'Sri Lanka will be thinking about 2012 final' - Sammy

Darren Sammy does not think West Indies have an edge going into their World T20 semi-final against Sri Lanka because of what happened in the final of the previous edition. Sri Lanka had tied down the West Indies batsmen completely for more than half of their innings in Colombo before Marlon Samuels' counter-attack lifted his side to a title-winning score. Sammy felt, however, that the incidents of that night would be in the minds of the Sri Lankans.

"Cricket is not about what happens before," Sammy said. "It's (about) what happens on a cricket field on that present day. We defeated them in the World Cup (2012 final) and in the practice game here but they have played some good cricket and we have a lot of respect for them.

"Last final will be at the back of their mind, the practice game will be at the back of their mind. Once West Indies turn up, West Indies are dangerous."

No team has successfully defended the World T20 title before, but Sammy said West Indies were confident they could become the first side to do so.

"When we left the Caribbean, we had that as the motivation factor for us," he said. "In the last World Cup, the mantra was one team, one goal and the mission was to win the World Cup. This year the mantra is the same: One team, one goal, but the mission is to retain the title. It's something that no team has done before and we are very confident that we can do it.

"Once we play the brand of cricket that we played in the last three games, there is every possibility that we can do it. We have been peaking at the right times (and) doing some good things with our team spirit and our never-say-die attitude. Hopefully, that will be contagious. Hopefully, we have another good semi-final like we did in the last World Cup (against Australia)."

When asked about Rangana Herath's astonishing return of 5 for 3 against New Zealand, Sammy said it was offspinners who had troubled West Indies. "The off-spinners are the ones who have got wickets against us so we don't mind their left-arm-spinner," he said. "Hopefully, we don't play him as the New Zealanders did. We know what we are going to come across or against, but this bunch of guys in the dressing room are very confident even when everything seems gloomy."

Whats happening? SL winning the toss again, gotta say no one has run into so much luck ever. But WI seems to be playing with character and still giving them a hard time. Great attitude from Sammy and co.

West Indies celebrated one of their rare victories aganst Australia last week as if they had already won the 2014 T20 World Cup throwing their bats in the air and Gayle doing the "Gangnam Star. Well they should be excused for that because their emotions were very hgh and out of control because they have been on the receiving end against Australia for over 20 years losing all their test and ODI's to the aussies since 1995. Since T20 cricket was introduced very recently they have hardly met. It is good to see the Windies making a comeback atleast in T20 cricket having beaten Australia at the last minute to make it to the semi final stage. They go as one of the firm favourites once again to win the World Cup for a second consecutive time. They are a well balanced side and have some big hitters which can hurt the opposition immnsely.

letz c wat happens. i go with Sri lanka

Posted by vkumar_086 on (April 3, 2014, 11:29 GMT)

@hail_sarcasm...well said dear, justice should be equal for all...my heart and mind is with WI in todays match, in their current form, they are just unstoppable at the moment, its all due to Faulkner effect...lets see what happens

Posted by vkumar_086 on (April 3, 2014, 11:15 GMT)

SL should concentrate on this match first...after they can think about taking revenge on India in finals....on seeing stats, WI clearly having advantage over SL, as their batting and bowling is strong, in fact they bat very deep unlike SL...they will play with free mind, whereas SL players will play with revenge in mind....so WI are favourite here to face India in finals...ATB for both teams

Posted by India_boy on (April 3, 2014, 11:07 GMT)

@nishara silva...right good sir, because winning CB series in Aus, Idea Cup in WI, penultimate Asia cup in SL, CT in Eng, 2007 T20 WC in SA won't count because they are all "home grounds" for India. Oh wait we also beat you 4-1 in another Indian home ground called Sri Lanka. And i'm only talking about the finals, pardon me for missing out on all the times we have beaten SL in semis and other matches. cricinfo pls publish.

Dear "India_boy" please don't over estimate the Indians.before you think about the final try to score at least 100 against SA in 2nd Semi Final,Because this is not Indian's Home. They are only Home Heros..

Posted by hail_sarcasm on (April 3, 2014, 9:40 GMT)

Excuses allowed- WI beat SL in warm up game and Malinga didn't play that game. Excuses not allowed- SL beat Ind in warm up game where Kohli batted @ 8 and Dhoni didn't bat.

This sound perfectly logical and unbiased to me!!!!!!!!

Mind Games !! Already Started

Posted by sachin_vvsfan on (April 3, 2014, 9:07 GMT)

SL won convincingly despite scoring less than 120 against NZ. No body can predict the winners here. It is going to be Sl spin vs WI brute force

@India_boy Boy you are funny!!.

@ LIONS and Thar1ndu why u forget the conditions of lankans cat in front of India during last 5 years. How much revenge they r able to take WC@2011 CT@2013 Idea Cup@2013 WI ASIA CUP @ 2010 2012

Posted by India_boy on (April 3, 2014, 6:18 GMT)

This should be an India-WI final simply to show SL how to beat WI in a final, or to beat any team in the finals ;)

Posted by LegendayKohli on (April 3, 2014, 6:13 GMT)

It will be a close match up between the two teams to beat in the tournament. Even though India has won all of its matches it has had favorable conditions through out and Dhoni has won most of his tosses, like he usually does. Looking forward to a semi-final worth its name.

Posted by Swiss2010 on (April 3, 2014, 6:02 GMT)

if SL can take Sammy and Bravo, then we have game

Posted by sreehk on (April 3, 2014, 4:48 GMT)

Team to team both look equally balanced. Both go in with equal momentum WI crushing Pak and SL thrashing NZ. It will be a great spin contest between both teams. However WI hold slight edge in batting in terms of fire power, with one of Gayle or Samuels yet to explode. I am rooting for WI to win given their flair and flamboyance. If WI bat first and score anything above 150, they will win. If SL bat first and score anything above 160, they will win.

Posted by Rahul_78 on (April 3, 2014, 4:45 GMT)

I still think Spin friendly conditions will suit Lanka more then WI. In Mahela, Sangga, Dilshan and Mathews Lanka has ample class and experience to counter WI spinners. In all probability this is going to be a low scoring affair and WI is known to struggle against quality spin bowling. In Malinga they have one of the best in business and Herath was exceptional against NZ. On the other hand if Lanka has the batsmen to handle Narine better. Lanka will not give any pace at all to WI big hitters to go for the big shots. It is unfortunate for Lanka that Chandimal is out of form and is not sure about his place in XI. If they had someone like Mahela or Sangga captaining them they would have gone in with much better mindset. If anything this captaincy conundrum might come to haunt them in 2 knock out games.

Lions..It's "revenge-time"..Windies..feel for you..Big talks will ultimately go in vain..India..please defeat Saffas (I doubt it though)..But please..cz Lions are waiting to get their revenge..It's show time here in BD

Sorry sammy,You have to go home after this semifinal.SL will teach over confident sammy and boasting WI team a good lesson.Good luck SL.

All are trying to be pundits by commenting what comes to mind, what ever said and done it will be the toss who will decide the winner

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 3:12 GMT)

why not. 2012 SL were unbeaten to the final like india this time. SL reminds it indeed. thats why SL players and Rusel are not speaking big talk like india do. let sri lanka play the semi. and will think about the finals if we win this . All the best to my country sri lanka.

My team for today 1.TM Dilshan 2.KJ Perera 3.Mahela 4.Sanga 5.Prasanna 6.Mathews 7. T.Perera 8.Sachithra   9.kulasekara 10. Herath  11. Malinga

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 0:56 GMT)

@Np_NY: asia cup was played amonst 3 of the strongest teams in world cricket so it really cant be insignificant. and talking about world championships, dont forget that srilanka came to the finals of the world cup in the last 2 consecutive years.. its all a part of the game to intimidate each other but what matters is the performance on that day..

Posted by PakSelectorsRbad on (April 3, 2014, 0:30 GMT)

SL is going to win...They play with responsibility.....WI at times are lazy and can take things easy...If WI focus and played with true cricket intensity..game is going to be very good

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (April 3, 2014, 0:17 GMT)

It seems all the SL fans have skipped reading the article and instead decided to comment emotionally. Cool down guys. All Sammy is saying is that SL could be thinking about the 2012 final. He didn't say his team can easily beat SL. Sammy is a gentleman, unlike Mathews who spoke a bit poorly about BD team recently. WI are known for playing with flair and good spirit. I wish them all the very best against a good SL team.

Posted by MH19 on (April 3, 2014, 0:16 GMT)

Mate sadly mistaken SL will show tonight what they are capable of and will prove that theeir lost in 2012 due to bad batting and today the past is not repeated and will ensure WI will pack their bags home

Posted by Temuzin on (April 2, 2014, 23:19 GMT)

It doesn't matter much which team is winning this match. Ultimately they will lose to India in the final. Enjoy till then..

Posted by toucheandsuch on (April 2, 2014, 22:59 GMT)

Despite the thrashing he from England, I would pick Mendis instead of Thisara and probably open with Mathews & Senanayake. I think it would also make sense to drop Kusala and bring in Thirimanne at the top. That would mean the SL batting ends at # 7 but it also means they can restrict WI when they bowl. WI will probably make no changes but I think Sammy needs to surprise SL by opening with Santokie & Russell. That way the change of pace will be quite a bit and not easy to handle for SL. Badree will also be less of a factor against SL. This is a 50-50 match now but unlikely to end up with a close finish!!

Posted by jahrasta on (April 2, 2014, 22:55 GMT)

Don't understand why ppl are saying he is overconfident i saw no evidence of that, as a West Indian and a cricket superfan SL are never to be underestimated, no matter what format or which captain they use. With the retirement of two of the greats after this tournament I look forward to seeing a fired up SL team vying for the finals!! Good luck to both teams.

Posted by   on (April 2, 2014, 22:02 GMT)

dear sammy.please dont underastimate lions.you will get the correct answer by tonight..

Posted by CricketAficionado on (April 2, 2014, 21:42 GMT)

@SL Fans, Sammy is not overconfident. He clearly said that WI doen't have an edge over SL. Don't you guys read the article properly? He felt that the incident of 2012 final night would be on sl payers minds. Of course it would be, if somebody says it's not then they must surely be lying. I'm sure SL has kept that in mind n prepared to give counter attack if they find themselves in similar situation in today's game as they did in 2012. I don't see any arrogance in his comment. The only way SL can win this match is bat first n put competitive score on board n use malinga and herath to stifle WI. If WI wins the toss n bats first then SL has to shut the shop.

Posted by   on (April 2, 2014, 21:07 GMT)

Well spoken Sammy. You sounded confident and spoke complete senses. Spot on!

Posted by __PK on (April 2, 2014, 21:04 GMT)

Htc-Android, they're the current world champs. Until you can beat them, it's not the past, it's the present.

Posted by Abhijeth_Manohar on (April 2, 2014, 20:53 GMT)

This is Sangakara & Jayawardene's last T20 matches. Malinga & Kulasekara are also on their last legs. This is gonna be Sri Lanka's match fo sho. Teams have been winning through strategy and precision. But WI is just going in guns blazing. Not gonna work especially after SL's last match. Their players must be bursting with confidence right now. Can't wait to see KP (Kushal Perera) tear into the Windies attack and Malinga must be raring to go after the last match. Ohhhh....can't wait

Posted by Rit_Pats on (April 2, 2014, 20:14 GMT)

SriLanka is a good team not a great team.. They do well on Asian pitches..To be a great team one should be able to win Test/ODI/T20 home and away.. But like other sub-continent teams, their fans love to live and breath in a dream world.. !

Posted by MunafAhmed811 on (April 2, 2014, 20:08 GMT)

I think SL fans are overreacting here. Sammy just said Herath could be handled. Or is that not possible?????Besides he said SL will be thinking of 2012 match....So ask yourself fans..Is that defeat not on your mind? If it is on your mind will the SL team not be thinking of it....

Posted by Balumekka on (April 2, 2014, 20:06 GMT)

I think Sammy is boosting SL moral here.

Posted by Ranjit_sourav on (April 2, 2014, 19:59 GMT)

Just noticing these Lankan team for the past 4-5 years , They are getting in to an easy pool for their league matches in all world championships and qualify to knock out stages quite often. Thats the reason they couldnt able to win any big tournaments. Even people in Lanka were over excited about their Asia cup truimph, Come on Guys its not a world championship.Prove your mettle by winning world tournaments similar to what Ranatunga did 18 years back. Come on Windies, You guys are amazing .

Posted by rayinto on (April 2, 2014, 19:38 GMT)

Regardless of past results, West Indies would be hard to beat as they are peaking at the right time with both bat and ball.Sri Lank had the firepower to take them on - this is a semi final fitting of a final.

Posted by Herath-UK on (April 2, 2014, 19:24 GMT)

I think you are right here Sammy, you got it right for once;of course Sri Lanka are thinking of the 2012 final over & over TO avenge the defeat & send you packing home as a good return! I see you are scared by the look of it!

Posted by akramk on (April 2, 2014, 19:08 GMT)

This is going to be very tough for SL. I hope they have enough luck to pass through this stage. And judging by their past matches in this tournament (and the previous tournament too), they may get that extra fillip. They already got an easy opponent. Had WI did not come this far, SL would be busy packing up their bags by now hehe ;).

Posted by IndianFromBothellWA on (April 2, 2014, 18:06 GMT)

Sammy is not over confident. What says is right. Even at the start he did mention that he has a lot of respect for the SL Cricket & Cricketers. Let us just enjoy cricket.

Posted by anoop3301 on (April 2, 2014, 17:41 GMT)

Sammy is just telling plain truth. SL won Asia Cup recently however India was resting big guns like Dhoni. Teams like Ind and WI peak at the right time giving bridesmaids perennial nightmares for years.WI clear favorites for this match.

Posted by A-Gunnie on (April 2, 2014, 17:35 GMT)

Sammy...pls do not wake up the Lankans if you haven't done so already, you should know better and not play "that" game.Good Luck tomorrow.

Posted by mzm149 on (April 2, 2014, 17:23 GMT)

Come on Sri Lanka beat them. They defeated two of my favorite sides, i.e. Pakistan and Australia. LOL.

Its just a lottery specially when playing against hit and miss West Indian players.

Posted by LAKingsFan on (April 2, 2014, 17:21 GMT)

I think SL fans are overreacting here. Sammy was NOT over confident. He just told the truth. Any team can handle Hearth better, even associate nations, than NZ did. It's true. The same applies to Narine and Badree. SL can handle them better than Pak did. Given captaincy problems plaguing in SL dressing room I sense it's advantage WI. But it's a big boys league. Hope SL team/admin handle the captaincy issue amicably.I think both teams are equally matched ,otherwise. And,having played all group matches at Dhaka will help WI.

Posted by NP_NY on (April 2, 2014, 17:17 GMT)

@Lions_The_Asian_Champs: There are only three championships - the ODI world cup, the champions trophy and the T20 World cup. The Asia cup was insignificant, that's why India chose to rest the likes of Dhoni and Raina. SL is not a champion side because they have consistently failed in big matches in the WORLD STAGE, even at home. Hence the bridesmaids tag and Sammy knows it. Everyone remembers the gangnam dance in SL like it was yesterday :).

Posted by Htc-Android on (April 2, 2014, 17:13 GMT)

SL players never think about their past. They always move on from that and what's happening in the present. Sorry sammy, stop living in the past.

Posted by KeepingitReal on (April 2, 2014, 17:08 GMT)

Sammy said that they have a lot of respect for Sri Lanka, and that the recent victories over SL don't matter in this upcoming match. What is over-confident about that? Have you guys read the same article that I read?

Posted by Lakpj on (April 2, 2014, 17:05 GMT)

It seems that WI had forgotten that they were beaten 4 times by SL before that final, once in that same tournament too. In that warm up game both Prasanna and Herath had bowled well and both Malinga and Senanayake haven't bowled a single ball. So don't get too far ahead Sammy you could be in for some surprises.

Posted by Salobalay on (April 2, 2014, 17:03 GMT)

Mind games everywhere. As if Mourinho wasn't enough.

Posted by getamannage on (April 2, 2014, 16:40 GMT)

ooh..wi are talking too much.pls wi guys don't underestimate the power of sl.This will be your hugh defeat in icc wt20.

Posted by BigINDFan on (April 2, 2014, 16:40 GMT)

Sammy is just giving his opinion and is not over confident. He thinks his team can play Herath better than NZ, which is true. Anyone can play Herath better that NZ did the other night. Anyone can play Badree and Narine better than Pak did last night. It is good to hear Windies are confident and they should be after crushing Pak yesterday and given the slow lazy start to the tournament they have had. SL is definitely a better all round team than Windies but the key difference is the Windies batsmen can muscle sixers against any bowling. So it is not Herath that is the key for SL but it is Malinga. Malinga is very tough to get away with unless he loses his line. For Windies their top order is simply not consistent. This will be a close match but SL are clear favorites. One man who can take the game away is Gayle but he is struggling against all spinners so it evens the playing field.

Posted by SaraJahanSeAchha on (April 2, 2014, 16:09 GMT)

WI is no NZ and WI will give a far better response than NZ against spin. NZ also panicked just like Pak. WI players can also spin well. If you look at Hearath bowling there was nothing special about it, except straight wicket-to-wicket bowling. WI players certainly have the muscle power to hit successive sixers.

Posted by dilu.sanjay on (April 2, 2014, 15:57 GMT)

If sl can win the toss bat 1 st put runs on the bord. 160 plus then spammy might get answer for this

Posted by VK_MSD_IND_Champs on (April 2, 2014, 15:48 GMT)

Oh!Dear!Dear! Sammy is talking BIG and that is what you should never do specially against a champion team like Srilanka.I sense this over confidence will make them(WI) pay and it's pity to have such BIG comments coming out from a GREAT nation like Windies (which is so rare in history of the game). SL deserve this cup more than any nation due to the continuous performances they have shown in every ICC event recent years. LIONS WILL ROAR THIS TIME CZ THEY ARE THE ASIAN CHAMPS AND HUNGRY TO GRAB WHAT THEY DESERVE

Posted by KingOwl on (April 2, 2014, 15:37 GMT)

As a SL supporter, I must say that I like Sammy. He is a down to earth guy. So are most West Indians. I want SL to win. It will be tough on this type of wicket where raw power is needed to hit sixes - timing can be difficult for SL, especially having played elsewhere in the previous round. But if SL lose, I would want WI to go on and win the cup. But in this mood, if anybody can stop WI, it is SL and India, which can do the job.

Posted by   on (April 2, 2014, 15:30 GMT)

Looks like Sammy guy is already in Overconfident mood. Underestimating Sri Lanka, from all 5 T20 games played between these 2 countries SL won 4 while West Indies won 1. Warm Up game is just a warm up game, where even you lost will be used as a future encounters to learn about the opponent. Yes West Indies, under estimate SL as you are already over the Moon, we will hunt you even you won't notice it until you get beaten

Posted by nickexplore on (April 2, 2014, 15:30 GMT)

Darren Sammy and the WI batsmen will most certainly be worried about Rangara Herath, even though he says off-spinners pose more problems. Herath was simply astonishing against NZ. For SL to win they must keep taking wickets and try to kerb the free-flowing instincts of Gayle, Samuels and Sammy with clever bowling changes. Easier said than done. SL have their own free-hitters in Kusal, Thissara and Kulasekara, but one or two of the senior batsmen must take control at high strike-rates if they are to beat this good WI team.

Posted by Damian123 on (April 2, 2014, 15:20 GMT)

Sammy talks about not only the Finals of 2012 but the warm up game in 2014. How about the Super 10 Group match on 29/09/2012? SL won against WI by 9 wickets with 28 balls to spare! Have you forgotten that Mr. Sammy?

Against India in 2014, Jadeja & Mishra must be off-spinners! So as Herath & Prasanna in 2014 warm of match.
