking about fluke wins of India. Ask the opponents who faced Ind till now whether it was a fluke or not.. All the games were one sided, unlike the close games that SL has won on few occasions. You people had been in BD for over 3 months now, yet ur performance is so. Even Vs BD you luckily won on the last ball on more than one occasion. If you are not satisfied then look at the rankings, you people are behind in all three formats. The one you were slightly ahead was T20, that too you lost to us, the mighty indians.. I will be here after the match, I accept your challenge..

Posted by King_Ravanaa on (March 31, 2014, 5:39 GMT)

@aruna260... completely agree with you mate. the finals will also played in the Mirpur where teams like Ind, Pak, Wi already got used to those conditions pretty well, while Nz, SL and SA had to play all their games under immense difficult conditions. that's the challenge buddy, though it is unfair circumstance justice will achieve by both SA and SL reaching the finals. Sun, Moon and Truth and Justice can newer hide forever, Karma will solve it for teams like Ind, pak or WI lol

Posted by blue_kings on (March 31, 2014, 5:38 GMT)

I can really see some spicy comments from SL & Pak fans... Really both will be very interesting games and I wish the best team comes out as a winner as they are struggling currently to qualify for the semis "UNLIKE INDIA".

India has already proved there point of being the team to be challenged by any other team which thinks are playing to their strength and will be able to possess any difficulty for the Men In Blue...

As an Indian supporter my support unconditionally is with Dhoni's men and specially with the form we are in, It really does not matter if it is SL or Kiwis or WI or Pak...

May the best team come to India in semis and a better team comes to final so that we can see at least one thrilling match of India where India has a close finish at least and not winning convincingly like we have done for previous matches.

Some thrill and excitement will fire up the event and will get a perfect finish for the world tournament.

You said "All indian fans are wishing and hoping NZ to win this. Bcos they know that they cant win against SL in semis or finals.(scared after asia cup and warm-up match)"

I can only pity this comment given warm-up match is for warm up and not considered to be aimed at winning. Moreover even in Asia cup, India lost those 2 games very tightly without Dhoni, Yuvi.

This Indian team will beat us in any format as of today.

I am very surprised by Martin Crowe's and Daryl Culinan's comments "Malinga captaining gives NZ edge"! Are they being blind or they are saying what they wishing to happen?

India only just became #1 in ranking just after winning few games in a row after long time. Sri Lanka has been the #1 team for some time and rarely lost a game. What is the New Zealand's T20 ranking?

ICC Twenty20 Ranking Team Matches Points Rating India 23 2475 130 Sri Lanka 29 3209 128 Pakistan 43 4007 121 South Africa 35 3462 119 West Indies 32 3053 113 Australia 34 3079 110 New Zealand 32 2813 108 England 37 3119 104

Fact is that Malinga is getting the honour of captaining the SL team will boost his confident and desire to win! Agree with his lack of experience in captaining the side but 4 world class former captains in the team helping him, Malinga can just relax. He will be just a figurehead with full of confident to do what he does even better!

All will be revealed to night!

The reasons why SL will beat NZ...

1. Kusal Perera is best batsmen in the world leaving Warner/Amla/Hales behind.

2. Legends like Sanga, Mahela are better than Sir Don & Sir Gary

3. Kula/Slinga?thisu better than Styen/Johnson/Gul on any day

4. Mendis/Sena/Herath are better than Ajmal/Narine/Warne/any spinner in the world.

5. Team NZ is too mediocre to reach semis of the tournament

6. With every win SL is showing how dominant outfit they have.

7. SL believe in clinical performances.

8. Reaching knock out stage in the world cups is our trends.

9. Thiri/Chandi/Angi/Kusal are much better batsmen than Brendon Mac/Kohli/SRT/AB/Clerk on any day.

10. NZ are champion on only hexagonal 50 mtrs ground. If they tour outside their nation, BD/NED/ZIM/Afgan can beat then comprehensively.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 5:28 GMT)

"Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will absurdly have had their XI boosted by their captain's suspension" - its so obvious that it is blatantly published - but selectors don't take any notice - At least Chandimal himself should take notice!!

@kazun1 - you are right - we may need to sacrifice one batter because we are one quality bowler short since the all rounders - Tissara and Angelo don't always deliver the bowling performace that they should be delivering -The batsman to make way should be Dilshan in place of lahiru (who is also not T20 material, but way better than Dilshan - Chandimal's place should be given to either lakmar or seeku deending on the pitch - seeku will give the team a pinch hitting option if Kusal fails o fire.

1Kusal 2Mahela 3Sanga 4Thiir 5Angelo 6.Tissara 7.Seeku 8.Nuwa 9.Sachithra 10. Herath/Lakml 11. Malinga - gives more bowling options with batting depth

Posted by cjchanaka on (March 31, 2014, 5:28 GMT)

I have already known NZ will be the toughest side to beat in our group even before top ten matches start. Now this has become do or die situation. The conditions of venue is totally rubbish. We can't expect best from players under these conditions. But we have no options as malinga said.I think both herath & prasanna should play because thisara is not in good rhythem as a bowler.Anyway good luck for both teams.NZ is my favourite after LIONS..............

Posted by King_Ravanaa on (March 31, 2014, 5:23 GMT)

Well Well Well, i am not too surprised to see Indians wishing NZ win here. India would be really happy to play against teams like SA and NZ rather than playing against champion team like SL, if SL came to play them, India knows their so called spinners will thrashed all over the park by lions. and their houses are under immense danger. anyway SL gonna win today, with their pure effort and courage. and guess what astrological predictions(by Indians) too favor in SL

Think about what would happens to team like India if they play in this sort of conditions with so much dew around, even Netherlands will score 200+ runs against India ha ha ha

Posted by aruna260 on (March 31, 2014, 5:19 GMT)

This tournament is absolutely unfair for Group 1 teams, group 2 teams are already well acclimatised with conditions in Mirpur where the semi finals and finals are played. Group 1 are also hampered with the Dew and faulty flood lights in Chittagong. I am sure the finals will be played by the two teams qualifying from Group 2.

@Rajesh.Kumar... Sri Lankan are intelligent and brave enough to understand there will be wins as well as losses in game of cricket. after all it is just a game. Unlike our neighbors we newer burnt or throw stones at our players houses. lol

BTW i will be here after the Sri Lankan win, will you be here? just because weak team like India, had some fluke wins doesn't make them better than teams like SL, Aus, SA, or NZ, accept my challenge, be here with your comments buddy

@ Mohd.Riaz21- If finals is going to be IND Vs Pak as u think, then of course IND is going to win the cup..We can still remember IND -PAK match..ha ha ha..First try to win WI match and then come..

Wow so many indians are praising for NZ team to win probably coz NZ beat india :P I think SL will win this.

I cant understand why Indian fans want NZ to win this match..if SL is weaker, then cheer for them and then you can easily win finals...ha ha..Everyone know the reality but dont want to express here..SL,such a small country in the world having 20 millions of people becoming stronger day by day...accept the truth my friends..

Posted by Htc-Android on (March 31, 2014, 5:01 GMT)

Sri lanka have themselves to blame to be in this situation. First they appointed Chandimal as the captain for this world cup. Then they are asking Malinga to captain the team in a must win game. I wouldnt be surprised if we lose to NZ tomorrow. Anyway Malinga should take his time and make the right decision in tight situation. I hope everything goes right for us Tomorrow. Hopefully we will win tomorrow.

Posted by katch47 on (March 31, 2014, 5:00 GMT)

NZ is the favorites, Sri Lankans are not known to perform well under pressure, they lost their captain, players have to rally under the new captain who is not known for his leadership capabilities, their bowlers have been trashed to all parts of the ground in the last match and their confidence is blown so their batsmen have to do some extra effort to put up a challenging score.....and I hope I'm wrong

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 5:00 GMT)

Go Black Caps!!!! A good summer season with tasty wins against India and Windies topped off with some spicy Sri Lankans. Go hard, go strong Kiwis. Let's do it!

Posted by BandaraUSA on (March 31, 2014, 4:59 GMT)

Sri Lanka as a team is very powerful. They have proved in the series. Who ever in the captaincy and who make very biased and immature comments Sri Lanka is going to win this match and go to the semi finals. Yes captain place a crucial role. But performances of the team is the key. So Sri Lanka, India are definitely in the semi finals.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 4:59 GMT)

first win against nz ..then dream winning the final.. I think nz win today

Posted by Ravinducool82 on (March 31, 2014, 4:57 GMT)

C'mon IND friends..dont be so silly when analysing..someone says SL has the weakest bowling attack..If India come to finals lets see..but I think SA will play with SL in finals..

Posted by kazun1 on (March 31, 2014, 4:54 GMT)

Replacing Thirimanne for Chandimal is a bad choice. what Sri Lanka should do is select two from Herath, Lakmal, Prasanna as replacements for Chandimal and Mendis. We have enough batsmen and all-rounders who can bat for 20 overs. What we need is a decent economical bowler. We can not afford to ball expensive overs because it would release the pressure other bowlers create and hence reduce the opportunities.

Kusal, Dilshan, Mahela, Sanga, Mathews, Thisara, Kula, Seananayaka, Herath, Mali, Lakmal.

Both Mathews and Perera are too expensive as part time bowlers. Therefore we need 5 bowlers in the squad. Otherwise it will cost this match for Sri Lanka to learn that same as It cost the last match to learn Mendis is too expensive and totally useless in the current conditions.

It is pathetic that Sri Lankan selectors don't understand the game. This isn't a 50 overs match. So they should know too many batsmen are useless in this format. Some batsmen may not get a chance to bat.

Posted by SL.FOOLS on (March 31, 2014, 4:52 GMT)

A Massive thrashing on the cards for us but as we read the comments, we already have enough excuses ready. One thing I can guarantee that when SL will be losing Sanga will appeal for everything, and we will have 5 min. conferences after every bowl. Chandimal the greatest captain is not playing, he always leads the way for us with his breathtaking display of batting. Whopping S/R of 93. Great team.

Posted by Liyanage.1283 on (March 31, 2014, 4:49 GMT)

The first line "Widely tipped to be the sides to progress from the ''easy'' group" That sums it all ... Even after being in the easier of groups and among weak spin playing teams, Srilanka is finding it tough to reach to next level. IMHO, its gonna be a India vs pak finals.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 4:46 GMT)

Oops!!! I meant to say, if we win the toss and BOWL first... sorry! LOLZ... just imagine...

Posted by akramk on (March 31, 2014, 4:46 GMT)

I think NZ will lose this one. They haven't been playing to their potential recently, and I don't expect them to now. Further, SL have been having luck on their side too.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 4:44 GMT)

Sri lanka Will surely win this because there is no Dinesh Chandimal... Better he stay away all the matches too.. He is really useless player. not worth as a batsman, bowler, fielder or captain. He did nothing in past games.

Posted by TEROSHAN on (March 31, 2014, 4:44 GMT)

Who ever win today will win the World Cup ... Both team are deserve it But NZ are more comfortable with Batters and bowlers... For SL - Sekkuge and Sachithra will be crucial . For NZ It is BC & RT..

Posted by Chn2 on (March 31, 2014, 4:43 GMT)

It will be a nice battle and Newzealand will come out winner.

Posted by Cricgeek213 on (March 31, 2014, 4:42 GMT)

@Rajesh.Kumar Before the tournament started Srilanka was the best team in t20 according to the t20 ICC rankings and now they are the 2nd. So yes they are a strong team Get your facts right. I guess indians don't want to repeat the asia cup defeat so they are hoping NZ to win. Best of luck to SL. MAY THE BETTER TEAM WIN.

Posted by Nuwas on (March 31, 2014, 4:42 GMT)

there's no point in arguing here about anything else, whoever wins the toss & elected to bat first will win the match, its just as simple as that. Too bad ICC just let this happen, who wants such toss oriented matches to watch? ICC should consider these kind of venues before hand to be omitted or the matches on such grounds should be held in the morning & afternoon sessions. This is unhealthy for the competitions.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 4:36 GMT)

@Ravinducool: SL won Asia cup because of Sanga's brilliance and some wicket keeping lapses from India . I think it will be a totally different ball game in WT20. India have been flawless and SL has failed to defend a huge total in conditions that favor their bowling attack. But having said this, I think we can never predict what can happen since things can change in 2 overs But to say that India is scared is quite funny.

Posted by BDrox11 on (March 31, 2014, 4:35 GMT)

Time to rise again Lion boys, its time to win the title this time, ending bad fate we had in last 5 years, step up to the challenge and do it for Sri Lanka

Posted by Rajesh.Kumar on (March 31, 2014, 4:31 GMT)

I am glad that SL fans have realized that their team has a good chance of losing this one. Of course, Cricket being a game of glorious uncertainties, any team can defeat any team on a given day. But Kiwis have a very strong team, and it will be a good if they maintain their performance and defeat this weak SL team. If that happens, semis will become exciting.

Posted by kc69 on (March 31, 2014, 4:30 GMT)

There will be difference in morale of both teams as on paper SL seem to be favourite but the ground reality is that they are coming from a inflicting loss and with a inexperienced captain. On the other hand NZ did lose a close one earlier but their morale will be high with their batsmen in form. All they need is their bowlers to come to party.

Posted by Ravinducool82 on (March 31, 2014, 4:30 GMT)

IND got hammered by NZ very recently..bcos of that many IN fans think that NZ going to win this..SL team is much much better than IND and dont look this match in same angle..if it is IND-NZ , of course NZ WILL WIN..

Oh Come on, is this a challenge to SL?, didn't we come up with a greater challenges than this? SL is one of the favorite to win this title, and one Fluke from one player Hales to bring victory to England doesn't take anything away from SL. Keep your heads up people we gonna win this definitely without any doubt. Defeat to Eng is good thing, it should make SL to come up with good tactics and strategies, do you guys really think that our boys gonna do it like the last match?? they gonna come up with a good match, see you all after SL's win cheers, go LIONS GO.. BTW, India is such a pathetic team, who will got beaten by SA

Lahiru Thirimanne is not the 20/20 player. Srilanka has got better players than him. Very slow player in 20/20. They should have given choice to him in such an important match. Poor Sri lankan selection

Posted by Mohammed_Syed_Indian on (March 31, 2014, 4:06 GMT)

Sri Lanka are a brilliantly consistent team off day against Eng doesnt mean they have lost their grip!! Semis from Group 1 will be Sri Lanka & SA!!

Posted by alipk52 on (March 31, 2014, 3:59 GMT)

Who will play West Indies or Pakistan in semis? lets decide this tonight, other is done now, it'll be India vs South Africa, because winner of this match will put South Africa in 2nd position in the group, they had very close games, that's why SA's NRR is very low, well nevertheless, I would want to see Pakistan vs India final, but it will not going to happen, coz Pakistan win against Windies looks unlikely, and this time South Africa will choke India out of the tournament!

Posted by Prabhash1985 on (March 31, 2014, 3:54 GMT)

I know one thing for sure. The pitch will definitely support New Zealand bowlers. It's prior knowledge that Sri Lanka is hammered by ICC.

Posted by cooljack_143 on (March 31, 2014, 3:41 GMT)

When they have 3 CAPTAINS in the side who in the world will pick MALINGA as Captain. You got to be kidding to make such a drastic change in the semifinal.Well selectors might have thought He can always rely on the other 3 for decisions but fold this is T20 & Decisions need to be made quickly. If they start having round table conference in middle of the match,Dejavu for Malinga like chandimal. You dont want your best player to be suspended for a crunch game if at all SL qualifies to semis. This is not the way to say adieu to your 2 legends. What ever it is decision has been made & u have to live with it. GL to both teams.

Posted by ajithabey on (March 31, 2014, 3:38 GMT)

Well it's going to be tough for SL to get through this game as the Kiwis too are playing to potential. It is a blessing in disguise that Chandimal has to sit out this game providing Thirimanne a chance to play and cement his place in the team. It is also imperative that SL should have the right bowling combination and I will go with experienced Herath or Lakmal to strengthen the bowling dept at the expense of thisara perera and mendis.

Posted by Rajesh.Kumar on (March 31, 2014, 3:17 GMT)

I wish all the best to Kiwis, who I hope will win. SL is not a strong team and, therefore, will not provide exciting cricket in the semis. Hoping for a India-SA or India-WI final.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 3:03 GMT)

This is the hardest match SL has in this in SL point of view it was a big mistake to make it a must win match..NZ team is not one whom we beat and beat in past..they have power hitters, experienced ones..overall it was a very good team who even can grab the cup this SLs' chances are very narrow here..hope one of lions does what hales did to us and make our path clear..

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 2:52 GMT)

NZ are in a really unusual position. Their batsmen are currently propping up mostly mediocre bowling performances. How odd. SL have been a bit of a bogey team for NZ in 50 overs format, though that was no doubt in large part to the impact of Malinga and Murali. Herath and Mendis also caused our batsmen no end of hurt. If the conditions do not favour slower pace, I have no doubt that the batsmen (Taylor and McCullum in particular), now relatively experienced in dealing with the likes of Malinga will comfortably put a very competitive score on the board.

Williamson should NOT be bowled under any circumstances. I'd like to see Mclenaghan make a strong impact this time.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 2:44 GMT)

If there is no dew, Herath could be the difference. But who are NZ's reliable death bowlers in these conditions ?

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 2:43 GMT)

why icc not takeing action regardingstarting time ...they can start matches 2 h early's definitely unfair for who bowling 2nd ..and this is major tournament ...

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 2:29 GMT)

I think NZ should win this match..If SL Bowled first then we have a chance but not sure this time.

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 2:27 GMT)

This should be the first match surely? I have to watch this (and will be) at 2.30am in New Zealand!? Ouch... I guess if we win the toss and bat first though, I will be stoked we did play the night game but it does put a lot on the toss result. The Black Caps are due versus Sri lanka and are a better team than they were just a year ago... but, we will need to play well. Interesting if they think that Southee will lift or whether they will keep Boult (who is not traditionally good at t20 or white bowl bowling comparatively).. tough selection. The rest of the team is EASY to pick and it is a pity Neesham did not play till last match as we would have got past South Africa with the right team. Ah well, that is history now, so we must lift, play hard and with self-belief and calmness and bring this puppy home! Go Kiwi! 8-)

Posted by   on (March 31, 2014, 2:19 GMT)

I don't want to see sri lanka in semis bcoz if they reach in semis, then there will a huge possibility of india-sri lanka final.i don't want to see the same story of 2011wc,so today my vote for nz,and world cup is surely for india.

Posted by Haiderpakawsome on (March 31, 2014, 1:33 GMT)

It appears that many SL fans have already started preparing excuses such as dew, No Chandimal and all for much anticipated loss. They should instead learn from Pakistan bowlers how to handle with dew. On yesteday's match Bangladesh batted with their best performance in their T20 history. But still fell massively short to the target that Pak had set. The credit to the Pak bowlers who can perform irrespective of the conditions instead of bringing forward the excuses.

Posted by bobbo2 on (March 31, 2014, 1:18 GMT)

Hope dew does not decide this match. Madness that a WC has this as such as issue - perhaps other times when there is less dew would have worked better.

That said, many teams batting first are winning so I'm happy if NZ bat first and put on a good score.

Posted by chandimasl on (March 31, 2014, 0:14 GMT)

It's a very important match for both teams.howevet the changes which are going to made to sl team is should bring in prasanna and herath in spin friendly.pitch.

Selectors should make a firm decesion to keep dilshan or not.but it can not afford to replace chandimal with thiri.because if we have to ball 2nd the dew factor will make it difficult for the bowlers.therefore having an all rounder will be ideal.

Nz top order is in very good was able to defend their total against eng because of good even if we ball 2nd,having a good plan will make it harder for nz.

Wish all the very best to lions.

Posted by wazza85 on (March 31, 2014, 0:01 GMT)

It is true winning the toss and fielding first increases your chances of winning. But what do you do if you lose the toss? This is T20, both teams are evenly matched, although SL holds the edge slightly with Thiri coming in. England lost to SA at the same venue batting second. Because SA bowled well. It all comes down to how well SL bowl if they lose the toss.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 23:54 GMT)

Malinga's probably going to get a 5 wicket haul. I completely disagree with the analysts. It's a vote of confidence if anything and should do Lasith well. I look for Sri lanka to score above 200 runs.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 23:52 GMT)

I have a very bad feeling about this match. Are Sri Lanka losing steam at the wrong end of the tournament? But then again I've known to have had incorrect 'bad feelings' before.... I sure hope this time too!

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 23:03 GMT)

Look lanka is definitely a good side so is new zealand but the toss will be crucial people like corey j and jimmy nisham haven't seen mendis at all and on top of that just because mendis had one bad game doesn't mean we can drop him. For example the previous t20 world cup malinga got flogged for 70 runs but it didn't mean that he got dropped the next match, anyways gl to the lions hope they win!!!

Posted by Gamaraala on (March 30, 2014, 22:52 GMT)

I want SL to win this, but wouldn't hate to see a good performance by NZ to beat us to semis.

We should have tried Herath much earlier in the tournament. And Chandimal's omission might be a blessing in disguise.

Go Lions.

Posted by cric4ind on (March 30, 2014, 22:38 GMT)

Agreeing to the fact that the dew factor does make a difference, i would also like to say that it is also very overrated. The fact of the matter is that win/loss boils down to the captain's on field mentality and how he utilizes his resources the best example of which is the most recently concluded India Aus match. Take it or leave it MS is walking away with the cup. As for this match may the best team win.

Sri Lanka is under a huge pressure so their poor bowling could be exposed .they were lucky vs SA in the first match .New Zealand can beat them if they bat second .easily .........

Posted by Remocity on (March 30, 2014, 20:53 GMT)

Can't say who will win but my all thoughts are with Srilanka to win and qualify for the semis and get back to top ranking..... NZ not a easy team to beat recently they are in a good forms thanks to India loosing all matches against them.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 20:48 GMT)

SL should play Lakmal for Chandimal. Batting has enough depth to last the overs. It's the bowling which needs to come good. Herath should replace Mendis. Most of the eams have lost due to poor fielding in this tournament. If SL take their catchers, they should win.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 20:44 GMT)

Both teams are unpredictable, and this is T20. you can't really tell who is gonna win, until the very last ball is bowled. I think sri lanka has a slight edge here, by having won all the knockout games in world cups against New zealand, Sri lankan team should be confident. as a Sri Lankan, I hope we win! cheers!!!

Who's is this brilliant idea of appointing Malinga as Captain for this sudden -death game? We have 4 experienced Captains in the side and yet they elevated Malinga who has never Captained any game prior to this to lead the team. What a joke? Only SLC will do something like this.

There is stark difference in conditions and nature of pitches between Chittagong and Mirpur. It appears matches of two groups are taking place on separate continents. Those playing in group 2 are already acclimatized with the conditions for semi finals and final. This is unfair.

If SL bat first then there is less hope, if they bat 2nd, they can pull it off.... on the other hand if NZ bat first and post close to 200 like wht SA did (which they are very capable of with the kind of batting line up they have), then SL will falter under pressure - apart from Mathews who can take the score board pressure and still go for the big shots w/o breaking a sweat, I dont see the SL team chasing 200! - An honest neutral opinion!

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 18:06 GMT)

I almost agree with what @CricketFirst has mentioned.. This is 20/20, so players like Thisara, Kula and Senanayake r more than enough to fill a batsman's slot in playing 11 ( Chandimal isn't suited at all for T20.. he needs to correct his batting techniques first ! ) . So for the suspended chandimal's slot they could bring in a quick bowler like lakmal or a leg spinner Sekkuge Prasanna.. Replacing Mendis with Herath is a must ...

Last game SL lost bcoz they were short of about 15-25 runs (may be due to the slow batting of Dili but hope he found his form at least ! ) and lack of bowling options/variations....

Sri Lanka point of view better got suspension for Chandimal because he didn't came his own performance and team can add one more batsman or bowler good advantage but let's see how it will use our team !best of luck !cheers

Sadly for lions, i think NZ will win :(

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 17:48 GMT)

As Chittagong hasn't assisted spinners so far, bringing in Lakmal for Chandimal might be a good option, as Sri Lanka can cope with the batsmen they have. Herath should definitely play for Mendis.

Whichever combination it may be, hopefully, it will work on the day!!

It's really annoying and frustrating that the team that wins the toss wins the match. Do they HAVE to play at night??? "Tosses win matches" in Chittagong! :D Might as well just do the toss and leave. Starting the matches a couple of hours earlier would be better but wouldn't make a massive difference. Also, the lights at Chittagong further delay the match. Lights have gone off five times so far!!

Thirimanne will obviously replace Chandimal. Dilshan is still not playing anywhere near his best, wasting balls and time, but will open with Kusal; Thiri should come in third.

Thiri is a traditional player and not a slogger, so best if he comes in 3rd, followed by Mahela (who's not a slogger but still has an excellent strike rate) and Sanga (then again, Sanga is the more experienced and cleverer version of Thiri!!). Angelo, Thisara, Kula, Sena should follow.

I think it's clear to everyone, most importantly to SLC, that Mendis shouldn't play - Herath should replace him.

Good luck, Lions! :)

I hope that top ranked 4 teams will play in semis

This will be a close game honestly. SL fans think they will ace this game but that's not going to be the case. I expect a last over finish here. Both teams are strong with good bowling and batting. However, there are a few areas both teams are good in; for NZ it's their remarkable fielding cum batting and for SL it's their spinners and Malinga. A mouth watering contest for a neutral like myself. Bring it on and may the best team win.

SL MUST replace Mendis with Herath and Chandimal's place should go to Lakmal. We have enough players to bat out 20 overs but highly short on bowling depth. SL lost many finals bcoz they become too predictable at the back end of the tournament and relied on one or two bowlers to take wickets. So learn from past mistakes.

Mendis won't trouble good teams anymore but Herath can bowl economically and take wickets in middle overs. Anjelo, Kula & Thisara don't have the pace to trouble batsmen in the latter part of the innings. Kula did well in the last two games but can't expect that in every game. We need Lakmal to support Malinga coz he can take wickets and can bowl yokers in the final overs.

Team for NZ game should be 1) Perera 2) Dilshan 3) Mahela 4) Sanga 5) Angelo 6) Thisara 7) Kula 8) Sachi 9) Herath 10) Lakmal 11) Malinga

Why the big ICC do not consider about dew factor in night matches. It is unfair for the team loosing the toss. The starting time could be advanced by 2 hours

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 16:19 GMT)

NZ you know when we come face to face it doesn't go well for you guys..Prepare for your sudden death. You have nowhere to hide, we are coming for you..Waiting for the death

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 16:07 GMT)

its sad that dew is playing such a big part of a world cup. Sri Lanka still should do well and get the win ! have a strong team. Thissara's bowling is a concern and Dilshans batting

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 15:38 GMT)

Strange but no suspensions or fines on the rule that took Captain Chandimal out of the final match Vs NZ? Were there NO SLOW over rates since Chandimal's defaulting? Strange but true!! seems, "Changes made to the Goal Posts" SL cricket admirer..

SL XI: 1) KJP 2) Thiri 3) Mahela 4) Sanga 5) Dilshan 6) Mathews 7) Kula 8) Sena 9) Slinga 10) Herath 11) Lakmal

I agree with Omar, I would rather the tournament spread out over more days and have all day games. If its not the dew it's the substandard lights.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 15:29 GMT)

SL has more chance than NZ because of spinners. batting looks good from both sides.

in my opinion, they should have gone for Mathews as captain and free malinga of extra responsibility. he needs full focus on his main job.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 15:21 GMT)

presanna and hetath should play for mall snf mendi.mahela will help malinga.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 15:19 GMT)

on my view i think malinga can manage the things with ideas of mahela(best caption i ever seen) pressanna and herath shoild in playing 11.good luck sl.

new Zealander are favorite for this match

England identified mendis before the match as someone who can be taken for PLENTY. And they practised for that eventuality. Since WI Smith took him apart every team has got now this as a ploy against SL. Even SA took him for runs applying the same strategy but this was 'overlooked' I think because did not want to change a winning team. That was a mistake, the team should have had courage to drop him knowing the facts. Mendis has to bring something else to his armour before thinking of playing in the team again as every team will target him now. Probably it was a blessing in disguise that happened to mendis in the England game;had it happened in a semifinal or wishfully in the final we would have had it.

In Sha ALLAH... 1st win before next 2 wins for Srilanka... Come on Lions!!

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 15:00 GMT)

SL must include herath and prasanna

Posted by ksquared on (March 30, 2014, 14:59 GMT)

Chittagong so far has been realy dissapointing as a venue apart from the dew which has made bowlers canon fodder the constant problems with the light towers is really annoying for any team batting or fielding

Now tat my adopted country is out of the tournament, time to support the country of my birth. Go NZ!

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 14:42 GMT)

good luck sri lanka

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 14:38 GMT)

How unfortunate of cricket. For people to make lots of money they are making play in the night vth a wet ball thereby loading the chasing side vth unfair advantage. why not play in the day only.

Posted by jerryman on (March 30, 2014, 14:27 GMT)

SL must play herath instead of mendis . Prasanna must replace Chandimal as leg break bowlers like Mishra are doing well. Prefer to see Mahela open with Kusal in batting and must open bolwing with a spinner either dilshan or sena. Good luck lions . Must win game -do or die..

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 14:23 GMT)

Good luck Lions. Need to play agressively to win this match though.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 14:12 GMT)

there is no choice for both the teams other than winning the match to get qualified for the semi finals. I am pretty sure this contest is gonna be tough for both the teams and interesting..

Posted by wapuser on (March 30, 2014, 13:54 GMT)

Sri lanka will win this doubt about it.good luck boys.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 13:53 GMT)

i liked the icc punishment about chandimal. that will helps to add one more bowler or allrounder. but have to think about malingas capacity as a captain

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 13:52 GMT)

It is so disappointing that a big tournament like this is decided by non-cricket factor like dew. They should at least replace the ball after 10 overs in the second inning.

Posted by   on (March 30, 2014, 13:46 GMT)

The captain of the team fielding second need to make strategic plans, take wickets, win the game and in the mean time dry the ball and eventually will get fined for doing that.So might as well hand the victory to the team winning the toss because it's almost like playing in the rain whilst there's dew in chittagong.
